Silicone Valley[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was retarget to Silicon Valley. Consensus is that the misspelling is more likely to be intended than the adult entertainment use. Thryduulf (talk) 16:51, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Confusing redirect. Unclear how common Silicone Valley is used to describe the adult film industry. Appears to cause more confusion for people who don't understand silicon vs. silicone. Optigan13 (talk) 19:26, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Retarget to Silicon Valley. 'Silicone Valley' is not mentioned at the target so this redirect simply serves to confuse. However it is a very plausible typo for 'Silicon Valley'. The Whispering Wind (talk) 21:19, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to Silicon Valley per The Whispering Wind. Cursory Google search also shows that it's usually considered as a misspelling of Silicon Valley.---Lenticel (talk) 05:11, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as-is. google:"Silicone Valley" porn. --John Vandenberg (chat) 06:51, 29 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I do appreciate that there are many more cases where Silicon Valley is mispelt, (even one notably mispelt), but I don't think we let mispellings trump proper noun redirects (I havent checked the policies and guidelines on that). This use does appear to be the primary use of the term. However I've found a few cases of it being used more generally ([1][2][3]), some intentionally misusing the term[4], one barely ambiguous artwork[5], one artwork that could be a mispelling[6], and there are a few brands which have adopted this turn of phrase, most barely notable, but also a bra from a very notable brand[7]. Maybe a dab page could be justified? John Vandenberg (chat) 11:53, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disambiguate. The term has been added, with citations, to San_Fernando_Valley#Adult_entertainment. However, the misspelling is very common. —rybec 07:28, 29 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It appears your edits adding the nickname have reverted. -Optigan13 (talk) 18:22, 29 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. However, Wiktionary covers both meanings. —rybec 20:28, 29 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to Silicon Valley. There is no content at the redirected site which refers to 'Silicone Valley'. It does though serve to cause confusion as it is an easy typo for 'Silicon Valley'. Imveracious (talk) 16:56, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It was Imveracious who deleted the information from the target article. —rybec 06:47, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, for the reasons others as well as myself have stated here. Two, more appropriate, far more used and not confusing nicknames is enough. Imveracious (talk) 15:42, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Someone should add a hatnote to indicate "Silicon Valley" at "San Fernando Valley" for the redirect "Silicone Valley" (or if it is repointed, "San Fernando Valley" at "Silcon Valley") -- 76.65.128.112 (talk) 00:44, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
user:rybec has now added a link to Silicon Valley into the prose in the section where Silicone Valley redirects to. John Vandenberg (chat) 02:10, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Next gen consoles[edit]

I'm not automatically suggesting a deletion of this redirect. However, given that this redirect's title ("Next gen consoles") feels more like a term rather than a historical description of the current generation of video game consoles, I'm bringing this redirect up for discussion. Either we re-point it to History of video game consoles (eighth generation), or we delete it, I think. Heymid (contribs) 10:46, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Geothermal energy exhibition[edit]

The result of the discussion was keep. --BDD (talk) 22:56, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This Redirect should be deleted as redundant. I already created a simpler Redirect, which is "Geothermal energy exhibition" without the "The" at the left. The Redirect I created will be much more commonly typed in the search bar, being simpler. The Mysterious El Willstro (talk) 07:09, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep. Redundancy is not a reason to delete redirects, and this one is harmless and linked so deleting it will be disruptive. Thryduulf (talk) 11:35, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Did you know? - Puerto Rico[edit]

The result of the discussion was moved to P:PR/DYK without leaving a redirect. --BDD (talk) 22:52, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is the only cross namespace redirect that starts with Did you know. The page stats has a bug that does means it doesnt work on this redirect. See http://stats.grok.se/en/201309/Did_you_know?_-_Puerto_Rico vs http://stats.grok.se/en/201309/Did_you_know . Other portals with DYK subpages typically use a suffix, like P:HVNY/DYK, P:GDYK, P:CDYK, and P:AU/DYK. I propose that we move this page to P:PRDYK or P:PR/DYK, without leaving a redirect behind, so this anomaly is removed while the history of it is retained, and this page has a shorter, easier to type shortcut. John Vandenberg (chat) 04:54, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This was previously discussed at Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2011_March_7#Did_you_know.3F_-_Puerto_Rico, but that was due to an editing dispute. John Vandenberg (chat) 06:45, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Gosh Numbers[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. JohnCD (talk) 15:12, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This redirect was created in 2006 after Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gosh Numbers resulted in "no consensus". There is no mention of "Gosh Numbers" in the Frederik Pohl article, so that anyone who searches for this topic on Wikipedia will be redirected to Pohl's page but will not learn anything about what "Gosh Numbers" are. This redirect is unhelpful, and consequently I would recommend deletion. Metropolitan90 (talk) 03:13, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • delete Book hits are next to nonexistent: basically Beyond the Blue Event Horizon (where they are a passing aside) and nothing else definite. There aren't other books referring to Pohl's coinage. Web hits are also thin and a lot of them are spurious or searchbait. We don't mention the passage in the article on the book, and there doesn't seem to be a reason to do so; and there's no other possible target. Mangoe (talk) 16:14, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - never gained traction or use, even in the SF fan and writer community. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:57, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia terminology created in March 2010 due to User_talk:Jackehammond/Archive_6#New_Enforcer_in_Town, and only ever linked to twice since then, both times by User:Jackehammond. John Vandenberg (chat) 00:59, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
