WP:PR[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was keep per WP:SNOW -- Tavix (talk) 18:40, 16 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

PR is more commonly used to mean press releases. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 22:39, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Strong keep. Retargetting shortcuts needs to be done very carefully as you risk breaking many incoming links and changing the meaning of discussions. Shortcuts that are commonly used will also gain new uses to the orginal target by people who don't know the target has changed, while people who do know will use it for the new meaning resulting in confusion and people talking past each other. In this case, the redirects have existed pointing to Wikipedia:Peer review for 14 and 13 years and have many incomming links (multiple thousands in the case of WP:PR) and get massive amounts of use - WP:PR has been averaging 10-20 hits a day this year. So unless you have objective evidence that most (not just some) links to WP:PR are incorrectly assuming it goes to the press release page (which I'm not seeing from a spot check) then retargetting will be massively disruptive for little benefit. Thryduulf (talk) 00:20, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: WP shortcuts have no connection to off-site jargon, and the nominator's rationale isn't even right in that that regard (off-site use generally means "public relations", which includes press releases and much else. But it also stands for Puerto Rico, and and many other things. It's simply irrelevant. Most of our shortcuts stand also for something else, somewhere else.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  06:17, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong Keep per those above. — Godsy (TALKCONT) 22:26, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strongly keep. In addition to the above arguments, I'd imagine WP:Identifying and using independent sources § Press releases is only useful in two cases: when explaining the obvious to a paid editor, and when talking about churnalism, which is covered more extensively in WP:CHURN. So even if WP:Peer review didn't exist, I don't think this section merits such a short redirect. What about other options, like WP:Press releases, WP:Public relations, and WP:Public relations (essay)?. The first one is inactive, the second one is itself a redirect to WP:Contact us (to which I obviously wouldn't redirect WP:PR), and the third one is an essay; a good one, but I wouldn't modify a useful redirect for an essay. By the way, I got here by using the said redirect, and I indeed tried to get to WP:Peer review. Professor Proof (talk) 15:47, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Delete. Not notable enough as a municipal election candidate. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 12:39, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep mentioned there, notability isn't the test for redirects but whether there is information there. Galobtter (pingó mió) 20:21, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, -- Tavix (talk) 19:57, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Full flavored cigarettes[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. Folks seem to think there could be an article, so no opposition to pointing these there if it is indeed created. Until then, delete. I'll note that although the AfD for Full flavor (cigarette type) closed as merge, by all accounts the content was never actually merged. ~ Amory (utc) 16:01, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

there is no reference to this phrase in the article, and the phrase has no specific meaning, and is a very unlikely search term, where someone will simply type cigarette Mercurywoodrose (talk) 17:46, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • weak keep It may or may not have specific meaning, but this old version of Full flavor (cigarette type) notes it is (or was) a marketing term opposite to Lights (cigarette type) and so a plausible search term. See for example Vantage (cigarette), Maverick (cigarette), etc. I'll add Full flavour (cigarette type) to this nomination as I don't see any reason to treat them differently. It might be best to create a set index at Cigarette types (c.f. Category:Cigarette types) and target these redirects there. Thryduulf (talk) 20:00, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral as it stands but I'd support a Thryduulf's idea for an article on types of cigarette although it would need to cover the topic as a dubious marketing technique rather than as anything very real. Maybe Lights (cigarette type) could be expanded into that article, as it already covers many of the issues, or Nicotine marketing could be the target. --DanielRigal (talk) 21:24, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • Yes, I wondered about expanding Lights (cigarette type). I'll leave a note on that article's talk page. Thryduulf (talk) 07:20, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • I've done that and also left a note at Talk:Cigarette as the Lights article talk page hadn't been edited since 2013 and there doesn't appear to be a relevant WikiProject to notify. If the outcome of this discussion is anythign other than delete then redirects with the British English spelling of flavour/ed should be created to point