Bluefin tuna (disambiguation)[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was Keep. Nonadmin closure; as nom I'm the only one advocating for delete. While I maintain there's a subtle difference between the examples cited in policy and this instance, it's not a distinction worth arguing about, nor is there any support for deleting it (I restored the old links per Certes as well). Shadowjams (talk) 20:13, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There's no need for a specific .... (disambiguation) page here. The original page has always been a dab page, and we only create the secondary (disambiguation) version if the first has a primary article on it. Shadowjams (talk) 02:01, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I created the redirect to show that Bluefin intentionally links to another, more specific disambiguation page as described in WP:FURTHERDAB and WP:DDAB. If there is a better way to do this then by all means delete Bluefin tuna (disambiguation) and fix the link from Bluefin in some other way. Certes (talk) 03:24, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Clarification: Since I added the redirect, dab Bluefin has changed. My comment above refers to this version. Certes (talk) 21:23, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep WP:INTDABLINK. 76.65.128.132 (talk) 08:21, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Where does it say that in that policy? Shadowjams (talk) 09:45, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
To link to a disambiguation page (rather than to a page whose topic is a specific meaning), link to the title that includes the text "(disambiguation)", even if that is a redirect—for example, link to the redirect America (disambiguation) rather than the target page at "America". 76.65.128.132 (talk) 10:02, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. However, there is no page that links to it now, and so the creation seems unnecessarily premature, not to mention that it could possibly be moved in the future (if Bluefin tuna were to be expanded), but whatever. Shadowjams (talk) 11:03, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This page linked to it at the time. If we decide to keep the redirect, I suggest reinstating that version to link to the redirect again. Certes (talk) 13:34, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: creating DAB placeholders facilitates further editing. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talk) 09:56, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
First off, no it doesn't. Second, it hampers any future moves, for instance if we wanted to move Bluefin tuna to Bluefin tuna (disambiguation) we'd have to go through extra hoops; this could happen if say someone made an umbrella article about Bluefin tuna generally. Third, I don't see any policy that supports dab placeholders. And maybe you misunderstand... this is not a dab placeholder... it's a dab redirect... there already is a dab page. Shadowjams (talk) 09:45, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per WP:INTDABLINK. Armbrust, B.Ed. Let's talkabout my edits? 19:32, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep correct application of WP:INTDABLINK. --JaGatalk 04:18, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What?! Maybe the history is unclear here. Where in INTDABLINK does it say anything about supporting this sort of situation? Can someone please point that out to me? The situation is Bluefin tuna is a disambiguation page. A Bluefin tuna (disambiguation) redirects to Bluefin tuna. Why do we need multiple disambiguation page redirects? I can't find any support for that practice. Maybe I missed it... but please point that out. It makes no sense to go creating disambiguation-redirects pages that are identical except they have the (disambiguation) suffix. Shadowjams (talk) 09:42, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The purpose of the (disambiguation) suffix is to show that this is an intentional link to a disambiguation page, rather than an incomplete attempt to link to one particular meaning of bluefin tuna. To quote WP:FURTHERDAB (part of WP:INTDABLINK), omitting irrelevant bullet points:
When to link to a disambiguation page
The exceptions, when an intentional link to a disambiguation page is appropriate, are:
The classic example used in dab policy explanations is Mercury (disambiguation), as linked from Mercur, Mercurius, etc. Certes (talk) 11:04, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
