Translation from Swedish - Requesting[edit]

On Google search, I find that a topic has an article in the Swedish Wikipedia but not in the English Wikipedia. Is there a tag or queue that I can use to request (human) translation into English? (I realize that stricter rules on sourcing may apply in the English Wikipedia, because the topic, which is a chemical with possible pharmaceutical properties, is subject to WP:MEDRS.) Battle and Infobox Questions[edit]

1. Is there a standard infobox for battles (in articles about battles)?

2. Is there a complete list of infoboxes showing any hierarchical (tree) structure?

3. May the general infobox for battles be used for fictional battles (if the fictional battle has an article and is otherwise considered notable)? Robert McClenon (talk) 00:00, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The simplest way to answer 1 and 3 is to check a few articles. So infobox military conflict for 1 (per Gettysburg, Trafalgar and Britain), and no for 3 (see Battle of the Pelennor Fields), which makes sense, since it would cause confusion. Clarityfiend (talk) 00:55, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Robert, hope you don't mind my piggy-backing on your question to Clarityfiend. At this draft I'm using {{Infobox military conflict}} for a bloodless coup. I'm considering {{Infobox civil conflict}} as an alternative, but that doesn't seem quite right, either. What we really need is, {{Infobox coup d'etat}}. Suggestions? (ping, please). Editnotice[edit]

I have an Edit Notice at the top of my user talk page. Can I create am Edit Notice for a project talk page? Is there anything special about a project talk page as opposed to a user talk page? Robert McClenon (talk) 00:00, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Robert McClenon: Per Wikipedia:Editnotice, All users can create editnotices for their user space, but in other namespaces only administrators and template editors can create editnotices. That page also has instructions to request one. (Also, obviously, you should probably discuss a bit with other WikiProject members before slapping a controversial edit notice on the project page.) complaint on a fake entry with my name[edit]

Hi,

there is a entry on wikipedia.org with my name (Andrea Colli, 1966). The box summarizing my data has been manipulated, and is full of stupid comments. Would it be possible to remove? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.250.247.64 (talk) 08:03, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Karl Kjer Reference Issue[edit]

Karl Kjer

Article was made up for a honer to Karl Kjer. But after a incident happened and published at Middlesex website. ref below Middle Sex Which got published on other news networks as well. It turned to a defamation. Where as Middlesex also clearly states in its bottom that "As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charge against Kjer is merely an accusation and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty."

You can check on the link. But I think admin level peoples also come against us when we tries to delete it. This is a threat which peoples still keep using against Karl here is a link I just discovered.New Post

Some peoples are working on publishing this again and again. No idea why and who. I like help and removal of this thing. As I was associated with article and had tried to remove it too.

Blueparticle (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 09:20, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Blueparticle I'm not sure what your goal here is? It appears the article you listed that Karl was actually convicted, so the information is truthful and relevant for the article. The help desk isn't a place for content disputes. If you want wording changed (as you're unlikely to get it removed) then you are best to discuss that on the articles talk page. NZFC(talk) 10:47, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) When the article Karl Kjer was created, it was about a worthy but unremarkable entomologist, with little evidence of notability. Then he got into the news when he was found guilty of a criminal offense,[1] and mention of this was added to the article, with references. My personal opinion is that neither his entomological activities nor his criminal act are enough to warrant an article about him, and it should be deleted. But if Wikipedia is to have an article on him, it should mention his main claim to notability. Maproom (talk) 10:58, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Article just recently went through AfD and was a keep as it meets notable for professors WP:NACADEMIC. So with that it appears that the conviction information warrents being added also. NZFC(talk) 11:05, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)Do you think there is any need to add a post again after one year and right after its addition on The Aggie, including it as a referance in article ? Thats just a miss use of wikipedia against someone.

