February 11[edit]

User pages looking like the main page[edit]

I looked at today's main page, and was interested in the photo there. When I clicked the photo, it shows all the pages that the photo is used on . I noticed a large number of user pages listed. When I clicked on these user pages, they appear to be mirring the main page. Is that allowed? Here's a few examples, but there are more than this: User:Aniket-Mayur, User:H143, and User:Uzzzwalgautam. RudolfRed (talk) 00:49, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a "problem" with that? Not trying to be snarky, really. --Malerooster (talk) 00:54, 11 February 2018 (UTC)ps Have you see User:Uzzzwalgautam's talk page? Now thats confusing! --Malerooster (talk) 00:55, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at Uzzzwalgautam's contributions I'd say they're not here to build an encyclopedia. The talk page looks like a vague attempt to push the software to breaking point. Either that or his cat was sat on the keyboard. My cat did that a few weeks ago. I left the room for a few minutes and when I came back he was lounging on my laptop. He'd even managed to change the wallpaper on my lock screen, and I don't even use the lock screen! I was dreading what he might have posted here. nagualdesign 01:29, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I thought it might run afoul of one of the WP:USER guidelines, such as no "User pages that look like project pages" or no "Content copied from mainspace". This is why I am asking. Is it allowed or not? RudolfRed (talk) 01:00, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
RudolfRed, no it's a copyright violation unless attributed Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:30, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've deleted two of the pages and reverted and revdeled the third, also removed most of the talk page junk from Uzzzwalgautam Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:44, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Jimfbleak: Thanks! RudolfRed (talk) 18:07, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WIKIPEDIA PAGE FOR CHIKKA FEDERATION OF INDIA[edit]

SIR,

I WANT TO CREATE A WIKIPEDIA PAGE FOR MY NGO CHIKKA FEDERATION OF INDIA,PL DIRECT THE STEPS AND OBLIGE. REGARDS — Preceding unsigned comment added by SANTOSHNGO (talkcontribs) 01:36, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@SANTOSHNGO: Please don't write in all capital letters, it is like shouting. Start by reading WP:YFA and the links there, particularly on notability. Also read the required disclosures at WP:COI and WP:PAID. It is strongly discouraged to write about something you are connected to, and if you are a new user creating a new article is not an easy task. Consider helping to improve Wikipedia by working on existing articles instead. If you decide to move ahead with a new article, then use the wizard at WP:YFA to create a draft that you can work on and then submit for review. RudolfRed (talk) 01:45, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Publish function key did not work for an article 2 weeks old.[edit]

Though it has been published/posted (we hit the publish button) 10-12 days ago -- then edited once or twice--we cannot get a response on the article "Joe Martin (Author, director)".

It can be called up immediately in its last edited form with Sources and footnotes, etc, upon log-on. But it cannot be accessed by "readers" apparently.

Was there a missing step on this first article? Bowie62 (talk) 02:08, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Bowie62: Please give a link to the page you refer to. Looking at your contributions, there appears to be a partially completed draft in your user space at User:Bowie62. Pages in userspace are not indexed by search engines and will only display via the search box as a user page. If this is the page you are referring to, it would need quite a bit of work before it would of an acceptable standard for the encyclopedia. The page could be moved to draftspace if necessary so you could continue to develop it. Please also clarify what you mean by 'we'. Accounts cannot be shared by more than one individual or represent an organisation. Eagleash (talk) 02:48, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Bowie62: By way of information, the 'publish' button does not necessarily publish content to the encyclopedia. Until fairly recently that button said 'save' which is a better description of what it does. You have saved the content to your user space. I would suggest that the content be moved to draftspace as content resembling an article is not really allowed in userspace and it is in danger of being deleted. Please ask if you need help with this. Eagleash (talk) 06:04, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You will also need to remove misplaced external links and include references. Please read the guidance at WP:Your first article. --David Biddulph (talk) 07:26, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Note: Welcome message and useful links were left at OP's TP. Eagleash (talk) 12:48, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

log out edits[edit]

Hi! Yesterday evening I did some edits without log into my account by chance. Is it possible to move the edits to my account list of contributions? It would be more convenient to have it there for further work on the article) Lidiia Kondratieva (talk) 09:19, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It is not possible to reassign edits but an IP address can be hidden for privacy reasons. See Wikipedia:Requests for oversight. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:14, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

One term, two different lists of links: Merge[edit]

Hello,

there is a page Muflon (Czech) and Mouflon (English). Each of them has a separate list of links to other language (11 links vs. 15). Is there a nice, easy way how to merge the two lists? I understand it's possible to move the links one-by-one, e.g. from the "Czech" list to "English" list or vice versa. But if there is something more elegant, I would choose that and I'm asking for help.

Thanks a lot!

