if i do wrong editing to any wikipedia articles, so what will happen to me? i know nothing will happen to me, wikipedia just blocks me from editing thats all. but what about this, somebody edited the John Seigenthaler article in a wrong way leads to "Seigenthaler incident". finally what happened to the person who edited in wrong way? Good-faith edits that unintentially violate policy are simply reverted. See Wikipedia:Vandalism for how deliberate problem edits are defined and dealt with here. The Siegenthaler incident was unusual because it involved the biography of a living person, so might have had wider implications both for Wikipedia itself and for the person concerned (who had also drawn his employer into the matter by using a workplace computer to make the offending edit, and who almost lost his job as a result). Because we don't have a crystal ball we cannot predict the future, but a Google search will show you various cases where the law has been invoked to deal with user-generated content - on sites like Facebook, for example. Adding a Proof to Apollonius' Theorem page

I am a brand new member. I joined because I would like to add content to the Proof section to Apollonius" Theorem. The current proof depends on trigonometric identities, and I would like to add a more basic one that only depends on geometry. I will need to include a reference diagram and mathematical equations. finding the creation date of a wiki page - Ted Kennedy

At any article, you can click on "history" to see the list of revisions to the page. You can then click on "earliest" to see the oldest revisions, rather than the most recent ones. The first revision of the article, the "original" article, will be at the bottom. Clicking on the date-links will show you what the article looked like at the time. I was on Jimmy Wales' talk page and I suggested a new wiki, WikiQuestions. Jimmy hasn't replied yet, but other users have. One suggested to come her since I've only joined recently. Hi Lucky102. Proposals for new Wikimedia projects are made at Meta-Wiki, the global community site for the Wikimedia Foundation's projects and related projects. See specifically m:Proposals for new projects. An IP address actually created a page there called m:Wikiquestions, but it is an empty page and the person never followed-up, so it's impossible to tell what exactly they were intending. Have you considered that this might be redundant with our already well-established and well-staffed reference desk?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 20:30, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

I think Fughettaboutit means that our reference desk is a well-established site (or set of sites) where people ask questions and others answer them as best they can. Did you mean something other than that with your proposal? --ColinFine (talk) 21:26, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
You only revealed the name "WikiQuestions" and not what the wiki should do. Fuhghettaboutit probably wondered whethered your suggestion might be similar to Wikipedia's reference desk where users can ask and answer questions not about Wikipedia. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:26, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
Exactly as to both. Without anything else to go on but the title "WikiQuestions", I think most people would assume your idea is the creation of question and answer Wikimedia project, which is what the reference desk is, albeit, subsumed within the Wikipedia project.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:05, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

The Report On Manufactures

Reading the Report on Manufactures, you will notice that the Report was requested by Congress, and he was delayed by other work in making the Report. It was a fairly long and detailed plan, that advocated an independent national economy with an industrial base supported by American agriculture. I'm guessing you must be suggesting adding something to the article Report on Manufactures. You're welcome to add to the article, but only if you have reliable sources for what you are adding. What you have said in the paragraph above sounds as if it may be original research, which is not permitted in Wikipedia. Linking to non-free content

If I have a hard copy of an article that is not online, can I upload it to Wikipedia as a pdf file then link to the pdf file in a reference? Or should I simply use the article citation as my reference? The article is copyrighted and non-free. I read the policy WP:NFC and I think it's allowed, but I want to be certain. Assuming that the article has in fact been published in a reliable source, it's not necessary to make it available online (verifiability doesn't require that sources be instantly available online). You can cite the source without providing a link to it. Yunshui  14:10, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

Copyright status of images created by Oklahoma State government - or alternative image of OK state senator Tom Ivester

Hi,

I'd like to use this image, linked from this page, in a wikipedia article.

But I can't work out its copyright status.

It's in a press release, here (although in a lower resolution). Press releases are by definition intended for others to use - does that make it public domain? (the low-rez version at least).

