  • Keep - potentially useful (for linking, outside searches, etc.). Redirects are not only for our own internal search engine. Note that there is currently a naming dispute going on at the target, so (as of this writing) Flag of the Republic of Ireland is actually a redirect to Flag of Ireland. -- Gavia immer (talk) 13:27, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Other search engine's check for all capitalizations too. The actual article is properly under Flag of the Republic of Ireland. The only reason it would be needed is if someone typed it directly into the address bar with one part capitalized and the other lower. People who make those kind of mistakes will have learned by now how to use the search function. This redirect is completely useless.Dayleyj 13:35, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Linking is irrelivant (see above). The harm is the logical consequence of making 10 redirects to every page to assure that anyone typing random combinations of capitals and lowers into their address bar won't have to use the search function. Capitalization redirects do nothing, and if we keep making them they will cause harm. If you don't have an argument against my reasons why it causes harm, then you have nothing to say and probably shouldn't post a, "because its what I think" comment with implied personal attacks. I didn't mean it as an attack... I'm trying to get across that these really do serve a purpose, and I think it's a tad confusing that people are arguing that the "harm" these are doing is more damaging than having them around for what I like to call address bar laziness. --- RockMFR 01:35, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that typing directly into the address bar doesn't correct for capitals. That's not a sufficient purpose. I don't know that you're getting the picture of literal millions of useless redirects. Peole who can't capitalize should use the search function and will when their misstype comes up with nothing. The precedent is to keep capitalization redirects, not delete them. We do not encourage them, but we don't delete them if someone creates them by mistake. We even have a template, {{R from other capitalisation}}, and a category, Category:Redirects from other capitalisations for them. Redirects are cheap and #2 and #5 of the avoid deleting such redirects apply here. -- JLaTondre 21:33, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
