Nihonjoe (talk · contribs) – I've been around for a good long while now, so I've gotten down the routine of how things generally work on Wikipedia. I've got a handle on dealing with disputes with other editors, I believe, and I want to be able to do more to help out my fellow editors.     Quid pro quo for unrelated things is not compromise. Once an adminstrator does that in any case, their further decisions may be suspect. It was irresponsible for him to say he would look at it.     That's really unfortunate. Ted, I know you have already stated this is your final comment on the matter. At the same time, without trying to pester you, I do want to point out that Nihonjoe categorically states below that his consideration of looking at the case is NOT to try to get me to vote for him, and with the long list of votes above, he doesn't even need it. In other words, he's not being a "politician" as you stated earlier. He was considering trying to help. One can easily tell from his comments below that he was annoyed at me, and he did originally refuse to even consider looking. According to your vote, this WP Admin candidate's "greatest sin" is offering to consider helping someone with a vandal, which in my mind is sort of what the job is, in part, about.   2. 'Likely temporary oppose. I don't know how many different scripts the average user has installed, but I know I have a fairly large number of scripts installed - yet half of his new signature (the first half) comes up as boxes for me. That's a problem for an admin, I think, and a borderline violation of WP:SIG.     Fang Aili uses characters that usually come with your basic operating system. Some of Nihonjoe's signature is fine, but apparently he is also using characters that are not commonly available.     Huh? you hath confuseth me. IMHO it's some encoding crap that really should never have been invented. I think it's still possible for Nihonjoe to change his signature so that it looks the same for people who see it fine but fixes everyone else.     Maybe it is not illegal, but it is quite close to it. I hope you reconsider this. You should vote according to your views of what he has done and what you expect him to do, not upon condition of doing something.     I did not say I would vote for him if he votes for me. I said I'd change my vote if he considers reviewing the case. After all, he stated above that he wants to be able to do more to help out his fellow editors. I am in need of help, and I've requested assistance to no avail, off and on for several months. You say I should vote based on what I expect him to do, and one of the things I expect from Admins is to occasionally take a look at potential cases of vandalism, sockpuppetry, copyvio, etc, and fix the problem, if it truly exists.     I'm aware of that. I did not claim any admin was obligated to block any user or act on anything. Yet since they are the only ones who can do so, it's up to them if they want to prevent serious problems. Additionally, I haven't really had any experience with this kind of thing, so I'm not sure I'd be the best person to look into it.     It is a bit odd. I'm tired of having my pages vandalized, tired of having to deal with this vandal, and want it to stop. I've gone thru what I considered the proper channels (admin noticeboard, vandalism in progress, and suspected sockpuppet board), and it got me nowhere. I tried vandal warnings, sockpuppet warnings, etc. I had originally assumed good faith. No change; I still get legal threats, blankings, etc. I'm going to extreme measures to try to end this problem.
    I didn't ask you to "buy" my vote, I asked you to look into the problem, something I'd ask of any good admin. I didn't ask for any guarantee, I asked for a look. If you can't or don't want to look, I have to question if IMO you'd honestly make a good admin. Were I an admin or even potential admin, and someone asked me to just look at a situation that only an admin could fix, I'd look. That's just me *shrug*.     Well, that's the way it appears. You've said that you'd vote "Support" if I said I'd consider looking into this issue upon promotion to adminitrator. That sounds like the only way I could possibly get your vote is by promising you that I'll do something in the future, rather than you basing your vote on what I've done so far. So, yes, I'll consider looking at that issue, but I'm not doing it in order to get you to change your vote.   • Reply to Cuivienen and Ardenn: Those first three characters are from the Insert box found on every edit page on English Wikipedia. They are basic unicode characters. Why else would they include them in that box? However, since you two seem to be having so much trouble with them, I've changed them to the "middot" character. Are you able to view them now? The second three characters are unicode Japanese kanji, so if you are having problems viewing them, it's likely you don't have a Japanese unicode font installed. I access this site from both a Windows XP machine and a Mac OS X machine, and I don't have problems viewing my sig on either one. I've also added a question mark for people to click which takes them to the Help:Japanese page. Questions for the candidate
Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia in this capacity. Please take the time to answer a few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:

1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? Please check out Category:Wikipedia backlog, and read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.

Φ Adding a few items that do require sysop tools in order to address the point brought up by Kimchi, above: I would assist with settling NPOV disputes, assist with WP:AIV, assist with deletions as I learned the ropes (can't really learn how it all truly works until one becomes an admin), as well as with anything else on the backlog list that needs attention. 2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
A: I think WikiProject Japan is one of the best as far as working to help organize similarly-minded editors. There are around 20 participants now, and the project is only a little over a month old now. Related to that, I spun-off Wikipedia:Requested articles/Japan in order to make it easier for project members and other editors to find Japan-related article requests. I've spent a lot of time populating this page (and it's three sub-pages).
ΦI think I created a good article with Shōnen (disambiguation), which has a lot of good information despite it being a disambuiguation page. I learned quite a bit while translating that one from the Japanese Wikipedia page.
ΦWilliam Bliss Baker is small, but contains absolutely all the information I could find about him online. I'm trying to find time to visit a library in order to expand the article further.
ΦHighschool! Kimen-gumi has taken (and is still taking) a lot of time as there is very little English-language information about the show. Therefore, almost everything in the article is translated from Japanese sources (at this point, mostly the equivalent JA-WP article).
ΦTokumei Kakarichō Tadano Hitoshi is another short, but sweet, article. The article isn't terribly large, but it contains a lot of good information. I know a lot of these articles contain large lists of information or timelines, but that's the easiest and quickest way of presenting the information (especially when a lot of what I do is lists of shows someone has worked on, list of casts and staff for a show, and similar things). I think it's more important to have a lot of good solid information there for people than to have nothing at all (which is what was there for all of these before I wrote those articles).
ΦFinally, I think one of the best articles I've written (at least most of it) is MyFamily.com, Inc. (written because I have an interest in genealogy, and I use their services). 3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A: Probably the biggest one was the Use of macrons in titles of Japan-related articles discussion and mediation. I think I did a good job of genuinely trying to work things out with the editors who disagreed with my stance on the subject. I've also tried to go out of my way to compliment thm and encourage them in order to show there are no hard feelings despite the heated discussion that sometimes took place. There have been a few other minor disagreements, but this was definitely the biggest disagreement/conflict in which I have participated. I think it was resolved amicably, and I still work with most (if not all) of the editors involved to continue improving coverage of Japan-related topics on WP. --日本穣 Nihonjoe 23:51, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
