Portrait of Gibson in Paris
Portrait of Gibson in Paris

Several works by the American-Canadian writer William Gibson garnered critical attention and popular acclaim, receiving Hugo and Nebula Award nominations in the categories of best short story and best novelette and being featured prominently in the annual Locus Awards reader's poll. The themes, settings and characters developed in these stories culminated in his first novel, Neuromancer (1984), which proved to be the author's breakout work, achieving critical and commercial success and virtually initiating the cyberpunk literary genre. It became the first novel to win the "triple crown" of science fiction awards – the Nebula and the Hugo Awards for best novel along with the Philip K. Dick Award for paperback original. Its sequels in the Sprawl trilogyCount Zero (1986) and Mona Lisa Overdrive (1988) – also attracted Hugo and Nebula nominations for best novel, though major award wins eluded the writer thereafter. The GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Video Game is an annual award that honors excellence in the depiction of LGBT characters and themes in video games. It is one of several categories of the annual GLAAD Media Awards, presented by GLAAD at ceremonies held in New York City and Los Angeles between March and May. The award was introduced at the 30th GLAAD Media Awards in 2019 and given to The Elder Scrolls Online: Summerset (developed by ZeniMax Online Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks). The 32nd ceremony in 2021 marks the only time a tie has occurred, with The Last of Us Part II (developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment) and Tell Me Why (developed by Dontnod Entertainment and published by Xbox Game Studios) both winning the award. The award has received some criticism for its emphasis on Triple-A video games, and that many of the games nominated contained minimal levels of LGBT-inclusive content and representation. Since its inception, the award has been given to six video games, most recently Apex Legends (developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts) at the 34th GLAAD Media Awards in 2023. Wood stork
Wood stork

There are twenty extant species of storks, members of the family Ciconiidae, consisting of heavy-bodied, large-billed wading birds in the monotypic order Ciconiiformes. Some species have different common names: two species in the genus Anastomus are known as openbills, two from the genus Leptoptilos are called adjutants, and three species are known as jabirus. Storks are found in tropical and subtropical habitats around the world, mostly inhabiting wetlands and marshes, although some also inhabit forests and savannahs. They are large birds with long legs, stout bills, and variable featherless patches on the head. The twenty extant stork species recognised by the International Ornithologists' Union are distributed among six genera, one of which is monotypic. Storks are most diverse in Afro-Eurasia, especially in Africa and Asia, and only one species, the wood stork (example pictured), is known from the Americas. (Full list...)

Yemen has five sites on the list of World Heritage Sites. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designates World Heritage Sites of outstanding universal value to cultural or natural heritage which have been nominated by countries which are signatories to the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, established in 1972. Yemen ratified the convention on 7 October 1980. The first site from Yemen on the list, the Old Walled City of Shibam (pictured), was designated in 1982. The most recent site listed was the Landmarks of the Ancient Kingdom of Saba in Marib in 2023. The Socotra Archipelago was listed in 2008, and is the only natural site in Yemen; the other four are cultural sites. Barry Bonds
Barry Bonds

The Silver Slugger Award has been awarded annually since 1980 to the best offensive player at each position in both the American League and the National League, as determined by the coaches and managers of Major League Baseball. These voters consider several offensive statistics, including batting average, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage, as well as their "general impressions of a player's overall offensive value". The award is a bat-shaped trophy, three feet (91 cm) tall, engraved with the names of each of the winners from the league and plated with sterling silver. Ten Silver Slugger Awards are given each year per league. One each goes to a catcher, first baseman, second baseman, third baseman, and shortstop. Three outfielders receive the award, irrespective of their specific position. Home run record-holder Barry Bonds (pictured) won twelve Silver Slugger Awards, the most of any player. Mike Piazza and Alex Rodriguez are tied for second, with ten wins each. (This list is part of a featured topic: Silver Slugger Award.)

Dayanışma by Zühtü Müridoğlu
Dayanışma by Zühtü Müridoğlu

Twenty sculptures were erected in Istanbul in 1973 and 1974 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of Republic of Turkey on 29 October 1973. The theme of the sculptures was open; the sculptors were not only allowed but encouraged to freely express their own characteristic styles. This was a unique event in the history of modern Turkish sculpture, which had until then mostly only seen commissions for monuments. The Istanbul Municipality intended to erect fifty sculptures, but a lack of funds necessitated that the number of sculptures be reduced to twenty. Only six of the sculptures remain, four of which remain in their original location. (Full list...)
