Submitting for peer review[edit]

Hi, I am a new editor on wikipedia and am trying to submit a draft for peer review. However whenever I try and add "subst:PR" on the article's talk page I get the immensely confusing error "This template should be substituted on the article talk page." Neonrights (talk) 00:09, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Neonrights: That template is for peer-reviewing articles in main space, apparently, not draft space.
I assume you're referring to Draft:Paraphrase (Computational Linguistics). That's already been submitted for reviewer review, which amounts to the same thing. All you need to do is wait. I'll give it a look right now in fact. ~Anachronist (talk) 00:28, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I just accepted it. L293D () 02:31, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Neonrights:. When next you write another draft you should use {{Subst:Submit}} inside the article not at talkpage. It will be sent for review. –Ammarpad (talk) 10:33, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I will keep that in mind for my next draft. Thanks for the help! Neonrights (talk) 19:55, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

common name of caplinski[edit]

find caplinski relatives75.186.7.42 (talk) 02:38, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This is the WIkipedia Help Desk for helping people to use Wikipedia itself. Do you have a question about doing this? If you are seeking factual information you should instead post a clear question on the Wikipedia Reference Desk, as instructed (and linked) at the top of this page.
If it helps, my cursory search suggests that the spelling "Caplinski" is rare: you might find more results with "Kaplinsky" and "Chaplinski" (or "–sky" in both cases). {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.220.212.253 (talk) 15:20, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Voting for an Article’s Deletion[edit]

Hi, thanks for fielding my question. I am contributing to an article that was nominated for deletion. Votes are being cast and I want to vote. Can you guide me to where I can learn how, or provide instructions. Thanks ev (talk) 02:41, 22 February 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ajahnbrahm1401 (talkcontribs) 02:39, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ajahnbrahm1401: The best place to probably start would be Contributing to AfD discussions let me know if you have any more questions. TheDoctorWho (talk) 02:47, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ajahnbrahm1401—Are you referring to the article titled Emma Gonzalez? I think the discussion you refer to is taking place at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Emma Gonzalez. Bus stop (talk) 02:50, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and I successfully voted to KEEP the article. I think too! Thanks to you both for your assistance. I thought I needed some sort of certification to vote. Ah, freedom! ev (talk) 03:52, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
For clarification, as explained at Contributing to AfD discussions, it is not a "vote" as such. You will sometimes see users referring to "!vote". What matters is not the "number" of responses on each side but the extent to which the arguments are based on Wikipedia policy. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:40, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • By the way, Ajahnbrahm1401... What you just wrote (I successfully voted to KEEP the article. I think you should too!) is IMO against the Wikipedia policy outlined at WP:CANVASS. In that case it is not a big deal, but keep it in mind next time you want to invite people a Wikipedia discussion in which you are involved. TigraanClick here to contact me 17:20, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Tigraan Following your same exact logic, which is pretentious and hypocritical at least, you opining on me opining is also a violation of policy. Is it your opinion that opinions do not exist on Wikipedia? Use of “IMO” doesn’t make it any better. Listen, I’ll leave it at this: I’m offended that you think you can control someone’s opinion and suppress my ability to use this site by referencing policy alone. Feel free to report me if you feel that is appropriate. I will still have opinions, and you will still have an opinion about said opinions. The purpose of AfD discussions is solely to bring them up. ev (talk) 00:13, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ajahnbrahm1401: I suspect you did not read WP:CANVASS. Tigraan is not referring to expressing your opinion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Emma Gonzalez but to asking editors on another page to vote keep. This is against WP:CANVASS which says: "When notifying other editors of discussions, ... keep the message text neutral". PrimeHunter (talk) 01:40, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
PrimeHunter why do you suspect that? And please keep your answer within policy. Respectfully, ev (talk) 01:48, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ajahnbrahm1401: I got the impression you incorrectly thought Tigraan was objecting to your opinion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Emma Gonzalez, and if you had read WP:CANVASS then it would be hard to make that misunderstanding. But maybe you actually disagree that saying "I successfully voted to KEEP the article. I think you should too!" is against WP:CANVASS. It seems clear to me that asking people to vote keep is against "keep the message text neutral". You are an inexperienced editor and not expected to know all policies and guidelines. I think Tigraan said it politely and there was no reason for your impolite reply. It can actually harm your side in a deletion debate if others in the debate discover you have canvassed, so politely pointing out that Wikipedia disallows canvassing (without alerting the others in the debate to it) is a way to help you. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:14, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: I changed it. Cogito ergo sum. ev (talk) 02:23, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

