Libyan civil war[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was Change back to a redirect. Ruslik_Zero 18:46, 11 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Covert back to redirect There are 2 reasons which I believe this page should be converted back into a redirect:

  • 1) Libya was created as a political entity in 1934 by the union of the colonies of Tripolitania, Fezzan, and Cyrenaica by Italy, and thus any conflicts which occurred before the date of creation cannot properly be referred to as "Libyan civil wars".
  • 2) There are no sources which refer to any of the conflicts before 2011 as "Libyan civil war", and thus there is no evidence that any of them could be confused with the "2011 Libyan civil war". A good point of comparison is the disambiguation page for Egyptian Revolution.

  • Keep. Sources do describe the pre-1934 provinces of Tripolitania, Fezzan, and Cyrenaica as "Libya", presumably for convenience (listing all three regions gets cumbersome after a while). See for example here, which states "At the outset of the nineteenth century, Libya could best be characterised as a quasi-independent Ottoman province". In the same source on the same page, "civil war" is described as having occurred between 1793 and 1795. While the proper names of these conflicts should not be "Libyan civil war", it is entirely plausible that a searcher might be looking for one of these older conflicts when searching for a civil war that occurred in Libya, or lands which today make up Libya. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 12:46, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - I'm rather confused by this nomination, which seems to be arguing for the conversion of a disambiguation page into a redirect, but the title Libyan Civil War has always been a redirect to the article presently at 2011 Libyan civil war (it had other titles before then)? Lothar von Richtofen's comment seems to be an argument for keeping this non-existent disambiguation page not keeping the redirect? In any event, the present conflict is clearly the primary topic for the term "Libyan civil war" (by any capitalisation) and previous conflicts can be linked to via a hatnote from the 2011 Libyan civil war article. Thryduulf (talk) 12:53, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that's correct, the article was first called 2011 Libyan Protests, then 2011 Libyan Uprising, and now 2011 Libyan civil war. The page in question has existed since March 9th, first as a redirect to uprising and then as a redirect to civil war. I am arguing that the page should revert to being a redirect as per my 2 points above, and I agree that a hatnote would be much more appropriate (when the other pages are created). I have altered my request to better explain my intent.174.114.87.236 (talk) 16:54, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Convert back into redirect The term Libyan Civil War refers exclusively to the present conflict. English Civil War does not link to a disambiguation page refering to the War of the Roses, the Peasants Revolt, excetra. The Proffesor (talk) 17:00, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • The key difference here is that "English Civil War" is a well-established term from many years of scholarly works, whereas "Libyan Civil War" borders on being a Wiki-Neologism. The conflict is so recent that insufficient literature has been generated to determine an exact name for this ongoing conflict. As for the other conflicts, I am ambivalent as to whether or not they should be called "Libyan civil wars", but it is entirely plausible that they might be termed as such. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 16:06, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Confused The page 2011 Libyan Civil War does not exisit per WP:CAPS, the page redirects to 2011 Libyan civil war. As for Libyan civil war it is being discussed in a move request here - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 17:01, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I thought I fixed the caps last night but in my eagerness to sleep I did not hit save page...doh, I fixed them now. 174.114.87.236 (talk) 17:06, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Convert back into redirect A page can not be both a redirect and a disamb page, seeing that the term refers to the current conflict, covert back per The Proffesor. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 17:22, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Convert back into redirect. People using this search term are looking for the present conflict of the same name. Rreagan007 (talk) 17:26, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Convert back into redirect. What is the point of this discussion? It is process creep. This is a wiki, if an edit obviously needs to be done, you can just do it. --dab (𒁳) 06:43, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
