Andrew Winters[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was retarget and delete, respectively. --BDD (talk) 16:40, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There is only one "Andrew Winters" mentioned on the disambiguation page, the founding member of Blue Öyster Cult. There is no need for "Andrew Winters" to redirect to this non-matching disambiguation page. I propose to retarget to Blue Öyster Cult. BD2412 T 20:31, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

  • I created that redirect, and support your position; I'm the only watcher of that page, I kinda wonder why you didn't just... do it, retarget it as proposed? Or ask me if I agreed (which I do), before burdening RfD? I recommend that this be retargetted as proposed immediately, and the RfD Speedy Closed as useless. This is not controversial. ☺ · Salvidrim! ·  21:45, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • I have seen actions that I would consider completely unobjectionable draw vociferous objections. BD2412 T 14:00, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
      • Hopefully that doesn't stop you from being bold and doing things proactively. :) ☺ · Salvidrim! ·  14:26, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget Andrew Winters per b2412 and Delete Andrew Winters (disambiguation)Andrew Winter (disambiguation), which I added to the nom. Quite right to bring to RfD as a mere mortal cannot be bold and delete the associated "(disambiguation)" R, which has 690 (115) hit/day on average. Would that be left to dangle at close had a cutie like me not think of it? (My guess is yes, probably closing admins do check these things.) Created by Salvidrim at about the same time. Si Trew (talk) 00:25, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - since no opposition has been presented to this and the creator of the redirect supports it, it's an easy close, but I can't because it involves deletion. I would tag it as G7 and refer to this conversation, except Salvidrim! didn't explicitly support deletion of the dab redirect, which Simon pointed out afterwards. Sal, if you're not comfortable deleting the redirect yourself, could you tag it for speedy and let someone else take care of it? This has sat open a while. Ἀφορισμός[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was Delete. Ricky81682 (talk) 21:04, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Delete. Aphorisms are not specifically related to Greek and French. Gorobay (talk) 18:05, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete all per nom. 'Nuff said. Si Trew (talk) 22:20, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Not quite enough. Many are marked as {{R from alternate language|el}} that are not Greek to start with. F'rexample, Aphorizo: The nearest I get from Interlanguage links (and this could well be my bias from living in Hungary) is Hungarian: hu:Aforizma — and Hungarian doesn't have gender so no -a, -o business there as in Spanish etc) — and Albanian sq:Aforizmi, a language I don't know anything about. If nothing else, the Interlanguage links are serving better than these redirects. A cut and paste job? Si Trew (talk) 00:45, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Aphorizo is a transliteration of αφορίζω. Gorobay (talk) 01:38, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • And is not at el:αφορίζω or el:Αφορίζω (I assume Greek WP disregards initial cap like EN:WP does?) or el:Aphorismos. Why should it be at English WP in the Greek alphabet if EL:WP can't put it in Latin alphabet? I do realise you said "Delete" in the first place, I say so to emphasise it. Si Trew (talk) 07:42, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - directs readers to the content they're looking for; no reason has been suggested for deletion. Such redirects are useful in overcoming systematic bias, and generally being pleasant to new editors. WilyD 11:36, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
WP:RFD#DELETE reason #8; fails WP:UE "Names not originally in a Latin alphabet, such as Greek, Chinese, or Russian names, must be transliterated"; I don't see how WP:BIAS or WP:BITE apply. Si Trew (talk) 07:58, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete The concept of an aphorism isn't specific to any language or culture. --BDD (talk) 16:52, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Implausible search term, invented name. - TheChampionMan1234 10:06, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Delete/comment - Arbitrary redirect created by editor who has been blocked several times for their bizarre editing behaviour, including an apparent obsession with random redirect creations and changes. Wouldn't object to this being deleted. Mabalu (talk) 11:21, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong delete. I thought to leave it just go as delete by default, but someone is bound to say keep, so I better !vote. I checked up the behaviour of the creator and it is as User:Mabalu states. (talk) 07:56, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Nonsense redirect created by a user with a history of disruption. Ivanvector (talk) 20:24, 20 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Big Brother is Watching[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was retarget to Nineteen Eighty-Four. (non-admin closure) There is clear consensus to include Big Brother Is Watching in this result. Ivanvector (talk) 20:44, 20 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Delete redirect since it's potentially confusing (with the phrase Big Brother is watching in 1984) and the redirected target is just some obscure album 14.100.132.83 (talk) 13:15, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I was probably looking at the inverse, Big Brother is Watching You, by mistake. Si Trew (talk) 21:20, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget both to Nineteen Eighty-Four per Thryduulf. --Lenticel (talk) 01:26, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak retarget both per above, with the misgiving that we have both "is" and "Is" alt caps for the shorter redirects but not for the longer. But I know, I know, creation and deletion are not symmetrical... Si Trew (talk) 21:20, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • But lose the hatnote if retargeted, with the spirit of WP:UNDUE "prominence of placement". C'mon, you can't sensibly have "This article refers to a bestselling dystopia. For a track on the B side of an album, see..."Si Trew (talk) 08:06, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

An-Nu'man ibn Bashir[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. --BDD (talk) 16:51, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

apple-to-orange redirect that imho should be deleted: an-Nu'man was Bashir's son, Bashir was a companion of Mohammed (the prophet) and military person, an-Nu'man was rather a functionary or politician. And he - being notable on his own with his very own biography - is not being mentioned in his daddy's article at all. → «« Man77 »» 19:00, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Off topic, but do we have any guidelines on whether "ibn" ("child of", roughly) should have initial cap? Si Trew (talk) 08:43, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • I've not found any guidelines, but every time it appears as a middle name (that's the wrong term but I can't think of the correct one) in Category:Arab people it is not capitalised. Thryduulf (talk) 11:35, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
      • That's at least the guideline of German WP, ibn when "inside" the nasab (as for instance Hasan ibn Ali), Ibn when in the beginning (as for instance Ibn Khaldun) → «« Man77 »» 16:34, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thanks, that's pretty much what I thought, but I couldn't find a guideline (I suppose it should be treated as a conjunction like "of"). I think I had to change it when translating some artical connected to Casablanca tramway from the French, but I can't find any trace of it. If I recall, I let it stand with caps "Ibn" in the middle but was doubtful it should be so. Si Trew (talk) 22:17, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
