Yama nashi ochi nashi imi nashi[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was keep. JohnCD (talk) 12:34, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I was debating whether to nominate this redirect to not, but it is very unlikely that someone will use this Japanese phrase to search for the article on yaoi. If the reader already knows the phrase, then they will also know its acronym. And without the commas, it is an implausible search term. —Farix (t | c) 22:47, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep. This is discussed in some detail in the target article, due to it being the origin of the abbreviated term "Yaoi". It might very well be searched on by readers who want to know whether we have any discussion of the longer phrase - which we do, in the target article. Note that I've created the redirect Yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi, with commas, though I don't necessarily agree that one version is more likely than the other to be searched on. Gavia immer (talk) 22:57, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep if they found the phrase and tried to look it up, you'd need the redirect. As for plausibility without the commas, I think it is plausible since many people don't put in punctuation into search boxes. 76.66.193.119 (talk) 23:20, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - it is a simple redirect from transliteration of a famous Japanese phrase into its English acronym. Transliteration would typically not include English punctuation marks. - Richard Cavell (talk) 23:48, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - people tend to copy and paste such terms that they have found in external sites into the search window so its plausible. Bridgeplayer (talk) 00:06, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Using commas can be user preferenced and there are Japanese speakers out there. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 04:14, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. I unfortunately know a lot of people who never use commas, which makes this a plausible search term. —Quasirandom (talk) 14:14, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stop! My ass hurts![edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was keep. JohnCD (talk) 12:32, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Implausible redirect and potentially offensive in nature. No singular correlation between the redirect and the target article. This redirect could, logically, be to any article dealing with male homosexuality, anal sex, or kicking someone's ass. Apparently created by and editor simply trying to be "cute". —Farix (t | c) 22:15, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete. Not a plausible term for searching or linking, and in view of the other issues with this redirect it ought to be deleted. Gavia immer (talk) 22:45, 31 July 2010 (UTC) Changing to Weak Keep per this explanation. Gavia immer (talk) 23:29, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - I am familiar with the Japanese language. See Homosexuality in Japan. Yaoi is a backronym for "Yamete, oshiri itai" which literally means "Stop, my ass hurts!". - Richard Cavell (talk) 23:41, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - I notice, in passing, that the creator is an admin so, no doubt, an explanation will be forthcoming. Some explanation of the term is given in Homosexuality in Japan#Anime and manga. Bridgeplayer (talk) 00:03, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. Richard Cavell isn't quite right. "Yamete, oshiri itai" is a common folk etymology for "yaoi" -- I'm surprised that the article doesn't mention it in the "Terminology" section . --Carnildo (talk) 03:02, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It is mentioned in the Yaoi#Usage section briefly - "A joking alternative acronym among fujoshi (female yaoi fans) for yaoi is Yamete, oshiri ga itai (やめて お尻が 痛い?, "Stop, my butt hurts!")" (references removed). Talk:Yaoi/Archive_2#Stop.21_My_arse_hurts.21 may also be illuminating. Although, I'm unsure why people would be discussing the backronym without also using the term itself, thus necessitating the redirect. --Malkinann (talk) 22:13, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well, what's the difference between backronym and folk etymology? Whether the speaker is aware that their putative etymological explanation is mistaken? - Richard Cavell (talk) 03:18, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Possible search term based on the evidence found. Hey it may be offensive but it is what it is =p. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 04:17, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Delete double redirect, unused. Brianhe (talk) 21:50, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep - entirely plausible search term that is used a few times each month. Doesn't meet WP:RFD#DELETE. Harmless. No reason to delete. Bridgeplayer (talk) 22:00, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. Not a double redirect, but rather a redirect to a disambiguation page, which you would expect not to have any links to it. Moreover, it appears to be a likely search term, and it will always be ambiguous, so targeting the disambiguation page helps our readers find what they are looking for. The result of the discussion was Retarget to Intel Science Talent Search. Feel free to convert it to a dab. Ruslik_Zero 18:41, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why does this redirect to the song? The abbreviation is not mentioned anywhere in the article and I've never heard of the song normally being abbreviated like this. Perhaps there is a better target for this redirect? There is an http://ISTS.com but it doesn't look like there's an article for them.

Update: I just discovered there's a Intel Science Talent Search, propose retargeting to that article. -- œ 05:32, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Retarget as appropriate, or delete. No apparent connection to any link on the disambig page to which this points. bd2412 T 02:50, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

  • Restore article at this version - she had a small part in the Scottish sitcom 'The High Life' and a bunch of other roles - see here. I am not enthusiastic about selecting one of many roles and redirecting an actor/actress there. However, she may be notable; I am not sufficiently expert in the field to say. Better to restore the article, Prod it, and see if someone is prepared to take it on. Bridgeplayer (talk) 03:14, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why on earth would anyone redirect "Jared Elliott" to "New Zealand"? Who is he? Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 10:21, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete. I think the author is just an unremarkable person by the name Jared Elliott who lives in New Zealand. --Stickee (talk) 10:27, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Redirect to Elliott Bay. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 08:52, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete My argument is with the fact that there would be others called Jared Elliott who might be more notable, or might become more notable later on[2][3][4][5][6]. So it might make more sense to delete this redirect. ♪ ♫ Wifione ♫ ♪ ―Œ ♣Łeave Ξ мessage♣ 04:52, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Speedy delete. Totally implausible redirect. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 18:29, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - I appreciate Wifione's research. However, the existence of other possibly notable people is not a reason to deprive users of such information as we have. The alternative approach would be to create a disambiguation page with red links for those who are notable. This has the advantage of encouraging article creation. The result of the discussion was retarget to Valuation (algebra)#P-adic valuation on a Dedekind domain. JohnCD (talk) 11:25, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion: this term exists absolutely nowhere in the literature. Neither google books nor google scholar return results for this term. As an added bonus, no articles even link to this redirect. RobHar (talk) 02:30, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just to be clear, the paper you've suggested does not contain the term "Dedekind valuation", rather it says "Dedekind valuation ring", i.e. a valuation ring that is Dedekind. I suppose the retarget you're suggesting would not do harm. RobHar (talk) 16:44, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was delete. JohnCD (talk) 11:19, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lisa Robertson was a QANTAS flight attendant and prostitute who had sex with Ralph Fiennes in an airplane toilet. It was all over the news in Australia for ages, however interest has now died off. Lisa Robertson was judged unsuitable for her own article at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lisa Robertson (Australian). I think the redirect is a very unlikely search term. Please note that I am not requesting G7, since I created this redirect to assist the participants at AfD and the redirect belongs to them as much as it belongs to me. Richard Cavell (talk) 02:23, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete as a non useful and unwieldy redirect. The redirect produced from the Afd is sufficient. --Lenticel (talk) 04:35, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. This is no good due to BLP issues, and the other existing redirect is sufficient. Gavia immer (talk) 17:41, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • Comment - I proposed that the article be deleted, so I'm not going to argue with your 'delete' !vote, but may I suggest that there are no BLP issues. Everything said about Lisa Robertson on Wikipedia, including my nomination and the redirect, is verifiably true (and openly admitted to by the subject herself). - Richard Cavell (talk) 23:50, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Nonetheless, needless negative material (like calling out the fact that she was fired) can be a serious issue for non-public figures who happen to have been in the news. I should have specified WP:BLP1E, the more relevant link, rather than the general WP:BLP policy. Gavia immer (talk) 00:03, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - actually this is quite a useful search term; someone entering 'Lisa Robertson' into the search box would readily find the person they want from the disambiguation.
