Everyone is cordially invited to attend a meetup in Cape Town. This will be the 20th Wikipedia meetup in Cape Town.

Wikipedia is one of the leading resources of knowledge for anyone who has access to the internet. Make an impact by helping contribute to the free encyclopedia which anyone can edit. Come join us as we assist members of the public join our editing/contributing community and answer questions about Wikipedia.

Date and location[edit]

Storefront of KA PA TÉE teahouse on Church Street, Cape Town where the 20th meetup will be happening.

This time we are meeting at a new location that is more tea friendly in a break from our otherwise coffee focused location. I have booked a table in the middle of the Cafe' for us to use so we should be unmissable or you can ask the staff for the "Wikipedia table".

Discussions[edit]

Capetonian Wikipedians discussing relevant topics

A wide range of discussions was held. Some of the topics of discussions were about:

  • Wikidata and its uses
  • Wikimania 2018 in Cape Town
  • Using the 3D modelling software Blender
  • The AfroCuration project happening on the same day in Johannesburg.
  • The problem of fake consensus such as the Konzentrationslager Warschau hoax.
  • Local content statistics - User:AlexNewArtBot#Africa is useful
  • Copyright, Copyright Amendment Bill, Commons (and efforts to lobby for SA legislative changes so that we can use government images)
  • How Wikipedia works
  • Lack of local administrators
  • Nomination of Greenman as a Wikipedia Admin. Everyone was very supportive.


It was agreed that the 21st Cape Town Meetup would take place at the same place and time on the 2 November 2019.

Attended[edit]

A total of 13 people attended the event. Some of the attendees are listed below:

Two people from Creative Commons South Africa also joined us. An invitation was sent out at the re-founding meeting for Creative Commons South Africa to their chapter members to join us as a way to help build their community and to help build links with other free knowledge movements (such as Creative Commons) in South Africa.
