February 24[edit]

A slight change needed. Can you help ??[edit]

Hi there

I have trying to write the history of the Forests Commission here in Victoria, Australia

This is my first Wikipedia entry and I'm still learning

I created a page named "Forests Commission of Victoria".

Its been pointed out it should read "Forests Commission Victoria" (ie NO of).

I can't seem change it.

Can you help please

Thanks

I have moved the article to Forests Commission Victoria. It took me a while to check that this is its preferred name: most of the sources cited in the article don't mention the Commission at all. Maproom (talk) 10:22, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Publishing[edit]

How do I make my article live? It needs no references as I am Cris B. Mark. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Crisbmark1997 (talkcontribs) 09:50, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The draft will not go live. It does need references as Wikipedia is not interested in what you say about youself, but only in what is said in published reliable sources independent of the subject. Please read Wikipedia's advice against autobiography. --David Biddulph (talk) 09:57, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You should probably requst deletion of the page at your sandbox by placing {{Db-G7}} at the top of the page. Eagleash (talk) 17:26, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Beverly hills chihuahua (film series)[edit]

How do I put “this page needs work” on? because I don’t know how? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Woothero (talkcontribs) 15:26, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Further to the advice above, I have reverted your recent edits to Beverly Hills Chihuahua (film series) as they were entirely unsourced. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:36, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Page delete request[edit]

Hi, all... i procuded a redirect-site House Lemke to Lemke House and would like to have it deleted as this makes no sense. Could someone be so kind to do this? Thanks, --Gyanda (talk) 17:01, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Gyanda: If you are the sole author, you can request deletion by placing {{Db-G7}} at the top of the page. Eagleash (talk) 17:23, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Gyanda: Ignore that. As the redirect results from a page move, it should probably be retained for attribution purposes. No harm is done by its retention and redirects are cheap. Eagleash (talk) 19:14, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, okay, thanks for the info. I just thought, i had done something wrong, which would need repair. Good that all is okay :-). Kind regards, --Gyanda (talk) 21:21, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

using images from other wiki pages[edit]

I'm sure it's been asked but I couldn't find it, so I apologize ... There is an article about a Russian scholar in English ... the English version doesn't have his pic in the infobox but the Russian version does. Thought it'd be neat to post it on the English page (especially since it's a great pic of him with his cat!) but i'm pretty new so i'm not sure how... any guidance? thanks so much for y'alls time! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arqueogato (talkcontribs) 18:53, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Arqueogato. Click on the image on the Russian Wikipedia to get more information about it. If the image is hosted on Wikimedia Commons, then you are free to use it here or anywhere else. Just copy the image file name and add it to the image field in the infobox template here. If the image is hosted on the Russian Wikipedia, then things are a bit more complex, and you should ask a follow-up question with a link to the Russian article. Edit war[edit]

Re. Template:2018 Winter Olympics Calendar

When an edit war in wikipedia is ongoing (and I admit that the undo button has been used far too many times in this case), the disagreement should be hammered out in the discussion page I believe. While this is being sorted out, which version of the page should be left for viewing, the original version or the edited version? Need advice.Juve2000 (talk) 19:50, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

My advice would be to just leave it as it is and engage wholeheartedly in discussion. Arguing over which version of the article should be left for viewing while discussion in ongoing is moot, and can only detract from discussion. Really, the article should be left how it was before the edit warring began, but there's no rush to get it right and insisting that the article should remain one way or the other usually only serves to antagonise the other party. nagualdesign 21:13, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Editors to watch[edit]

Is there somewhere to post the names of disruptive editors so that their contributions can be monitored? For instance, an IP user (83.136.45.112) seems to be making a habit of disruptive editing but probably doesn't edit often enough to face sanctions. They're a good example of what I call "one to watch", but you can't add specific editor's contributions to your watchlist. I wonder if administrators do have such capabilities and where I might alert them to specific contributors. nagualdesign 22:40, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