IMDB.COM[edit]

I used imdb.com as a reference at Birdy (singer), but someone said it's not accepted as a reference. Is this right? I would have thought imdb was pretty authoritative on the subject of movies. Also, the other person placed a ref tag on the list of movies. I understood we didn't necessarily have to have a ref unless the info is controversial or likely to be challenged, which I don't think is the case here, especially since the info is covered in other Wiki articles. Sardaka (talk) 10:23, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Sardaka: Yes, IMDb is not regarded as reliable. Please see WP:UGC for more information. Eagleash (talk) 10:26, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Eagleash: This exchange reminds me of something that has puzzled me. Knowing that IMDb is not considered a reliable source, I wonder why Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/List of TV shows/A provides a link to IMDb for each program in the list. Anyone unfamiliar with WP policies who sees those links could easily think that IMDb is not only accepted but recommended. Eddie Blick (talk) 01:38, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Chuck Hustmyre[edit]

For a few years there was an article about me, but someone has removed or deleted it. My guess would be someone I offended or who did not like one of my books or movies. Is there a way to restore that article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.64.19.98 (talk) 13:48, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Chuck. Articles called Chuck Hustmyre have been deleted three times, by three different admins. The first time, in 2007, the text was a copyright violation. The other two times (in 2008 and 2017) the reasons given were "Doesn't indicate importance or significance of a real person" and "Does not appear to satisfy WP:BIO notability standard. No significant coverage by reliable, independent secondary sources". In other words, it did not appear that there were enough reliable, independent, published sources about you to establish that you are notable in Wikipedia's special sense of that word, and thus that it would be possible to write an acceptable article. It is unlikely that anybody's personal likes or dislikes were involved.
Since Wikipedia strongly discourages autobiography, if you want there to be an article about you (over which you will have no control whatever, by the way), I suggest you make a request at requested articles. If you can find some suitable sources (remember that they must be professionally published, and must not come from you, or your friends or associates, not even based on an interview or a press release: see IRS) and cite them, that will make the project that little bit more attractive to a volunteer who might pick it up. --ColinFine (talk) 14:12, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The explanations of the deletion of 3 versions of such an article are in the deletion log visible at Chuck Hustmyre. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:05, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How to report an email offering to promote businesses in Wikipedia?[edit]

I received an email offering paid services to promote people or businesses, seemingly by editing Wikipedia to create entries for them. This sounds like an abuse of many of the WP policies. Is there a place I should forward this email to in order for WP to take action? Thanks. Gareth.randall (talk) 14:16, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Here is a blog post on the subject [1]. However, unless the solicitation purports to be from someone associated with Wikipedia, It's not clear that any action can be taken by anyone at WMF. If the the offer contains actual false or misleading statements, you can presumably alert the BBB or the authorities in your jurisdiction that deal with false advertising. Our policies (WP:PAID) do not prohibit paid editing if it is disclosed. We do note that paying someone to edit is unlikely to be useful, a and promotional material is likely to be deleted.-Arch dude (talk) 15:19, 8 June 2018 (UTC).[reply]

  • Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. Contradicting policy[edit]

In https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Layout#NOTSEEALSO, it is remarked "The links in the "See also" section should be relevant, should reflect the links that would be present in a comprehensive article on the topic, and should be limited to a reasonable number. It is also not mandatory, as many high-quality and comprehensive articles do not have a "See also" section, although some featured articles like 1740 Batavia massacre and Mary, Queen of Scots include this section." and also remarked " As a general rule, the "See also" section should not repeat links that appear in the article's body or its navigation boxes." E.g.:- Having a "See Also" section for Departments of Gabon in Komo-Océan (department) is more valuable according to literature as a cross reference (ref: https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED401916.pdf). Either change the policy or give me clear argument about this. Shevonsilva (talk) 18:17, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Those are not policies. They are guidelines. We do (or did) try to avoid excessively prescriptive guidelines. The goal is to allow editors to use their best judgement to write useful encyclopedia articles. In the early days of Wikipedia, we encouraged the creation of stub articles, and the guidelines reflect this. For such articles, the "see also" section was a place to collect links to other articles that would eventually be mentioned inline in the article as it grew. Later, some editors began using that section name for other purposes. If you see an article that appears to be fairly complete but that still has a useful "see also" section, feel free to incorporate the links more organically into the article, or convert some or all of them into a list if that is more appropriate. -Arch dude (talk) 19:48, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Error in Akshay kumar's info page[edit]