YMCA[edit]

I stand by my edit of the YMCA and so will the ACLU — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.115.145.178 (talk) 14:05, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit was usnourced and demonstrated a point of view. It therefore cannot be included in the encyclopedia. Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Eagleash (talk) 14:29, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It was worse. The edit falsified quotes from the subject to make them look bad. This is totally unacceptable for any subject no matter what you think of them. I don't think the ACLU would support it. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:09, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How do I start a page about a person[edit]

Hello,

How would I go about starting a new page about a person — Preceding unsigned comment added by Killah Threat (talkcontribs) 15:00, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Killah Threat. You should probably start by reviewing our tutorial on writing your first article, and if you feel that the individual meets our notability standards for biographies, (which usually requires sustained in-depth coverage in published sources like magazines, newspapers, and books) you can start an article using the Article Wizard and submit it for our Articles for Creation project. There it can be reviewed by an experienced volunteer who can offer feedback prior to publishing. GMGtalk 15:13, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

List of best- selling albums by year in the United States[edit]

List of best-selling albums by year in the United States (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Goodmorning the site List of best- selling albums by year in the United States of you is not correct because I miss Elvis in the list

Elvis has many records to his name. For example 165 songs in the American charts while the nr 2, James Brown, only has 107. When it comes to albums he scores another record with Elvis 30 # 1 Hits in 2002, that of the longest period between his first and his last album top rankings, namely 46 years. According to Billboard's classification system, Elvis has made the most number 1 hits and the most successful albums, making him the most successful artist of all time.

Anja Goedhart — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.201.71.207 (talk) 16:36, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Without going into it in any great detail, perhaps Elvis, despite selling huge amounts of records did not actually have the best-selling album in any one year. The article appears well-referenced. If you have reliably sourced information that states he did do so please feel free to edit the article appropriately (citing your sources... see WP:REFB) or you can propose changes on the article talk page. Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 17:02, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed; note the absence of other 60s megastars like the Beatles and the Beach Boys in that list. While Elvis was extremely successful, prior to the CD era the biggest-selling album in any given year was almost always the soundtrack to a popular Broadway show, as they had consistent sales over the entire year rather than a brief spike in the month of release. ‑ Iridescent 17:07, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Creating a page for a nonprofit[edit]

Hello,

I am trying to create a Wikipedia page for a nonprofit called Jails to Jobs. I did this before and it got deleted for copyright issues. I talked to the founder of the nonprofit and he wants to send approval/ copyright rights to Wikipedia for a few specific paragraphs that are used from this webpage and an amazon page (both created by him). He wants to sure that he is only donating those specific paragraphs, and not the whole website content and books content.

Meanwhile, I found the "Donating Copyright Material" Wikipedia page. I used the template provided (Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries) to have him send an email (from a viable, Jails to Jobs email), and I placed {{OTRS pending}} on the article's talk page. However, the Wikipedia page still got deleted and the account I used got deactivated indefinitely.

Can someone help me understand how to do this correctly? We own the information and are happy to donate specific parts of the webpage to be used on Wikipedia. We have not had luck trying to do this due to copyright issues (which I guess is good... thanks for protecting our website info, Wikipedia), but would really like to get a Wikipedia page up and running.

Help please!

