and these were created without consideration of overlap between existing portals:

Portal:San Benito County, California (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) and
Portal:Riverside County, California (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) overlap with Portal:Inland Empire which is part of Portal:Greater Los Angeles coverage
Portal:Los Angeles County, California (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) which has heavy overlap with older Portal:Los Angeles

Evidently the plan was to create portals for all 3,142 counties and equivalents in the US, starting with California, with no thought to which locations warrant portals. Creating portals for them all or even a few is a bad idea. An even worse idea than portals for the 723 Indian Districts, which generally have much larger populations.

The Portal guidelines drafted by the creators of these portals say " portals should be about broad subject areas, which are likely to attract large numbers of interested readers and portal maintainers." I submit these county level portals are unlikely to attract large numbers of interested readers or maintainers." Some of the listed California counties have 20,000 people in them. Some Texas counties (not created yet) have less than 1000 people. This is indiscriminate creation of portals. Legacypac (talk) 07:03, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Presumably you meant Portal:San Bernardino County, California (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) as the one overlapping with Inland Empire and Greater Los Angeles? Plantdrew (talk) 20:59, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes, copy paste error. Pulling this together was a complex process that even crashed my browser due to too many windows open and twinkle edits conflicting. Legacypac (talk) 21:07, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion for US County Portals[edit]
  • Delete as too narrow in scope for a portal, after waiting for the usual week in case anyone wishes to save particular portals as exceptionally valuable. Certes (talk) 17:55, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete most of them per Certes. Usually, things like counties, districts, and the like are generally too narrow of a subject to sustain a proper portal, unless the subject has some additional notability which may warrant special attention (e.g. Orange County or similar). — AfroThundr (u · t · c) 19:43, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per the above. Beyond My Ken (talk) 20:30, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Question - What about Orange County? What about Portal:Orange County? The need to disambiguate counties with the same name is a minor argument against the thousands of portals for counties (although there are major arguments against the same portals). Robert McClenon (talk) 23:11, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all, but we need a mass-destruction mechanism, pending at WP:AN. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:11, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral - MFD isn't the right forum for mass-destruction of too many portals. This is like using a shotgun to kill brain-eating zombies. You need a nuke or a superweapon for the purpose. Robert McClenon (talk) 04:04, 4 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Some of these would not be covered by X3 as proposed as they have different creators. Legacypac (talk) 22:29, 4 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