to wherever these end up targetting. Thryduulf (talk) 07:26, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete as there is no section to discuss full flavor vs. part flavor? AngusWOOF (barksniff) 02:25, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • AFAICT "part flavor" was never a thing - "full flavour" is/was contrasted with "lights" and "ultra lights". Thryduulf (talk) 10:30, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - It seems as if we need a broad concept article on various tobacco flavorings? I'd like to point out that 'Flavored tobacco' exists right now, but it's currently only a disambiguation page. CoffeeWithMarkets (talk) 09:48, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete both. Due to lack of information in the target article, I don't see how these redirects are helpful. Steel1943 (talk) 19:11, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was keep. Restored and keeping per additional information provided below. ~ Amory (utc) 14:51, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

:The result of the discussion was delete. History suggests it was once used? Per below, can't find anything corroborating that. It is the airport code though. Anyway, transclusions removed from mainspace. ~ Amory (utc) 11:01, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Reopened per below. ~ Amory (utc) 16:03, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The documentation for the target describes CUR as the official FIFA country code, which is not the case according to the Wiki page List of FIFA country codes. No other organization uses this alpha-3 code for Curacao, and therefore, this redirect seems implausible. 2601:589:8000:2ED0:B5D2:CD82:9D:D122 (talk) 17:21, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete. I've checked various lists of country codes and cannot find "CUR" used for Curaçao. It should be deleted because any system at any time might assign that code to something else (e.g. a new breakaway nation); the list of countries in the world doesn't change monthly, but it is not permanently stable.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  06:22, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per SMcCandlish and nominator. I've checked the official FIFA page for the Curaçao national football team and while it doesn't explicitly state the code anywhere, the URL uses "cuw", "CUW" appears in the ranking tables for men's and women's teams and "cur" appears only as part of the whole word Curaçao. Accordingly I've removed its entry from the CUR disambiguation page, linking to this discussion for further information. Thryduulf (talk) 07:36, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. {{CUR}} has several incoming transclusions that need to be bypassed prior to this redirect being deleted. Steel1943 (talk) 05:52, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Previous close ended here ~ Amory (utc) 16:03, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Amorymeltzer: The above discussion misses the fact that "CUR" is the three letter designation used by the IAAF to indicate Curacão in the sport of athletics (many of the transclusions were on athletics pages). Not sure if it's worth reopening this discussion on that basis or not. SFB 13:14, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Sillyfolkboy: That's a reasonable reason, I suppose. Not sure it would have changed the outcome, as the ISO/FIFA rationale still stands, but it is certainly enough to justify heading over to WP:DRV if you're inclined. In the interest of expedition, I'll ping the participants (SMcCandlishThryduulfSteel1943) to see if there are any thoughts. ~ Amory (utc) 14:52, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It is sufficient, and I would strike what I wrote. I wasn't able to find it used legitimately as a code in any system I checked, but I did not check every system of country-code abbreviations, evidently, just those I knew about and/or found in our category for it. So, we need to categorize at least a redirect to a section on IAAF codes, and restore an entry to the CUR disambig page (with IAAF specifically mentioned), and restore the template redirect.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  15:06, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
      • Yeah, I searched for non-ISO/FIFA usage for a while before closing, didn't see this. Not sure what you mean by categorize at least a redirect to a section on IAAF codes? ~ Amory (utc) 16:03, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Amorymeltzer: If you want to restore this page, I'll relist it. Per my comment above, I have no opinion in this discussion, but rather just wanted to ensure that if the redirect was deleted that its incoming transclusions were resolved beforehand. Terms refer to a side character in the Hitman series, but these search are unlikely to ever be searched for. Lordtobi () 13:08, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment Hitman Mr.17 is unused, but Hitman Agent 17 is well used with over 100 hits so far this year, so people are apparently searching for it (and/or it is linked from somewhere external). There is no obvious content about the character in the target, but there was in List of Hitman video game characters which this was previously a redirect to until the list was itself redirected to the franchise article.
