UK phone area[edit]

I am in the UK (with BT). I can dial 1471 to get the number of the previous incoming call. A recent call reported phone number 02704 xxx xxx. However http://www.area-codes.org.uk does not list any areas starting 027. Can anyone explain this? -- SGBailey (talk) 09:38, 25 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mescaline...? ;) No, sorry SGBailey, just kidding. Well our article suggests there is an area code 0270 (in that it states, under 01936 that it was "unused0936 was Weaver (WE6) – numbers were transferred to 0270." If that makes any sense! But to be honest, that's still no real use to you at all I'm afraid, because no-one sends to know where WE6 is. There seems no sech place as Weaver, except the river... — fortunavelut lunaRarely receiving (many) pings. Bizarre. 10:15, 25 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That means that there was an 0270 code before PhONEday in 1995, when they added the extra "1" to most of the codes, and it became 01270, the current code for Crewe. Weaver was the name of an exchange covering the rural area in the valley of the River Weaver, which was then combined with the Crewe exchange. Wymspen (talk) 12:39, 25 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can tell this code is still unallocated. 020(7) is a London code, so I would intially suggest Caller ID spoofing. -- zzuuzz (talk) 11:01, 25 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So when Subscriber Trunk Dialling came in, the code for this Weaver exchange was 0WE6. When this was converted to all - figure dialling it became 0936. The code for Crewe was 0CR0, which became 0270. The next step was the addition of a "1" as the second digit, so Weaver would have become 01936, but it was amalgamated with Crewe, which became 01270. 92.27.49.50 (talk) 14:37, 25 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I very occasionally get calls from such fictitious numbers. They are always scam calls, and I assume the the caller, somewhere abroad, just spoofs a number that will get past all filters and looks like a genuine national call. I just block the number. Dbfirs 16:45, 25 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