The image seems to have been created by the Oklahoma State Senate, so I thought it might be noncopyright, so I looked at Copyright status of work by the U.S. government, and it seemed like my guess was wrong, because that doesn't apply to works created by states as opposed to the federal government.

So I looked at Copyright status of work by U.S. state governments and also Oklahoma, and I'm none the wiser. I also took a look at List of U.S. state legal codes, and from that article followed this link - but it's 404 not found.

Erm, help?

I'm not an American so I'm not super-familiar with US copyright law as applied to state government.

(First I looked for existing free-use images of this individual, can't find any. Alternative images of this individual would be equally useful).

Can you explain a little more. Do you mean to create a page about a topic which is a section in an already existing article? Deleted

What constitutes an entry getting deleted? The only thing that is clear is that someone deleted my entry to the page sighting incorrect format.

What does that mean? How can I get my entry back up on the sight? I thought it was a user edit interface?

Your only edits were to dump a huge chunk of promotional garbage into the article The Voice (U.S.), which read like it was copied directly from somebody's press release, but credited no sources. It even included junk about what brand of cymbals the drummer endorses! The content added there talked about a band called 'Voice house', which has absolutely no connections with The Voice (U.S.). The content itself looked like a separate article. Jazziz995, if you were trying to create a new article, you can do so at Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Interesting, but what exactly do you need help with? Do you want to write an article about this bank? If so, you'd probably need more sources than just an obituary that doesn't mention any details about the bank. Do we already have an article on the bank that gets the name wrong? The guidelines on conflict of interest do not forbid this, but they discourage it. If you have done your best to be neutral, have referenced independent reliable sources for all the information in it, and ensured that the article establishes your father's notability, then you can post it. In the article titled Jung Myun Seok one of the statements which includes a citation is factually incorrect. Specifically it mentions that Mr Jung was a former member of the Unification church. He was never a member of the Unification church. How do we delete/fix this factual error?

Jung Myung Seok, I think. The assertion about the UC is cited to this article. I believe CNRS to be a reliable source, but the way I'm reading it, the article doesn't overtly state that Jung Myung Seok was ever a member of the UC, just that he founded a dissident sect, so it may not support the assertion. Question about citations

I am a community manager at an advertising agency, and I am currently tasked with creating a Wikipedia page for a large liquor brand. In filling out the history section of the page, it has occurred to me that most of the information we are including has come directly from a document that was provided by the brand. My question is, what would be the best way to cite this document? We have searched for more Wikipedia-friendly journal entries, newspaper articles etc, but the information is hard to come by. We have no reason to doubt the validity of the information they provided, we just want to make sure we are conforming to Wikipedia's standards. Could we host the .pdf elsewhere on the web and link to that? I've noticed several other brand pages linking to the history section of their homepage, is that acceptable?

The criterion for inclusion of information is verifiability not truth. You may not reference unpublished sources (or sources which are unreliable, such as most blogs for example). Juan Jose Sicre's grave

Juan Jose Sicre may have died in Cleveland Ohio but his grave is in the St. Joseph of Carrollton Manor cemetery in Buckeystown, MD. His head stone reads: Juan Jose Sicre, Sculptor, 1898-1974. According to a biography he moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1985. How could he have died in 1975 and then move to Cleveland?

If the biography to which you refer is a reliable source as defined by Wikipedia, then feel free to change the information in the Juan José Sicre Wikipedia article yourself, giving an inline citation, since the reference currently used by that article is not Wiki-reliable. Both spellings (Nimokoro and Nimikor) seem to occur on the internet, and the (one) reference in the article Jaiama-Nimokoro spells it Nimokoro. However, when I write " extended irreversible thermodynamics" in the search box at the top of the page , I receive invariably the same answer that this subject has not been created yet. There is no article at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Instead there is a category page at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Non-equilibrium thermodynamics, or more simply at Category:Non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Note that the presence of the colon is significant. Also there isn't a page Extended Irreversible Thermodynamics; instead you (or the IP 87.65.200.199) tried to add the text intended for that page as text inside the category page. Tyburn

The question I have is that I don't have a clue to edit an article. The issue is the entry with Tyburn. Under the notable people that were executed, one glaring entry was left out. Elizabeth Brownrigg was executed at Tyburn on 13 September 1767. There is a Wikipedia entry about Elizabeth Brownrigg and she deserves to be added to the Notables section, since she was notable enough to have her own Wikipedia entry. How do I go about correcting this glaring error? I tried, but it looked pretty messed up as I wasn't aware how to create the characters needed to add her to the list myself.