Akshay kumar's nationality in wikipidia's page is given canadian although we all know that he is indian..please change that immediately because its too dissapointing for us to see this as he is a star of our nation.. • The Akshay kumar article lists him as a Canadian citizen and provides a reference to a reliable source. "Nationality" in this case means "citizenship". If you feel that this is in error, please provide a reliable source. You should probably do this at the article's talk page instead of here.-Arch dude (talk) 21:10, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I checked the {{infobox person}} documentation. It has a "citizenship" param. I changed the param from "nationality" to citizenship" to avoid the confusion. -Arch dude (talk) 21:54, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Linking to a non-English WP article[edit]

What is the format for linking to a non-English WP article; and, can that (or should it?) be added to the Authorlink parameter in a citation? —2606:A000:1126:4CA:0:98F2:CFF6:1782 (talk) 20:27, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • A raw interwiki link looks like this: w:es:Miguel de Cervantes. as a authorlink, it looks like this: {{cite book|first=Miguel|last=Cervantes|authorlink=w:es:Miguel de Cervantes|title=Don Quixote}}.[1] Now the hard part: should you do this? I don't know about policy or guidelines, but it doesn't feel right to me. I think it may be better to create an extremely stubby article here on the English Wikipedia with one of those big banners that says that the article should be translated from the other encyclopedia (These are listed in Category:Expand by language Wikipedia templates). You will need to copy the reliable sources over from the foreign article and make at least a one-sentence assertion of reliability to avoid article deletion. -Arch dude (talk) 21:29, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Do you need the "w."? Doesn't es:Miguel de Cervantes go to the same place as w:es:Miguel de Cervantes? — Preceding unsigned comment added by David Biddulph (talkcontribs) 21:35, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I tried that in the authorlink and it appeared to fail. Perhaps I messed up my experiment, so here it is again.[2] -Arch dude (talk) 21:39, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I recall seeing somewhere a link (presumably a template) that looks something like: Somebody, I. M.(es), where the link would go to the Spanish article for I. M. Somebody, (and the "es" lets you know that it is a link to es:wp) -- This isn't a major issue; its for the following citation, where the author is at de:Jean Marteilhe. Mostly, this might be helpful for a reader to verify that this is an actual autobiography, and not a fictional account published in 2010.

Thanks for the effort and the interlanguage link (somewhat different from my recollection). I suppose it could be done by circumventing the citation template and formatting by hand (thus),[4] but that would present a redlink in the reference. —2606:A000:1126:4CA:0:98F2:CFF6:1782 (talk) 06:41, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Article Declined[edit]

I had my draft of the article declined, but it was an edited version of the different newspaper reports which were listed in the references after the article. What should I have done differently? What do I do now? (You can tell I'm a newbie!!) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Julsm (talkcontribs) 21:40, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • I suggest you first read the box that was placed at the top of your draft. It has text that tells you what the problems are, and links to information pages on what we expect. Read those pages, then go to the help desk for articles for creation, which is also in that box. Before proceeding too far, make sure that your subject is notable as we define it (WP:NOTABLE), Otherwise, you risk doing a lot of work only to ultimately have the article deleted. No amount of referencing, and no level of elegant prose, can overcome a lack of notability. -Arch dude (talk) 22:03, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) This is about Draft:Keith Drury. Some things you could now do:
  • Read the reasons it was declined (in the grey panel within the pink "Submission declined" notice at the top of the draft), and follow the advice given there.
  • Delete the long list of "references" to material the subject has written about himself.
  • Cite the other references (the ones to independently-written articles in newspapers) within the article, instead of just presenting a list of them at the foot of the article. If you don't know how to do that, read Help:Referencing for beginners. While the article cites no references, it will certainly be rejected.

Changing page name ("moving")[edit]

I've been commissioned by Honeywell to update their TPE331 page with the correct corporate name, improve the citations and add new material with appropriate citations.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garrett_TPE331

I've already made most of the substantive changes, though there are some citations that need to be fixed or adjusted, which I figured I'd do separately.

However, I've been wandering around the Wiki Help/Talk pages for about 30 minutes now trying to figure out how to contact someone about my current project.

Here's what I want to do, in a nutshell: Change the name from Garrett TPE331 page to Honeywell TPE331. From what I've read, this means "moving" it and using the new name. However, the system says I cannot move it because the new name is already in use.

Can someone advise?

Honeywell TPE331 is currently a redirect to Garrett TPE331 (see redirect:Honeywell TPE331). You want to reverse the situation, which indeed requires a page move. That last link provides the following tip:
