Wikipedia:MS[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was keep. (non-admin closure) CycloneYoris talk! 01:17, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This page should be dabified, since there are also a few other pages fitting this abbreviation: WP:Music Samples and WP:Manual of Style. Granted, the latter was more often known as MoS, please bear in mind that “of” is often ignored in forming abbreviations. Precedent can be found at my previous RfD for WP:UC. NotReallySoroka (talk) 22:13, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep. If you disambiguate a shortcut, it can no longer be used in that fashion so I think the bar to disambiguate is a lot higher than most other cases. I'm just not seeing it here. Like you said, the Manual of Style is MoS, not MS. I also don't think it likely for someone to type MS looking for samples. On the other hand, MS is the two-digit code for Mississippi and would be plausible for someone looking for a Mississippi topic. -- Tavix (talk) 23:19, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disambiguate In addition to Mississippi, there's Montserrat (country code MS) WP:WikiProject Caribbean/Montserrat work group, and Microsoft WP:WikiProject Microsoft, and the Malay language (language code "ms") WP:WikiProject Malaysia ; and there's WP:WikiProject Motorsport (which uses {{WPMS}}) ; This unduly focuses on the US topic of Mississippi, which if most state projects are of any indication, is low activity, this project having only a handful of messages over half a decade. -- 65.92.246.142 (talk) 04:18, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. Except for a short period in 2009-10 the shortcut has pointed to the Mississippi project since 2008 and there are a large number of links that would be unnecessarily broken by a change - all of those I spot checked were pointing to where they were intended. Ambiguous shortcuts are normal and not a problem in and of themselves, and given the potential for significant confusion when shortcut targets are changed (old links will remain pointing at the old target, new links will be for a mixture of old and new) we should always be very conservative when changing them. Disambiguating shortcuts is rarely a good solution as it negates the benefit of having the shortcut in the first place. Thryduulf (talk) 10:40, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per User:Thryduulf. WikiProject shortcuts can be arbitrary and do not need to follow WP:PRIMARYTOPIC or other article naming policies. We may as well keep it pointing to the same target it has had for many years. —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 22:09, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Memorial book[edit]

The result of the discussion was retarget to Book of remembrance. (non-admin closure) CycloneYoris talk! 01:15, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

"Memorial book" is not mentioned at the target, and appears to be a term of art not necessarily associated with Yizkor books and the Holocaust. Notably, when searching GScholar, among the top results were examples of the term's use for Jewish historical texts unrelated to the Holocaust ([1]), but also several that have nothing to do with Judaism ([2], [3], [4]). This appears to be an independently notable genre, off which Yizkor books are a subset, and deletion to encourage article creation seems appropriate. signed, Rosguill talk 19:20, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was delete. And salt until there is an announcement. Jay (talk) 17:59, 20 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This redirect was deleted at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2021 November 1#IPhone 14 so it is eligible for G4. I tagged it and it was subsequently deleted by Liz. However, it was recreated again and immediately nominated at AFD. Of course, that's the wrong forum but since a discussion is desired for this redirect I'll give one here. There is nothing that has changed since the last time this redirect was deleted. There's still no announcement, no release date, everything is still just rumors. I guess now that's its 2022 and Hajoon0102's crystal ball says it will release this year, that makes a difference, but I disagree. This should be deleted and salted until there is enough non-rumor sourcing for an article. -- Tavix (talk) 17:04, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A couple of crumbs related to Sting Me. The first is a disambiguation error, and the second has an undefined "INT". -- Tavix (talk) 16:35, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete both per nom. Sing Me INT is a {{R from move}} (the corresponding page history of that now resides at Sing Me (song) after a round robin page swap), but it was only there for a few hours right after creation in 2006, but nothing in any of the page histories or the history of File:The Black Crowes - Sting Me INT.jpg (deleted as an unused non-free image in 2015) explain the "INT". My guess is that it refers to an "international" version, but nothing on Wikipedia allows me to confirm or deny that (and I've not bothered looking elsewhere). Bb bullets & Bb pellets[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was retarget to BB gun. (non-admin closure) CycloneYoris talk! 01:16, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Between these redirects' current article target, BB gun