Implausible redirect when the subject did not know his own middle name. Should be deleted as speculative at best. Snuggums (talk / edits) 20:06, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • So this is awkward. I found a number of sources for "Randall," but it looks like we may have a case of citogenesis here. (Funny, given that the word "citogenesis" was coined by Randall Munroe.) Basically, for years, this article referred to him as "Harry Randall Truman", without any source attesting to the middle name. In that time, USA Today picked it up, as did Find A Grave and even the book Caesar's Last Breath by Sam Kean. While it's a shame that an error on here had such widespread effects, I think we have no choice but to keep this redirect as an {{r from incorrect name}} due to its widespread use. It may also be a good idea to change the clause in the article about his middle name to something like While some non-contemporaneous sources have given his middle name as Randall, Truman stated that he did not know his middle name, but rather just the initial, R.— PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 00:55, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Awkward indeed. I guess now the question comes down to whether it should be used as a footnote within opening sentence or the "life" section of his article. Snuggums (talk / edits) 02:22, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - The error didn't start here. Harry Randall Truman was adopted based on the Find a Grave site; I only recently changed the article name to Harry R. Truman. Therefore, I don't think it should be deleted, because it may well be a correct name, but there are no reliable sources that support Randall as his middle name. I hope that clarifies the situation. ceranthor 04:28, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • USA Today is overall a credible publication (not as sure about the Sam Kean book), but if he really didn't know what his middle name was after all, then it would help to have a note like PinkAmpersand suggested should the redirect be kept. Snuggums (talk / edits) 04:31, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think both the book and USA Today can be trusted. I'm more than happy to make a change per PinkAmpersand's suggestion (btw, PinkAmpersand, happy to see another Georgetown alum/student editing on here! :) ceranthor 04:44, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • In that case, I withdraw this nomination and let's use both refs for now to accompany that note. Snuggums (talk / edits) 05:04, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Article arguably does not pertain to the topic of the target article, which only has some creatures and does not claim to be a list of them. Any history in the redirect is purely fancruft and has since been transwikied. ZXCVBNM (TALK) 02:26, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete not described in the article. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 22:39, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Restore a version of this page as an article, and send to WP:AFD. After seeing this edit which removed over 100k from this page, I'm not sure what version to restore. However, since I don't see an WP:AFD for this page, that should happen to form consensus to delete this page's edit history. Steel1943 (talk) 01:06, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Target page does not pertain to the topic of the redirect. Unnecessary/fancruft, merits deletion. ZXCVBNM (TALK) 02:21, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete per WP:GAMEGUIDE AngusWOOF (barksniff) 22:40, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Restore this revision and send to WP:AFD. As this redirect is a {{R with history}} (the revision I linked is over 81k in size), deleting so much edit history in one swoop is out of the scope of RfD and should be done at AfD. This redirect was the result of a seemingly undiscussed WP:BLANKANDREDIRECT. Steel1943 (talk) 00:22, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Restore per Steel1943. There's been over 2,000 edits to the article—deletion of this much content needs to take place at AfD. (The nominator is actually the top editor to the former article.) -- Tavix (talk) 03:05, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • Back when I was editing it, it was a long time ago when fancruft policies were far more lax on Wikipedia. And as I recall, there were no Wikias to stick in-universe information, making people go to Wikipedia as the de facto source. But, I understand if it needs to go to AfD. I would still vote delete, due to the change in policies and the fact that the Metroid Wikia now contains all that info.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 05:59, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was keep. Korstanje, M. E. is a potentially viable search term that may be sought by outside searches and is within the style that many printed encyclopedias use. Having a redirect to this version of the name may prove beneficial/useful in the future. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this close, please do let me know on my talk page (and please be civil). (non-admin closure) TheSandDoctor (talk) 04:38, 11 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Improbable search term Guy (Help!) 21:28, 28 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Guy, May I say au contraire. Korstanje, M. E. - Google Search yields results for books and articles where that's the nomenclature ie "surname, name and/or initial". It makes it easier for indexing and for a future print index; "{{R from sort name}}" is added to such redirects. Granted wikipedia at present doesn't have any articles that contain "Korstanje, M. E." but outside searches are a possibility. Similar applies to "Korstanje, Maximiliano E.". "Maximiliano Emanuel Korstanje" yields more results on Google.

I've been through this with other redirects I've made. The consensus is keep in those cases. eg discussion to address the redirect Stromboulopoulos, George All the best. DadaNeem (talk) 00:01, 29 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete Wikipedia does not use surname-first format. Astonishingly I find we apparently do. PamD 00:10, 29 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi PamD. Excuse me but what do you mean by "Wikipedia does not use surname-first format"? DadaNeem (talk) 03:41, 29 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I mean just that: Wikipedia does not use "Smith, John" as an article title although many printed encyclopedias would do so. It does not in general provide a redirect from that version to "John Smith". But I now see that there are some 80k redirects of this sort - though only a tiny proportion of all biographical articles - so it's not worth the bother of fighting here against the existence of these two, although I still consider them totally unnecessary and mildly unhelpful (in that they might encourage a reader or editor to start to expect to find an article or link at this inverted form instead of using the standard Wikipedia form of "forename surname"). On the other hand I do believe that it's useful, even important, to provide redirects from every plausible version of a person's non-inverted name, such as the redirect from Maximiliano Emanuel Korstanje: I create a lot of these, and it's pleasing how often they manage to turn an existing redlink blue, perhaps in a list of award-winners where people are listed with their formal full names. They also make it less likely that a future editor will accidentally create a duplicate article at a plausible alternative name. PamD 09:17, 29 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Killiondude (talk) 00:11, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as a fairly standard {{R from sort name}}: these don't yet exist for every biography but new ones get constantly created and it's likely that we will eventually catch up. This is is one of the things that I've heard wikipedia actually getting praised for. – Uanfala (talk) 14:45, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was keep. It appears reasonable that a full name of an individual would be useful as it could very well be a viable search term.