You were nearly right. I've re-added it, using the code:

Your main problem was that you omitted the '|' at the start of the line, which says it's an entry in the table. You also included part, but not all, of the <small>...</small> tags, even though there wasn't any small text to add; and you misspelled 'align'.

I gather that there is a small tempest brewing over whether "the" should be capitalized before proper nouns: Is it the Beatles or The Beatles. I think that what should be done is to follow AP style (The Associated Press), and let the nameholder decide. For example, the flag on a particular newspaper is The New York Times. However, it is the Los Angeles Times. If you've ever heard athletes referring to their particular school, they always take care to call it The Ohio State University.

my name (Douglas Wood) is listed as a writer. This is correct, but after my name, it says "disambiguation needed" and the link isn't live. If you click on some of the other writers it takes you their pages, but this doesn't happen with mine. Perhaps this is because the page can't determine which Douglas Wood I am. (I'm the Douglas Wood with "writer" next to my name.)

Can someone provide me with instructions on how to fix this?

Editing vandalism

I am a new user. I recently edited an article titled "halal". I was surprised that the change occurred instantly and without any record that I have made a change. Yes, you have. There is a record: if you go to the article and pick "History" at the top, you will see the record of your change with the time and date, your user name, and the edit comment you gave. Also by picking on the "prev" link, you can see the difference displayed between the previous version and your version.
It is true that this policy also makes vandalism very easy; but most vandalism is reverted very quickly, either by bots (programs) or by editors who patrol for it. Occasionally vandalism gets through and stays for a long time. Patrollers also revert edits which were made in good faith but are inappropriate for one reason or another. --ColinFine (talk) 15:13, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

The answer is that (unless the article has been specifically protected) there is nothing to stop anyone making an erroneous or vandalistic (or unsourced) edit, but most articles are watched by a number of editors, so if a change is made which doesn't meet Wikipedia's requirements it will usually be reverted fairly quickly. If you are reading a Wikipedia article, you oughtn't to assume that everything in it is correct. You can check the article history to see whether any changes have been made recently (and thus not had time to be reverted if wrong). Snarled up ball of similarities

I've inadvertently walked into a BIG mess and need help from a more experienced editor (and I apologize if this is not the best place to go for it, but I'm at my wit's end). There is a musician named Todd Albertson, "Todd", and a writer named Hallqvist Todd Albertson, Quist Albertson, "Quist". Quist wrote a book called The Gods of Business. Over a period of a few years, Todd's article has been back and forth between talking about the musician and the writer and currently refers to the musician. A new user is trying to create an article about Quist as Quist Albertson -- except that a lot of her references seem to refer to him as Todd. Quite a few of her references are either useless (404s) or not reliable sources (IMDB) or irrelevant (his high school alma mater). There are two more complications. One is that there are two different things titled by The Gods of Business, as you can see by the edit history of that article, and the title currently points to the book noted above. The other is that, personally, I'm not 100% convinced that Quist and/or his book are notable (the notability for the book seems to depend on sources that I am not sure are reliable) and my instinct is to take them both to AfD -- but I"m not going to do that until someone more experienced has a look at this Gordian knot. The new user is busily working away on Quist Albertson, with questionable utility but laudable enthusiasm. And I need to turn away from this for the moment and sign out. I think the talk page of Quist Albertson is the best way to understand my involvement -- can someone please help untangle this mess? OK, so Quist Albertson has now been speedily deleted by an admin on the grounds of G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion and G4: Recreation of a page that was deleted per a deletion discussion. Here's a link to the original deletion discussion; the article at that point was called "Todd Albertson", but the subject was the aforementioned Quist. Meanwhile Todd Albertson has itself been proposed for uncontroversial deletion on the grounds that the subject fails notability criteria. I can't see the former but would certainly agree with the latter; the sources do not constitute "significant coverage" and notability is not credibly demonstrated. If the prod template is removed and the article is not improved, AfD is the way to go next. - Karenjc 08:27, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