and Pellet (air gun), I'm not sure the best target for these redirects; the current target is probably not the preferred target since the other two more precise articles exist, but the subjects of these redirects are each "Pellet (air gun)"s, but they are both exclusive to BB guns. Steel1943 (talk) 22:02, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, plicit 12:56, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Retarget to BB gun which has a hatnote and whose intro section explains the confusion with general airsoft guns and others; and also distinguishes BB size pellets for shotguns -- 65.92.246.142 (talk) 04:26, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment I have added BB pellet to the discussion, since it should probably be targeted to same place as Bb pellets. Related redirecs that refer to the type of projectile, including Bb's, BB shot, BBs, and BB (ammunition) all target BB gun, so retargeting there seems consistent with these. I wonder if Shot (pellet) would make for a better target (especially for BB pellet(s)), but perhaps that's better for another discussion. Mdewman6 (talk) 02:02, 16 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Tertiaries (disambiguation)[edit]

The result of the discussion was retarget to Tertiary (disambiguation). plicit 14:37, 20 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think "Tertiaries" is ambiguous is it? I doubt if this is helpful to anyone: Tertiaries redirects to Tertiary and there is a hatnote there to Tertiary (disambiguation). Even if "Tertiaries" is ambiguous, a reader using this redirect (and hardly anyone ever does) is probably looking for the disambiguation page. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 10:20, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Retarget to Tertiary (disambiguation). I see several meanings at the dab page that are countable nouns and can be abbreviated to just tertiary. I'd suggest retargeting Tertiaries as well, since the gological period is not one of those. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 11:21, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to the dab per LaundryPizza and tag as {{R to disambiguation page}}. Thryduulf (talk) 17:00, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to the dab. A quick Google search shows that the term is used in geology only in very old writings, but is used i modern writings in astrometry and also refers to certain kinds of members of religious orders. --Kent G. Budge (talk) 19:32, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Tagan, Kyrgyzstan[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. plicit 14:34, 20 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This is apparently the result of a move with edit summary "move to nearby village", but there is no mention of Tagan in the article, or at the wider Leylek District. Redirects without mention lead to confusion: is Tagan another name for Kayragach, a subordijnate settlement, or an error: I don't know. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:48, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Delete: I moved it to Kayragach in 2017 because that fitted the coordinates best. I don't think there's a place named "Tagan" or anything similar near there, so indeed the redirect is not helpful. Markussep Talk 10:15, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per both above. Google Maps does take you to Kayragach when searching for "Tagan, Kyrgyzstan" but as the information brought up about the settlement is the Wikipedia article I suspect that is the result of the redirect. OpenStreetMap doesn't find anything for "Tagan, Kyrgyzstan", it knows of multiple places called "Tagan" but all are in Russia, Turkmenistan or Mali. As none of those countries border Kyrgyzstan none of them are plausible errors for this place and while Kayragach is only about 5km from the border, that border is with Tajikistan. There is a place in Tajikistan called Tangan, but that is 175km from Kayragach as the crow flies and firmly within its country (it's about 25km east of the capital, Dushanbe). I'm also not seeing any other results for "Tagan, Kyrgyzstan" that are not almost certainly derived from Wikipedia directly or indirectly. Thryduulf (talk) 17:15, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what to do with this one. A former article that was redirected in 2019. Currently mentioned in Chevrolet#Marketing in a list of marketing slogans (the only other bluelink is See the USA in Your Chevrolet, an article). I think although a strange way to word it, it would be better to retarget to American Revolution (disambiguation) though I'm not sure (a link to Chevrolet could be added to that page). It's unclear why this redirect was created. I certainly can't find any evidence of this being a nickname for Louis Chevrolet. Though he was a racing driver himself, this seems an extremely unlikely search term, and is no more likely looking for him than for any of the various Chevrolet racing cars. Delete. A7V2 (talk) 00:35, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep to help the reader who doesn't know the car company founder's full name but knows he was a racer. Helps to avoid going through the Chevrolet article. Havradim leaf a message 15:46, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's extremely unlikely someone would search in this way. Searching the term online it is used