The redirection of the list appears to be the subject of a very slow motion edit war and does not seem to have been the subject of any discussion. My gut feeling is to undo the redirect of the list, target all the character redirects back to the list and close the RfDs without prejudice, and launch a publicised discussion somewhere about merging the content. Once the merge discussion concludes and any action is taken, we can reconsider the redirects at that point. I'll ping the video games project about this. Thryduulf (talk) 14:13, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
While there is "Agent 17", there never was "Hitman Agent 17". Agent 17 is still mentioned on the page and that specific redirect was not put up for discussion. Lordtobi () 14:19, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Minor character. "Agent 17" is not mentioned at target nor does it need to be. (Not even mentioned at Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, the ideal redirect for Agent 17, where the character is ostensibly part of the plot. As for the other proposal above, I don't see any valid reason for restoring 85k worth of unsourced plot summary. (not watching, please {{ping}}) czar 14:32, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think anyone would ever search for the Hitman franchise this way. Lordtobi () 13:06, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Refine to Hitman (franchise)#Story overview. This was originally an article about an organisation in the series called "Franchise" or "The Franchise" (last version before the redirect). That was prodded for notability, and I agree with that assessment, but the second paragraph of the Story overview section seems to be entirely about the fictional entity. Thryduulf (talk) 14:01, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

While the target is a People's Party and it is Korean, it is by no means the only one (see List of political parties in South Korea) - indeed the hits on google for the exact phrase seem to be divided among several different parties, with perhaps slightly more than half relating to North Korea. I'm not sure whether deletion or disambiguation is better here? I will leave a note at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Korea and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Politics/Political parties about all these nominations. Thryduulf (talk) 12:47, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was retarget to Gungmindang. ~ Amory (utc) 16:19, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Another name that is seemingly not used by the target political party, nor particularly for them. As the target article's name suggests there are a lot of parties in South Korea that have been named "People's Party" or some variation thereof, and as an exact phrase this search term seems to have been used for several of them, so I suggest retarget to List of political parties in South Korea where the correct one desired can be found. Thryduulf (talk) 12:40, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • My usual inclination here would be to retarget to the disambiguation page People's Party, taking this as both natural and incomplete disambiguation. I don't know how quickly readers could find their desired topics on that page, though I'd say the same about List of political parties in South Korea. --BDD (talk) 13:52, 13 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • @BDD: If the People's Party dab were tweaked so that the sections were made sub-headings we could link to People's Party#South Korea (and add any not mentioned there, my memory is of their being more on the political parties list but I haven't checked) which would be more useful than my suggested target. Without being able to link directly to a section though I'd lean very slightly towards the political parties list as able to be more inclusive of misrememberings than a dab page - if we do retarget to the dab page a see-also to the list of political parties would I think cover this fine. Thryduulf (talk) 11:20, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
How about sections by continent? Countries would mean a lot of small subsections. --BDD (talk) 14:25, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thryduulf, I think I figured it out. I was about to comment on the above section that we should do the same with this redirect and that one. Noticing the disambiguator on the target article here, I wondered what People's Party (South Korea) was. Turns out it's a redirect to Gungmindang. I'm thinking we retarget both there, right? Any Korean political party known as "People's Party" should probably be there, and it's more directly and helpfully organized for answering the query compared to the other alternatives we've identified. --BDD (talk) 17:06, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • Good find, that does indeed seem to be the best solution. Thryduulf (talk) 20:08, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No valid target for this redirect. Tvx1 11:41, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Retarget to Thailand motorcycle Grand Prix, which does get called by this name. There are/were some badminton and martial arts events with "Thailand" and "Grand Prix" in the name but none seem to be/have been commonly called the "Thai Grand Prix" or "Thailand Grand Prix" (certainly for badminton, "Thailand Masters" seems to be the common short name). If there are other events in the future with this name (the country does want to host an F1 grand prix for example) then this can be retargetted, disambiguated and/or hatnotes added at that time. All redirects created either by Kenrick'sGJSALover (talk · contribs) or by indef-blocked Kenricklenno2001 (talk · contribs) who is probably a previous account of the same user.