Sarah — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sarahrose94 (talkcontribs)

I'd suggest rewriting it in your own words - it shouldn't take that much time and will avoid copyright issues. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.156.233.252 (talkcontribs)
Hello, Sarah. I haven't found the deletion record for the article (I don't know what it was called, or what you username was) but I would guess that there is a good chance that it wasn't deleted just for copyright issues. Even if you manage to sort those out, I struggle to think of anything from an organisation's website which would be appropriate in a Wikipedia article about it - maybe some images, but little else. I suspect that you have a very common misconception, that it is in any way appropriate for you to create a Wikipedia article about your organisation (a misconception inherent in your choice of words: "create a Wikipedia page for" rather than "create a Wikipedia article about"). If we have an article about Jails to Jobs, it will not belong to the organisation or to you, you will have no control over its content, you will be strongly discouraged from editing it, and very little of its content should come from the organisation or its associates: almost the whole article should be based on, and referenced to, what people who have no connection with the organisation have chosen to publish about it in reliable places such as major newspapers, or books from reputable publishers. Please see CORP, NPOV, PROMOTION and COI. --ColinFine (talk) 21:14, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I looked as well and can find no record of a page called “Jails to Jobs”. Beeblebrox (talk) 03:19, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Found it: Draft:Jails to Jobs. It was twice deleted as a pure copyvio, and the account blocked for violating the TOU, so actually this account is now engaging in block evasion so that’s a problem as well. Paging Yunshui in case they’d like to chime in rather than just reblocking, which in light of this could happen at any time. Beeblebrox (talk) 03:23, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The article was Draft:Jails to Jobs, which was deleted for copyright infringement both times. The blocked account is User:SarahatJailstoJobs. Sarah: I'll ping Yunshui, the deleting and blocking admin. Hopefully he can help you out. However, I also agree with the above comments - your website seems to be written mostly in the 2nd person, and in a very casual tone which would be out of place in an encyclopedia. Dairy {talk} 03:40, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, that was an edit conflict, but I lost session data so it didn't take me to the ec page. Dairy {talk} 03:46, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the ping. What we have here is an undisclosed paid editor evading a block for copyright violations and showing a distinct lack of clue; I see no reason not to block the new account and will do so after leaving this message. Jails to Jobs does not appear to meet the notability guidelines (it doesn't help that the name is fairly generic and is used by a number of programmes which appear unrelated to the subject of the draft - on a side note, the New York Jails to Jobs program instigated by Bill de Blasio may be article-worthy), and no email about the content had been sent to OTRS last time I checked (two minutes ago). Chinese govt pushing SPA[edit]

I have found an account (multiple IPs) that appear to be a WP:SPA pushing the views of the Chinese govt. He has repeatedly removed reliable and valid information on things that do not alight with the views of the Chinese govt. This does not line up with Wikipedia's core values of creating an encyclopedia and neutral point of view. How should I report him / ensure his disruptive editing doesn't harm the encyclopedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.156.233.252 (talk) 20:27, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

univ seminar assignment to edit/update a Wiki page[edit]

Our final group assignment, in a univ seminar this semester, is for students to collaborate on updating and significantly enhancing a Wiki page on a particular/recent scholar. Apart from having all of the students create an account and learn to use the editor properly, I'm wondering if there's any good advice here for ways to go about doing this--for example, we're developing our own in-house method for ensuring accuracy and editorial uniformity concerning structure/headings and content rather than just turning them all lose on the Wiki page, but sooner or later there will be a variety of editors tackling revisions to the page over the course of several weeks.Rtmccutch (talk) 20:25, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Add image to Page[edit]

Hi,

I'm the original illustrator for images used by the Gopher (protocol) development team (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gopher_(protocol)). The Gopher developers asked me to post the original GopherCon shirt image. I'd like to do that, but even though I've had my Wikipedia account for some years and have done many edits (over 10), it's telling me I'm not yet confirmed, which would let me upload the image to the page.

What's my next step? Wiki-helperella (talk) 22:22, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Wiki-helperella: Hello, although your account was apparently created in April 2014, your contributions here show that you have only made seven edits to date (in just the last week). Have you edited from another account or whilst 'logged out'? A few more edits would see you autoconfirmed or in the meantime there's WP:FFU. Eagleash (talk) 22:59, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Wiki-helperella. Are you intending to license the picture under CC-BY-SA or compatible? If so, please upload it to Wikimedia Commons, so that any Wikipedia (or other Wikimedia project) can use it. I don't believe there's an autoconfirmation requirement at Commons. If you're not planning to license it in that way, then you can upload it to Wikipedia, but only if its use meets all of the non-free content criteria. --ColinFine (talk) 23:16, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
