US County Portals[edit]

55 of 58 counties in California (not sure why 3 were not worthy of a portal)

and these were created without consideration of overlap between existing portals:

Evidently the plan was to create portals for all 3,142 counties and equivalents in the US, starting with California, with no thought to which locations warrant portals. Creating portals for them all or even a few is a bad idea. An even worse idea than portals for the 723 Indian Districts, which generally have much larger populations.

The Portal guidelines drafted by the creators of these portals say " portals should be about broad subject areas, which are likely to attract large numbers of interested readers and portal maintainers." I submit these county level portals are unlikely to attract large numbers of interested readers or maintainers." Some of the listed California counties have 20,000 people in them. Some Texas counties (not created yet) have less than 1000 people. This is indiscriminate creation of portals. Legacypac (talk) 07:03, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion for US County Portals[edit]

Delete most of them per Certes. Usually, things like counties, districts, and the like are generally too narrow of a subject to sustain a proper portal, unless the subject has some additional notability which may warrant special attention (e.g. Orange County or similar). — AfroThundr ^{(u · t · c)} 19:43, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Question - What about Orange County? What about Portal:Orange County? The need to disambiguate counties with the same name is a minor argument against the thousands of portals for counties (although there are major arguments against the same portals). If we had multiple counties called Montgomery, each meriting a portal, then we might well want a disambiguation page at Portal:Montgomery County, like we have at Portal:Georgia.