I have made changes to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario pages that reflect changes that occured well iover a year ago. The agency is no longer quasi-juridical...as that responsibility was removed from it on July 1, 2011. Also, the reporting relationship has changed..also last year. The agency now reports to the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General. I think the first thing to do is to find out why ClueBot reverted the edit - the edit summary indeed invites you to do that if you disagree. Having resolved that, there are a few minor issues worth mentioning. Firstly be careful lifting text form external websites as this may create copyright problems. Secondly Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, so really we want to see not just the current situation (arms length regulatory agency) but historical status (quasi-judicial agency) and the date and cause of the change.

How to cite a book or newspaper article as a reference

Hello! I am having difficulty claiming notability for a subject I am writing an article on simple because the reviewer claims she cannot find online references when she Googles the name ... the subject I am writing about is mentioned in books & printed materials enough to comply with the guidelines for Wikipedia's famous musicians. Specifically, could someone tell me (or show me with an exact example) of how to include a cite within an article that will reference a printed source? I have looked up the templates, but they do not tell how to include within an article. I include the information for the printed sourced in separate sections, but the reviewer declines these, stating they are not "online resources" ... THANKS! See WP:Referencing for beginners, {{Cite book}} and {{cite news}}. The documentation pages for those templates explain their use. Note that online references are not required to establish notability, offline sources are perfectly OK but you must cite them with enough detail that anyone who wants to can find the source, say in a library, and verify what it says. I know how to use the template and fill in the necessary information, I need to know to include it and insert it within my article. Where does it go? It appears that you have deleted the logo of the tambourin club viols-le-fort on its wiki page. According to me, and as the president of this very club, I don't really understand why this logo should be under some copyright law. Excuse-me for being maybe naive but we are talking about an amateur sport and I might not have all the clues about what is a wikipedia policy. Having said that everybody can find the club's logo on the club's facebook page for exemple. I would suggest not changing the title of the article, but instead having redirects from the alternative titles. You could make the citations better by using citation templates like {{cite web}}. My IP is blocked. Am I allowed to change my IP to avoid that block?

My dynamic IP is part of a range that has been blocked. (Or banned? What's the difference?) But I haven't ever done anything to be blocked for - it was someone else. So if I connect to the Internet and get an IP in the blocked range and I allowed to just reconnect to the Internet (and thus get a new IP) to avoid the block? Or is this violating some wikipedia policy? I have tried asking for an unblock. People were friendly, polite, and helpful. The software and process was frustrating. I don't know how to insert this as a link. Human Figure in Art

In the past two weeks I have jumped in to edit an article Model (art). Moving outward, I also edited the "parent" article Model (profession), and would naturally then move to "The Human Figure in Art", but find a confusing set of existing articles, none in good shape.

"Human Figure" redirects to Figure drawing which is ok, but hardly the only thing I might want to find. What about other media?

"Nudity in Art" redirects to Depictions of nudity which I find rather confusing, and posted the following on its Talk page:

It is unclear to me what this article is about, given the title and some of its content and connection to other articles. The WP definition of depiction is a technical one: the mapping of reality to a two dimensional picture plane, which generally excludes sculpture and live performance. The dictionary definition includes both rendering something as an image and in words.[3]

However the opening section and the page creation discussion below indicate that the subject is the nude in art (but not limited to the fine arts). The logical title should then be Nudity in Art, but that redirects here.
Then why is it only WPNudity rather than also WPArt?

