Infoboxes[edit]

So, I am trying to create a new infobox type, but it seems like I can't find it out. Please help! SyndicaterUI78 (talk) 03:39, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Does Help:Designing infoboxes not help? --David Biddulph (talk) 04:07, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@David Biddulph: No, that page doesn't help at all. I;'m looking for the creation page where the infobox is invented from scratch. Also you didn't ping me. SyndicaterUI78 (talk) 17:19, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Help:Designing infoboxes#Prototyping an infobox tells you how to design an infobox in your userspace. Eagleash (talk) 17:55, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, I didn't ping you. In general it is reasonable to expect that if a person asks a question they will look in the same place for an answer, usually by including that page on their watchlist. --David Biddulph (talk) 21:03, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@SyndicaterUI78: I'm with David; It's bad enough that people leave "fire and forget" comments all over Wikipedia, which is the antithesis of discussion, but to ask a question at the help desk or anywhere else then fail to notice that you received an answer seems rather careless. Complaining that you weren't pinged is pretty rude. You should be thankful to have received a helpful answer within half an hour, even though you didn't bother to check back here for almost 38 hours. nagualdesign 00:31, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I need help deleting photos and the draft we made[edit]

thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PetraGrey (talkcontribs) 18:57, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PetraGrey. I've deleted the draft. To delete your photos, you will need to put in a request at Commons. You can ask for help here. --NeilN talk to me 19:22, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Your draft at User:PetraGrey/Petra Grey has been deleted at your request. Your contributions in Wikimedia Commons are listed at commons:Special:Contributions/PetraGrey, and they were released under an irrevocable licence (in accordance with the wording you see below the edit box every time you make a contribution), so in principle being irrevocable they can't be deleted. If you want to ask whether there is any exception under which they can be deleted, you'll need to ask at Commons, not here on the English Wikipedia which is a separate project. If you go back to the welcome message which you deleted from commons:User talk:PetraGrey, that does give some clues. --David Biddulph (talk) 19:26, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error references no text[edit]

There is something very wrong and this strange error is coming up.

Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; no text was provided for refs named auto (see the help page).

The strange thing is that this error is coming when the correct reference code is used. I have been fixing reference duplication today and normally it doesn't happen but it happened today in this edit that the error above came up even though the reference formatting is correct. Can you please point out what is wrong with this edit. It seems to be unusual that this error comes up. Pkbwcgs (talk) 19:00, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Your problem was the {{reflist}} within the infobox. See this edit to cure it. --David Biddulph (talk) 19:13, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox assistance[edit]

I am working with an altered version of Template:Infobox NBA season, and I am trying to replicate the feature that provides links to the seasons immediately proceeding and following the current one at the bottom of the infobox (See 1994-95 Golden State Warriors season for an example). I think there is something in the coding of the infobox that is not translating over, or does not register with an older season, as you can see there are no links provided, even though both the 1917-18 and 1919-20 articles exist. Here is the infobox I am using, Template:Infobox early basketball season. Hope someone can provide some help. Template syntax + wikidata question[edit]

Someone added some category to wikidata, and then set up a popular infobox to automatically display that information when it is available. The problem is, it's not especially important information (in my opinion). I want the template to by default NOT display this information (even if it's available on wikidata), with a way to override that and display the wikidata information in any particular article.

The status quo (which displays the information no matter what) looks like:

...
| label5 = [[Dimensional_analysis#Definition|Dimension]]
| data5 = {{#if:{{{dimension|}}} |{{{dimension|}}} |{{#invoke:wd|property|P4020}} }}
...

How would I edit it so that it is possible to display this wikidata information, but it is not displayed by default? --Steve (talk) 20:55, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How to delete an image[edit]

Hello,

I would like to delete an image that I created and uploaded to Wikipedia Commons because I would like to replace it with a completely different, better quality image.

Can someone please explain how to delete or nominate a file/page for deletion? I have read the instructions on the Files for Discussion page but I do not understand them.

Thanks,

CartleR255 (talk) 21:32, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the Help Desk over at Commons, which is a different project. It may be better to ask over there, as users on that project may be more familiar with the proper procedures for replacing images with better versions.--Jayron32 21:40, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A jpeg photo uploaded for M.M.Kaye now considered "orphaned"[edit]

I have a talk message from a Bot, so I cannot respond.

I properly described a photo image of M.M.Kaye from a book I own. Photo not copyrighted, taken in the 1950s, clearly for PUBLICITY. Photo of deceased person of world renown, a best-selling author. Only other image I've ever seen of M.M. Kaye is a photo on Goodreads, which happens to be a much less flattering photo. Does the publisher of M. M. Kaye have an interest in keeping its best-selling author anonymous? The idea is laughable.

The jpeg I uploaded meets your "fair use" criteria, previously published (1983) on the jacket flap of a book. But apparently, a robot will determine whether "fair use" is met -- because the image isn't already available in an article on Wikipedia????

Now I understand why so few real humans/people volunteer time and trouble to edit Wikipedia.22:05, 13 January 2018 (UTC)~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by LWilner (talkcontribs)

Two things; (1) All photographs are copyrighted by default. Unless the photographer has freely licensed their image it remains copyrighted. (2) Fair Use images need to be used somewhere or they get deleted. I suggest that you add it to the relevant article ASAP, so that it is no longer orphaned. nagualdesign 22:14, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Fair use images are only allowed on Wikipedia in exceptional circumstances, and one of the conditions of our hosting them is that they need to be in use. This is the version of the image page you would have seen when you uploaded it, and the To the uploader: Please add a detailed fair use rationale for each article the image is used in, which must also declare compliance with the other parts of the non-free content criteria, as well as the source of the work and copyright information warning was clearly present at the time. This is a legal requirement, not an arbitrary Wikipedia policy, and consequently isn't negotiable. I agree that this would be a valid illustration for M. M. Kaye, as a figure for which a free-use equivalent is unlikely to exist, but the onus is on you to decide which article(s) you want it to illustrate and to write a fair use rationale for each article in which you intend to use it. ‑ Iridescent 22:18, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)LWilner, I agree with you that copyright law is a minefield and a real pain sometimes, but Wikipedia does its best to comply with the all laws, however frustrating that sometimes is for editors. I'm sure you realise that when you buy a book, you do not buy the copyright to any of the contents or to the pictures on the flap. Please note number 9 in the list of images that fail "fair use" at WP:Non-free content#Images 2. Dbfirs 22:35, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It should also be noted that the image specifically uploaded by LWilner has been orphaned because it's been reduced in size. Even if a valid rationale is supplied for the new image, the original will soon be deleted. Chaheel Riens (talk) 22:39, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@LWilner: I've added a {{Non-free use rationale}} and removed the {{Di-orphaned fair use}} template. Please take a look at the code in the image file page for future reference. nagualdesign 23:20, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
