JRR Tolkien/Sindarin[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was keep primarily because of WP:R#K4. (Note that this has not always been a redirect, it appears to have existed as an article from April 2001 to February 2002.) Legoktm (talk) 01:06, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yesterday, I nominated a redirect with similar formatting (The Silmarillion/Sindarin). I believe it falls into the same category: improbable search term, no meaningful page history, etc. Delete per same reasoning as my other nomination. TNstingray (talk) 16:26, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete - appears to be the remnant of a long-outdated convention. No longer serves any purpose. Change to keep per Tamzin. Was not aware of the K4 rationale but this surely seems to apply. I guess they created that guideline for a reason so I will follow it. ‡ El cid, el campeador talk 16:33, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete outdated formatting. Horse Eye's Back (talk) 16:36, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Update: still support deletion, I searched rather exhaustively for existing links on external pages and I don't think there are any. Horse Eye's Back (talk) 16:57, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per WP:R#K4: Links that have existed for a significant length of time, including ... old subpage links, should be left alone in case there are any existing links on external pages pointing to them. If we're going to start deleting this kind of redirect, it should probably be an RfC. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 16:39, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Tamzin: that'd be a splendid reason, but there actually aren't any: no Wikipedia articles at all. There are just deletion discussion pages and a couple of user pages. There is also no history to speak of, it's always been a redirect. Chiswick Chap (talk) 17:36, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    Agreed. TNstingray (talk) 13:31, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    external links, in RfD discourse, = links from outside en.wp. J947edits 00:36, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - page is not needed, is not linked, and is not a plausible search target. Chiswick Chap (talk) 17:36, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Tamzin. No real reason for deletion has been advanced, and a reason to keep applies. Also note that the talkpage notifications to User:0 were futile as that is not any actual user's name which is peculiar (see the userpage). A7V2 (talk) 07:34, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    • I use Twinkle and have not had previous issues with this. Not sure why that happened. TNstingray (talk) 13:09, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
      • Twinkle is correctly following the metadata it gets from MediaWiki. That metadata just happens to be wrong in this case. Probably no point in building in a special case for it though. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 17:57, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
      • Sorry I worded it a bit strangely, it wasn't in any way intended as criticism. Even though they aren't quite a user, they are listed as the creator of this so it makes sense for Twinkle to do that as it would normally be expected to post on the creator's talkpage when listing a redirect here. A7V2 (talk) 06:00, 28 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per WP:XY. Guess I'm going to break the grain or WP:IAR or whatever, but I've never agreed with that wording excerpt from WP:R#K4, and probably never will. Titles in redirects and Wikipedia serve Wikipedia, not external web sites. If it's misleading in Wikipedia, it's misleading outside Wikipedia. When we'll delete titles in most other cases no matter how old they are (with consensus or WP:CSD, of course), the fact that these subpage-style redirects have to be an exception has never made sense to me. Aqd'[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. Legoktm (talk) 00:21, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A misspelling of 'aqd, in turn an ASCII-only transliteration of عقود (ʿaqd). Neither 'aqd nor ʿaqd exists, and none of these three spellings can be found at the current target. Those terms should probably stay red under WP:REDYES, as contracts under Islamic law are a notable topic that currently do not get focused coverage in any article or section I see. However, even with ʿaqd blue, I think this would be an implausible misspelling, so delete for any combination of unmentioned, REDYES, and implausible. N.B.: This was an article for less than 5 hours in 2009; it would stand a snowball's chance in Hell of surviving AfD, so I think restoring would be needlessly bureaucratic. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 08:46, 24 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was keep. Legoktm (talk) 00:34, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