And if it is nude in art, the ethnographic section is questionable unless vernacular art is taken to mean any photography, including those taken to record scientific facts.

The search on Figurative art is also confusing, since that article's content is mainly a gallery of fine art that has the human figure as its subject, but very little in the words, but what is there is contradictory. If the technical definition of figurative in art is connected to the meaning of figurative in literature, this is new to me. However, if figurative art means "representational but metaphorical" then why the gallery of human figures? Possible a namespace problem? Figurative Art in aesthetics, a branch of philosophy, but not in the actual practice of art? Only a few minutes on Google provides plenty of references for Figurative Art being synonymous with Human Figure in Art, which makes sense to me as an artist.

I would like to contribute to an article on the Human Figure in (Fine) Art, which does not exist by that title. If that would seem absurd given the two articles cited, I would like to know.

Can we insert an article about our company in Wikipedia?

Dear Sirs,

we just saw that in Wikipedia there is an article about The Lincoln Electric Company, leading manufacturer of welding equipment founded in 1895.

We are the company Cebora, smaller competitor of Lincoln, founded in 1954 and operating in almost 100 countries in the world, manufacturer of welding and plasma cutting equipment.

We are the leading European manufacturer of plasma cutting equipment and our plasma systems have been developed in cooperation with the University of Bologna (the oldest university in the world).

Are we entitled to add an artiocle about our company in Wikipedia or is there any rule of yours that does not allow it?

I have followed the procedures for submitting an article but apparently my page does not exist and my submitted text is shown differently to those of other contributors.

Welcome to Wikipedia! I have left you some introductory links on your talk page. The text on your user page, User:Insidivs Fvngvs, was formatting strangely because you had indented each paragraph with some leading spaces. I have removed them.
However, that text is not suitable as a Wikipedia article as it stands. editing article being created

Hello,

I'm creating my first article and having difficulty retrieving it for editing. I created a subpage under Articles for Creation, when I open the page for editing the work I have done flashes up on screen then just disappears and I'm left with a blank screen as if I have to input from scratch.

Please advise.

That sounds like a browser problem. Special:Contributions/Linda.T.Lambert shows many of your edits are blanking a page. Which browser do you have? Does it have extensions? Can you try another browser or disabling extensions? PrimeHunter (talk) 00:06, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Some of these you've blanked, others currently have content. I am trying to contribute cited information to an article (Emilio De Gogorza) and I am getting this message: Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page, but the references will not show without a {{Reflist}} template or a <references /> tag; see the help page. I tried putting in references by copying and pasting the above:,<references /> and it still won't work. Trying to help by adding cites should not be so difficult....

The <ref>s go in the text of the article where you want to refer from. You got that right on your first try. But on that try you didn't have a <references /> (or a {{reflist}} (they do the same)). In your second try you added a,<references /> but you added copies of the <ref>s after the;<references /> this caused a problem because the <references /> has to come after all the <ref>s. Someone else added a {{reflist}} in the right place; so it is almost right now. —teb728 t c 06:11, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Are you referring to the article Maan clan? You could discuss proposed improvements on the article's talk page or improve it yourself if you have reliable sources to support your edits. Technically speaking, yes, yes you can. That article is currently semi-protected to prevent vandalism, but you've been around at least a little while, so the semi-protection does not affect you.
Next question is, should you edit it? Well, if your edits might be controversial, discuss them on the talk/discussion page first. And if you're adding any new material, or changing statements of fact, be sure to include an inline citation to a reliable source that backs up what you add or change. If the image you want to use is already uploaded to Wikipedia or Commons, then replace the existing image name in the article with the exact title of the replacement image. If it isn't already uploaded then you will have to do so, making sure that you name, describe and license it correctly, before it can be used in an article. See Wikipedia:Picture tutorial and Wikipedia:Uploading images. Please note that you shouldn't change images just for the sake of it; any changes should be made in order to improve the article. If there is any potential controversy over your proposed change you should discuss it on the article's talk page first. There are numerous published sources which disagree with you.