nagual, AFAIK, the nearest I can get is to watch the problem user's talk page for warnings about disruptive behaviour Jimfbleak - talk to me? 07:04, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea. Thanks, Jim. nagualdesign 07:40, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
And I guess we all mostly do as Jim suggests, the only problem being that when there is a change to the user talk page, it is seldom the user editing the page before they start a disruption spree, it's almost always a new warning being posted by a colleague.
A tedious way to monitor contributions is to have a list with
and manually check up on them. But in my experience it isn't worth it, unless a disruptive user is on a static IP. In most other cases, the disruption will be picked up by a vandal fighter with STiki or Huggle first, or simply by another editor by way of page watching.
In the ideal world, MediaWiki would support "Add user contribs to notifications", with a possibility to mute for X hours, so we got a ping the next time say 83.136.45.112 made an edit. Looking at Notifications that's not going to happen any time soon; judging from Collaboration/Deployment planning, time and money are allocated to "urgent" matters such as Structured Discussions, the new fancy name for FLOW.
An alternative would be a User Watchlist. That was a #10 on the 2015 Community Wishlist Survey, and T2470 has not exactly been moving fast forward since then.
A local script solution is maybe the fastest way to getting what we want. And we do have User:Splarka/stalkcontribs.js. Unfortunately it has not been updated since 2009, makes use of the ancient Sajax library that was removed from MediaWiki in August 2015, and the script is not working now. Should we try and beg/bribe a code savvy person to work on an update? Sam Sailor 17:39, 27 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the in-depth reply, Sam. I'm glad I'm not the only one who wants an easier way to stalk people's contributions. I was beginning to think I was coming off as creepy. As for the last part of your post, I'm rather savvy.[No, really!] I'll take a look at the code and see what I can come up with. Cheers. nagualdesign 21:55, 27 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. If you are going to work on the script over on Testwiki, Nagualdesign, and you need someone to stalk, drop me a line on testwiki:User talk:Sam Sailor an hour or two before, and I'll drop by and do some dummy edits. Sam Sailor 23:15, 27 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm already stalking you, Sam! Last night I was parked outside your house and I'm currently aboard your boat, having a poke around. I must say, she's a fine ship. Could do with a bit of a clean though.[FBDB] (Seriously though, thanks for the offer. Will do.) nagualdesign 23:21, 27 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Outside my house?? Oh, I used to dream about living in a house! … Right, mate, cleaning utensils are in the cupboard under the nav table to port - that's "left" for a landlubber - now get on with it. And keep ya dirty dick beaters off daddy's B&G instrumentation, ey?![FBDB] (Seriously, I'd be happy to help with any script testing, especially this one.) Grammar[edit]

Hi, Sorry not exactly sure where to ask this,
I've recently added a sentence on a company director being banned however I'm not sure it's grammatically correct so I was wondering if someone could check, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 23:01, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've made some minor edits. nagualdesign 23:18, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant thanks nagualdesign much appreciated, –Davey2010Talk 23:35, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. nagualdesign 23:36, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

disturbing image[edit]

Is it allowed to upload porn images to Wikipedia? L293D () 23:20, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No. nagualdesign 23:21, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It could depend on the context; see WP:NOTCENSORED. Eagleash (talk) 23:47, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Not really. Can you imagine a context in which pornographic images would be acceptable here? Even the article about Pornography only has historical examples. See Wikipedia:Pornography for more details. nagualdesign 00:00, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Nagualdesign: I'd be careful of delivering a flat no. As Orangemike says, some people consider the images in articles like penis and breast porn. It's not as bad as it used to be, but we get the odd "think of the children!" crusader popping up. --NeilN talk to me 00:12, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
See my reply below. nagualdesign 00:14, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Depends on how you define porn, too. Lots of conservatives whine about how many sexual images are in the Wikimedia Commons, but those are not actual porn but licensed private pics uploaded by copyright holders. --Orange Mike | Talk 00:05, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There's only really one definition of porn: the portrayal of sexual subject matter for the exclusive purpose of sexual arousal. The last part is the important part, so pictures of a clitoris or penis, for example, might well be used for illustrative purposes. People certainly disagree over what constitutes profanity, but not pornography as far as I'm aware. nagualdesign 00:11, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Nagualdesign: You might be interested in reading the first thread in Talk:Human penis/Archive 2. --NeilN talk to me 00:21, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I gave it a quick once over. To be honest, I just looked at the pictures. Just to be clear, I'm no prude and my threshold of what constitutes profanity is fairly high. I can see the benefit of showing a picture of an erect penis in an article, for example. What we don't do, and I'm sure everyone agrees with this, is include salacious images for the sole purpose of sexual arousal, which is how I understood the original question. History of erotic depictions shows many would-be pornographic images of artefacts that were certainly pornographic at the time they were made – Pompeii was full of that sort of thing – but since they are used on WP for illustrative purposes they cease to be pornographic. nagualdesign 00:31, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I was referring to this edit, (I requested it to be deleted), in which a IP user added porn images. I'm not positively it was porn sure because I didn't really see the images, but the name of the image was clear. L293D () 00:55, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@L293D: It's an image hosted on Commons and used in a couple of foreign language Wikipedia articles on hentai (if you don't know what that is then I do not recommend searching about it at work or on any other public computer). --NeilN talk to me 05:47, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