exclusively to refer to cars. It could also cause confusion with Chevrolet Racing (a new organisation which may or may not become notable). A7V2 (talk) 08:24, 4 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If a person were to be interested in Chevrolet racing, or a thing called a Chevrolet racer, then that is exactly what they would search for. Racer Chevrolet, with the qualifying term coming first, has an entirely different connotation. Havradim leaf a message 06:42, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete or redirect to Chevrolet (disambiguation). which lists auto racers Arthur Chevrolet and Gaston Chevrolet as well as Louis. "Racer" is certainly in the dictionary as "one who races", but the Arthur, Gaston, and Louis articles' ledes use the more common hyponym "racecar driver". Having "Racer Chevrolet" as a redirect invites the false inference that this is a recognized nickname for Louis, as opposed to a hypothetical search query. Users generally expect a search query to give a list of possible articles rather than redirect to a single one. If you can't remember "the car company founder's full name", it's near the beginning of the Chevrolet article and I think that's where most people would start. jnestorius(talk) 22:31, 7 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nominating for deletion. The term seems to be an uncommon neologism and in any case is not mentioned at the target (pedophilia), nor is it accurately represented by it. Pedophilia is a paraphilia and a psychiatric disorder, which can lead to criminal behavior, but is considered distinct from it in the psychiatric and legal literature. Comment: The redirects "Tvärsnitt", ..., "Inconsistenza temporale" discussed below, and much more, were all created by Ciphers (talk · contribs) on 29 Sep 2009 (cf. [5]), who is meanwhile blocked. There was a discussion about that with Arthur Rubin at Ciphers' talk page (cf. [6]). It seems that meanwhile many of the original redirects have been overriden by disambiguation articles. I suggest to check all redirect creations and to delete those that violate WP:RLOTE. - Jochen Burghardt (talk) 12:09, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: I have just checked the most recent redirects in the time range [10:46 ... 10:40] (in my time zone CET), that is, from "Vidrio" to "Tacos arabes". The following pages are still redirects without any comment (such as {{R to XXX}}), and haven't been touched by any other editor than Ciphers:
Estribillo, Ouvertures, Antifona, Pasacalles, Leit-motiv, Struktur (except for the discussion tag), Sozialstruktur (discussion), Kurde (except for RussBot), Samusa, Kipe (bots), Helwa, Antarados, Coelesyria, Syria Coele, Nabatäer, Accords d'armistice israélo-arabes de 1949, Al-Hurriyya (bots), Liederzyklus, Ballada, Planto, Barkarola (bots), Dainas, Ária, Hymnus, Kunstlied, Kinderlieder, Skillingtryck (bot), Villancicos, Recitativ, Recitativi, Rezitativ, Balletti, Ballett, Balletto, Ballerine.
I vote to delete all of them. Maybe some other editors could check the remaining time range. - Jochen Burghardt (talk) 12:35, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose deletion in this discussion. They all need tagging, and I would suggest a separate discussion and doing a little bit of looking first, e.g. Al-Hurriyya and Antifona need checking to see if they are alternative English romanisations of the target. Villancicos looks like a standard {{R from plural}}. Thryduulf (talk) 17:41, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Jochen Burghardt I am very much aware of the other redirects created by the user; if we could please discuss them one after another, that would be great. ~~~~

  • Delete Tvärsnitt per nom. Thryduulf (talk) 17:51, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Tvärsnitt per above. Oppose deletion of all the others, in this discussion. I recognise several as being potentially the original-language titles of musical works, and they would need individual searching and assessment. For example, Hymnus is a composition by Julius Klengel, mentioned in that article. Narky Blert (alt) (talk) 07:08, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: As the discussion at the talk page shows, Ciphers used a script to systematically add foreign-language redirects to all articles applied to. Therefore, I still think deleting all these redirects (per WP:RLOTE) is the easiest way to cope with the situation. If some of them happened to be useful, it is easier to create them again, on demand. In the above example, Hymnus just redirects to Hymn, not to Julius Klengel. - Jochen Burghardt (talk) 09:29, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Two wrongs do not make a right. We lose nothing by spending a little bit of time to separate the good and the bad redirects, but by deleting them all we are guaranteed to lose the good ones until someone expends more effort recreating them - with no guarantee that they will as the deletion has made it harder to identify them. Even with Neelix, who made an order of magnitude more redirects, we didn't just delete them en mass. Thryduulf (talk) 10:47, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete. According to Google Translate, this is Dutch for Greatest Common Divisor. I see no reason why a Dutch phrase should redirect to an English article.—Anita5192 (talk) 02:53, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
