Strategic Goal 1

Increase the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on cultural content.

Mary Susan McIntosh - British sociologist, feminist, political activist and campaigner for lesbian and gay rights in the UK.

Strategic Goal 2

Support the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing the understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level.

Outcomes

• Met with Sheila MacNeill and Marion Kelt at Glasgow Caledonian University to discuss a Wikimedia residency there focused on delivering on GCU's mission of learning activities for the common good.
• Discussed with Lydia Pintscher, Head of Wikidata, about how best to go about providing best practice guidance for any Wikidata portion of a new Open Data policy.
• Wrote an article on Wikipedia in the Classroom for inclusion in the University of Edinburgh's Teaching matters blog. This will go live on Tuesday 13th June 2017 and covers the three Wikipedia in the Classroom assignments we have run this year.
• Recorded the keynote speech by Professor Antonella Sorace, Bilingualism Matters, for the Celtic Knot Conference.
• Underwent training to record all the Celtic Knot conference presentations using the Panopto Lecture recording setup.
• Attended a 'Minority Languages Policy after Brexit' panel at the School of Scottish Studies which has led to the European Language Equality Network proposing a presentation at the Celtic Knot Conference 2017.
• Finalised article, co-written with Richard Nevell (Wikimedia UK) for inclusion in the University of Edinburgh journal on the residency so far.
• Created a new page for working with Wikisource and a new booklet on how to work with Wikisource using information gleaned from the help pages. At eighty pages long it is too long so the next step is to turn it into something more easy digestible. The Wikisource text, Edinburgh (1914) by Robert Louis Stevenson, has now been completed and has been added as a link to the Wikipedia page for Edinburgh. It has now accrued 200+ views since it was added on 21 May 2017.
• Edited 27 videos from the WikiCite conference which have now been shared to the University of Edinburgh's Media Hopper channel; accruing 85 views over the last 30 days.

Strategic Goal 3

To support the use of the Wikimedia projects as important tools for education and learning in the UK.

Outcomes

• Attended two meetings to discuss improvements and scheduled workshops for Translation Studies MSc programme for Autumn 2017. The Translation Studies MSc workshops are now confirmed to be going ahead on an opt-out basis this time.
• Assignments in Reproductive Biology Hons. and World Christianity MSc are also now confirmed as going ahead once more.
• Met with Alberto, a student member of the Edinburgh University Translation Society, who has now completed a translation of the English Wikipedia article on Encyclopedism to Italian Wikipedia.
• Trained Elizabeth Dulemba, Edinburgh School of Art, on 7 June 2017. She attended our first Wiki Women in Red meetup on 9 June (creating a page on Ethel Froud) and, as a result, now wants to arrange a Women Illustrators editathon in the coming months ahead as she has identified a number of female illustrators who are without a Wikipedia page.
• Met with Karen Gregory, Digital Sociology, who is scheduling an introductory Wikipedia workshop to take place as part of the course in October 2017 with a view to doing further work in Spring 2018.
• Met with Dr. Michael Seery, Reader in Education at the School of Chemistry, who has agreed to help organise an Ada Lovelace Day event on 10 October 2017 focused on Women in Chemistry to be held at Kings Buildings and involving colleagues from the other sciences and School of Chemistry. He has also asked his postgraduate students to attend monthly Wiki Women in Red meetups at the School of Chemistry to work on articles ahead of the event in order to identify a bank of resources. He is also liaising with the Royal Society of Chemistry for a separate Wikipedia event to be held there.