These redirects are almost all created at a time when mainspace subpages were more common. Delete due to them being unconvensional search formats. Readers can go to List of fallacies to see even more fallacies. See also Wikipedia:Article_titles#Do not create subsidiary articles, though that only applies to articles, not redirects. ~~ lol1VNIO (I made a mistake? talk to me) 21:33, 3 October 2022 (UTC); edited 21:38, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep per {{R from subpage}} these are very old (over 20 years in some cases) and deletion will offer no benefits. Thryduulf (talk) 21:55, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nom since I'm not a proponent of WP:RFD#K4 at all and do not believe their existences are useful enough to warrant erroneously-titled redirects (since redirects are meant to be search terms for Wikipedia) ... but alas, I already predict this is going to close as "keep" especially since so many redirects were nominated. Steel1943 (talk) 22:24, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Being search terms is only one function of redirects, and maintaining links from external sites is an equally important (if not arguably more important) reason for redirects to exist. Thryduulf (talk) 23:14, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
We're going to have to agree to disagree here (like usual on this subject matter) since I do not believe that Wikipedia should cater to third-party web sites at the expense of having oddly-titled redirects that are unhelpful as search terms (especially considering the WP:XY issues with these redirects) ... so I'd rather just state the obvious, frequent result unless WP:RFD#K4 gets revoked somehow (which I would like, but it is what it is). Steel1943 (talk) 02:06, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Thryduulf. And old revisions of article like Special:Permalink/14254 has incoming links to above redirects (even within the prose), and that is within Wikipedia itself. There would be hundreds of thousands of such old revisions across the many Wikipedia. We should preserve redirects, avoid redlinks internally and externally as far as possible, unless the said redirects are in conflict with multiple targets or are absolutely detrimental to the experience of the Wikipedia reader. I would like the redirects for The Kidnapping of Edgardo (film) and Draft:Untitled animated Spice Girls film retargeted for the following reasons. First, The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara was announced to be moving forward without Steven Spielberg.[1] Second, the target article for the draft about the upcoming animated film about the Spice Girls is wrong. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.209.40.250 (talk) 18:37, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was keep. As noted, the term is now included in the article. This also means the "very obscure synonym" criteria for deletion no longer applies, because it specifies "...that is not mentioned in the target". Legoktm (talk) 00:31, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not mentioned in target Pizzaplayer219TalkContribs 14:02, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have added a mention. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 14:12, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment my first thought was that this referred to 19 January 1984 in US date format, but there is no mention of 19 January in the 1984 article and while 1984 does occur in the 19 January article, it is only in reference to the birth of four sports people (football, ice hockey, motor racing) and the death of a fifth (ice hockey), none of which would make a suitable target. Thryduulf (talk) 15:24, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. Not every term has to be included in the article, but those who have heard of the term or are familiar with the term; see movie quotes as an example. The VICE source cited in the article uses the term (link to such source is here), and multiple other RS's which aren't directly included in the article mention the term (see ArsTechnica (not to be confused with another ArsTechnica article currently cited in the target section), GamesHub, and GameRant). This should be sufficient proof to keep a redirect. InvadingInvader (talk) 17:59, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I will emphasize, since the last two comments seem to imply there is currently no mention, that I have reädded a mention, sourced to Vice. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 18:40, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest that a "Redirect rationale" template be created and added below RCATs to the various redirects, with reference, if appropriate, so that the redirect creator has some say even if they long left the encyclopedia at the time of RfD, and we have to brainstorm(not the word I was looking for, but whatever) a bit less. Helps when there is no mention at the target article. There are maybe 10-15 RfD regulars, and we don't have subject knowledge of everything in existence, so the result we end up with might not always be the ideal one. I, for example, have zero knowledge about Minecraft, Mario, etc. Glad that some of you do. CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {CX}) 12:50, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies for not clarifying this earlier, though I was the one who originally worked on this redirect. It was primarily in response to the ongoing comparisons at the time surrounding the Save Minecraft movement. InvadingInvader (talk) 05:32, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete I don't think the term is actually due for inclusion in the main article, as a relatively short-lived fad. I won't remove it for now, though. Regardless, I think the name meets the "very obscure synonym" requirement for deletion, as it's just a series of numbers that could mean almost anything. January 19, 1984? I couldn't make up my mind where to target this redirect, so I created it just to bring it here (arbitrarily picking one of the two options for now). Either this should point to Glaucoma § Signs and symptoms as an {{avoided double redirect|Glaukomflecken}} + {{r from misspelling}}, or it should point to Dr. Glaucomflecken as an {{r from short name}}. On the one hand, WP:SMALLDETAILS would tend toward the latter, since the former is always(?) spelled with a k. On the other hand, Dr. Glaucomflecken's name is not generally abbreviated to just his fictional surname, so one could argue that someone searching just this word is more likely misspelling the glaucoma symptom. Thoughts? Again, the current target was an arbitrary choice, and for now I am undecided. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 13:16, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete - trivial part of the redirect subject, unlikely search term. Sergecross73 msg me 14:47, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No longer mentioned in article and has no reliable sources to warrant a mention. Probably WP:GAMECRUFT to include a mention anyways. Pizzaplayer219TalkContribs 14:33, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

IPad Air 1[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was retarget to IPad Air (1st generation) per WP:JUSTDOIT. Also, Bassie f, please read the instructions for RFD as this is not the first time you have made a nomination without stating why you believe a redirect should be retargeted, but instead you incorrectly demand someone else retarget a redirect after a specific period of time (which is not how RFD ... or really Wikipedia, for that matter ... works. If you see an issue that can be fixed and isn't controversial ... WP:JUSTDOIT.) Feel free to contact me with questions or concerns. iPad Air 1 refers to iPad Air (1st generation) so can someone please retarget the redirect iPad Air 1 to iPad Air (1st generation) as well as iPad Air (2013) in a day Bassie f (talk) 08:38, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This will not happen in a day, RfDs generally run for a week and there is no reason why this would be any different. Thryduulf (talk) 11:00, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Channel Three[edit]

The result of the discussion was retarget to Channel 3. Please see WP:JUSTDOIT (non-admin closure) Pizzaplayer219TalkContribs 17:52, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This redirect page should redirect to Channel 3 because Channel Three is the word form for Channel 3. Bassie f (talk) 01:40, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Retarget per RfD. I don't think this needed to be an RfD at all, it's pretty clearly just a mistake. WPscatter t/c 02:14, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think the creator made a mistake as well, I will edit the mentioned redirect page soon. Bassie f (talk) 02:18, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Will you please edit Channel Three in a few hours and mark this discussion as completed, WPScatter. Bassie f (talk) 02:27, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not mentioned in target. Searching doesn't find an RS relating this to Shamanism, but more recently it's from Man and His Symbols MB 00:52, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete since it's not mentioned at the target and isn't a synonym. Hut 8.5 07:56, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete. I do not think a quote from a book about Labrador Naskapi Indians will be sufficient for a target. However, if there was a section on the beliefs of the Naskapi Indians which had a mention of Mistapeo, it would have been an apt target. Jay 💬 11:24, 9 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
