Kiwi (slur)[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. Wug·a·po·des 20:36, 23 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Delete. "Kiwi" isn't a slur. From the article: "its usage is not considered offensive". Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 18:12, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Can this be kept as {{R from non-neutral name}}? What is the chance of readers mistakenly considering "kiwi" comparable to other demographic labels? feminist (talk) 02:09, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. It implies that "Kiwi" is a slur, which is false, as far as I know. Nurg (talk) 11:02, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, either with feminist's suggested tag and/or {{R from incorrect name}}. There are plenty of national nicknames that aren't inherently slurs but could still be used as such depending on context, such as Yank. This is a plausible error for readers not especially familiar with New Zealand, and the target article will quickly correct them. --BDD (talk) 17:33, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete per nom. Not considered offensive as stated at target article, therefore not a slur. CycloneYoris talk! 22:22, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per BDD as a reasonable misconception. Note that the correct template would be {{R from incorrect disambiguation}} as the error is in the parenthesised portion of the title. 59.149.124.29 (talk) 02:31, 14 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. It isn't considered offensive as noted, so not a slur. Nothing currently links to Kiwi (slur), so there is no value in retaining it as a redirect (from an incorrect disambiguation). If someone erroneously believed Kiwi to be an offensive term for the people, they would easily find Kiwi (people). If we kept every incorrect disambiguation that somebody had created, then we could easily end up with an unnecessary proliferation of these, which would serve no useful purpose. Paora (talk) 10:23, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. 'Kiwi' isn't a slur.Chjoaygame (talk) 09:00, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - BDD's logic is sound, but this redirect had only 1 hit in the 90 days preceding the nomination; it's evidently not useful. Whether or not it is a slur is entirely irrelevant. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 17:25, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Kiwi isn't a slur, our own government websites (100% Pure and NZ Story) used the term to advertise or inform foreigners about the term and why we call ourselves "Kiwis" NZFC(talk)(cont) 10:51, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I assume this is heading for a delete. I won't raise a fuss but want to leave a final appeal: it may be very well known, even universally so, in New Zealand that "kiwi" is not a slur. But we're a global encyclopedia, and redirects are cheap, allowing us to be very helpful even when readers don't know what might seem obvious to someone else. Prime Minister of the United States is my go-to example of this. See also WP:POPE. --BDD (talk) 15:24, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Statements at WP:POPE (i.e "The Pope is Catholic", "Paris is in France") are true, so no problem there. The implication that the United States has a Prime Minister is false, but there is no implicit value judgement. Kiwi (slur) hints, if not implies, that "Kiwi" is a slur, which is arguably a kind of value judgement, in addition to being false. It would be like having President of the United States (criminal) as a redirect to President of the United States. We don't have "Yank (slur)" as a redirect, even though you earlier said that it could be used as a slur, whereas "Kiwi" could never be a slur (in my humble opinion) and we shouldn't cast such aspersions. Nurg (talk) 10:24, 23 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Not mentioned in article. I suggest soft retargeting to Category:French words and phrases. Soumya-8974 talk contribs subpages 12:47, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Seriously? The article on the French language doesn't mention any French terms? Hyacinth (talk) 19:40, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The closest we have is probably French language#Vocabulary. Presumably the nominator means there isn't a single place that's truly about French words and phrases. --BDD (talk) 17:38, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Soumya-8974, I could be wrong, but I don't think we usually (ever?) soft redirect from mainspace to category space. Sometimes we do regular redirects, though some editors may object to them as cross-namespace redirects. --BDD (talk) 17:38, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Has been nominated by me for retargeting to Composition of relations some time ago, where, as opposed to the current target, the character is mentioned (Composition of relations#Notational variations). Pings to @Thryduulf and D.Lazard:, who seem to have overlooked this fact, partly because I had not mentioned this in the nomination. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 15:15, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete - I'm assuming it's a questionable typo of Mickey Mouse slim, which was also created by the same user a few years earlier. However, I can't figure out what that is referring to, can't find either word in the article or any of the episode summaries, and can't see any noticeable context from when it was created. ~ mazca talk 15:35, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The target does not mention anything about the "Wikipedia:STFUALREADY" thingy. So obviously, this redirect is very confusing. Seventyfiveyears at 16:50, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • I had to read it several times (St. Fual Ready? Stuff You All Ready?) before I realized that it stands for "Shut The Fuck Up Already." --Guy Macon (talk) 17:45, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • It is there for the subtlety-impaired. As a project space redirect, it does not have to match with precise content. Guy (help! - typo?) 20:43, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as an appropriate a project space redirect. Useful for whenever someone tries to take all humor out of Wikipedia. Also, deleting a redirect does not stop someone from that phrase as a link: See WP:CRAMIITCLOWN. --Guy Macon (talk) 21:01, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was delete. signed, Rosguill talk 15:29, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect was created in 2017 by a user with no other contributions; no mention in article then or now. Boong redirects to List of ethnic slurs, it also occurs in Korean names and is a word with multiple meanings in Vietnamese, although the redirect seems to be unrelated to any of these and is probably either vandalism or an unlikely typo for Amalie Bruun. Peter James (talk) 11:50, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete, seems far too distant from the actual spelling of Bruun to make it a plausible redirect. ~ mazca talk 19:59, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