Digitisation

Collections identified for potential future upload:

• Gavin Willshaw, Digital Curator, has uploaded a test case of Thomas Jehu's PhD thesis to Wikisource during the History of Medicine editathon on 23 & 24 February 2017 and is looking to upload another PhD thesis on 16th June 2017 as part of a short transcribe-a-thon.
• A WiR and Library proposal has been drafted and passed to colleagues at Library & University Collections.
  • Update 12/6: This is on hiatus. Kirsty Lingstadt (Head of Digital Library) is due to meet with Jason Evans, Wikimedian in Residence at the National Library of Wales, on Friday 7 July 2017 to learn more about his particular residency.
• Paul Barnaby was to liaise with Navino Evans to see if Histropedia can be employed with the Our History site along with a Visual Editor plugin.
  • Update 12/6: Time and resources are not currently available to proceed with this planned improvement to the Our History site.
• We have been given permission to upload images where WW1 nurse orderly Ethel Moir is the creator from the Capital Collections website.
  • Update: Have uploaded one image to Ethel Moir's Wikipedia page on 12 May 2017 as part of International Nurses Day and am looking to upload more at Wiki Women in Red meetups in coming months ahead.

Projects/events in development

• Arranged with Stephen Kaye on the Mastercard Scholarship Foundation to hold an African Alumni & Swahili editathon in December 2017 (to be followed up in September 2017).
• Ruth Burgon at the Fruitmarket Gallery has proposed an editathon themed on Scottish Contemporary Artists to be held in Friday 24th November 2017 with confirmed involvement from the School of Design Informatics and potential involvement from the History of Art course. Liaising with course leaders at Informatics to arrange the first planning meeting now this event is confirmed as going ahead.
• Continuing discussions with Pauline Ward and Navino Evans about a Wikidata Showcase event at Repository Fringe 2017 - a 90 minute workshop will show how to add referenced verifiable data to Wikidata and how to add data in bulk working with the Wikidata plugin in Google Spreadsheets. A further 45 minute workshop will demonstrate how to get data out of Wikidata; querying, analysing and visualising it as part of a practical workshop. We are looking at whether Léa Lacroix of Wikidata and Wikimedia Germany can join us in providing a SPARQL workshop in the morning too.
• Liaising with Ewan Klein and Lorna Campbell around writing a Wikidata element to any new Open Data Policy (focused on 'how').
• Discussions with Jake Broadhurst and Jamie Cross about a Wikimedia event for 60-70 undergraduate students attending the Future Societies, Global Citizens - Undergraduate Research Conference on 28 June 2017 were on hold but have been resumed as of today. Still to be determined as to what the residency's involvement in this event is to be however.
• Continued discussions with Lorna Campbell about the Celtic Knot: Wikipedia Language Conference on Thursday 6 July 2017. Programme is now decided upon and speakers all confirmed. Booking is now open.
• Continuing discussions with Felix Stein at Social Anthropology about a Wikipedia editing assignment.
• Arranged meeting between Stuart Lewis (Head of Digital at National Library of Scotland), Kirsty Lingstadt (Head of Digital Library at the University of Edinburgh), Gillian Daly (SLIC) and Jason Evans (Wikimedian in Residence at the National Library of Wales) on Friday 7 July 2017.
• Arranged with Karen Gregory for a Wikipedia workshop to take place in October 2017 on the Digital Sociology course with a view to further work in Spring 2018.
• Planning an Ada Lovelace Day event focused on Women in Chemistry and liaising with Michael Seery, Reader in Education at the School of Education, about supporting his postgraduate students to write articles on Women in Chemistry in the run up this event as well as another proposed event with the Royal Society of Chemistry. First planning meeting for Ada Lovelace Day 2017 to be held at Kings Buildings on Monday 3rd July.
• Continuing discussions about the use and implementation of Open Badges at the university. Meeting with Charlie Farley, Stuart Nicol and Jon Jack to discuss how they are currently being utilised at the university to see how a Wikimedia Open Badge could be incorporated.
• Discussing with Sophie Nicholls at Teeside University about doing an editathon and Train the Trainer events down there.
• Discussing with Maggie Carson, School of Nursing Studies at the University of Edinburgh, and Siobhan O'Connor (Nursing Informatics at Edinburgh Napier University) about a joint Nursing edit-a-thon involving the Royal College of Nursing too.