Barbora — Preceding unsigned comment added by Goodie (talkcontribs) 12:56, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Barbora. They are attached to two different Wikidata lemmas, d:Q190294 and d:24145539 respectively. If you are satisfied that these do really cover the same thing, then you can go to either of them and pick "Merge with" (under "More"). But in situations like this it is sometimes the case that articles in some languages do not correspond properly with those in other languages - one is more inclusive than the other, or, worse, they have a significant overlap but are really different. If that is the case, you should not attempt to merge the Wikidata items, and can only use the old mechanism for interlanguage links. Please see d:Help:merge. --ColinFine (talk) 16:22, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) The Wikidata items linked in the left pane must be merged: Ovis musimon (Q24145539) and european mouflon (Q993274). Can you confirm a merge is appropriate and which one do you think has the best information, ignoring the current number of language links? I can merge Wikidata items but I'm not a biologist. It looks like co:Ovis musimon at the Corsican Wikipedia should be redirected to co:Muvra in the merge process. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:22, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Tiffany Field[edit]

I would like my birthdate (born 1942) removed from my name and the piece someone submitted about me (Tiffany Field). Thanks very much. Tiffany — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.192.176.83 (talk) 14:25, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As it was unreferenced content on a biography of a living person, I have removed it. However, there is no guarantee someone won't put it back with a reference from a reliable source. Dorsetonian (talk) 14:50, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
And with 15 seconds of searching on books.google.com, I found a reference from a reliable source that that is in fact her birthdate.. (that source appears to be used in 25 different articles as a reference and which predates wikipedia by a decade, so it isn't something that comes from us) Now what? On the one hand we have what could be a request from the person to remove it, other the other, we now have a referenceable source. Naraht (talk) 22:25, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
DorsetonianNaraht (talk) 22:44, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Per WP:BLPPRIVACY, even in the case of the subject objecting, inclusion of a properly referenced year of birth seems acceptable. Lourdes 06:25, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I too had found (presumably) the same ref, and I had initially wondered what to do about it. But it seemed entirely reasonable to simply remove the birth date as requested for the following reasons:
  • This is a help desk specifically about "how to use or edit Wikipedia". If they could have edited it, that is the edit they would have (legitimately) made.
  • The eras in which certain life events take place helps give them context and such dates remain within the article; indeed, the approximate date of birth is still easily deduced from what is there. But the exact date of birth is an irrelevance and merely trivia.
  • Given the legitimacy of the request, to do just the opposite would hardly encourage further participation from either the requester, or others who read the post.
Of course, when I said "there is no guarantee someone won't put it back", that was in anticipation of someone taking a different view. Dorsetonian (talk) 10:18, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The script is Devanagari. Assuming the language is Marathi or Hindi, Google translate produces
"Maharashtra Swabhiman Paksh
Maharashtra
Self respect
Party".
Arote rishikesh, do you have a question about editing Wikipedia? Maproom (talk) 19:45, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently about a possibly notable new party launched in India called "Maharashtra Swabhiman Paksh" (transliterated version).[1][2] Lourdes 02:57, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Any way to save drafts of content you're working on?[edit]

I just spent about an hour fleshing out an article and some sort of bug deleted all the text in the editor, and ctrl+z did nothing. Reopening the article to edit only showed the current state and all my changes were lost.

Stuff like this really dissuades me from contributing... — Preceding unsigned comment added by BaronBoehm (talkcontribs) 19:47, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

When you're working on a draft, you can save it by clicking what used to be the "Save changes" button, now labelled "Publish changes". This doesn't publish it in the sense of making it into a public article, it continues to be a draft. The decision to relabel the button was, shall we say, questionable. Maproom (talk) 19:57, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@BaronBoehm: Maproom refers to a Wikipedia:Draft. I suspect you were working on a live article and only call it a draft because you didn't consider the work to be complete. "Publish changes" on an article goes live for readers immediately. You could copy an incomplete edit to your sandbox on the "Sandbox" link at top of every page. Remove categories if you do this and note the edit is visible to people looking at your sandbox. Or you could copy it to a text editor on your own computer. I often do the latter without saving in the text editor so a computer crash could still lose it. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:17, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Incremental edits are perfectly fine. Save each change. It's easier to reverse individual changes that are no good anyway, without blowing out a bunch of work. Legacypac (talk) 20:31, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

uploading and inserting graphics[edit]

Dear colleague!

I created the section "Other quick nomograms" on the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomogram i.e. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomogram#Other_quick_nomograms but I was unable to upload and insert the three files, namely SinT-nomogram-en.gif, Nomogram-mf-en.gif, Nomogram-BR-x3-en.png, I get the message "Something went wrong" and could not repair this "something".

Despite, I succeeded in uploading similar three files to the Hungarian page https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomogram#Egy%C3%A9b_pontsoros_nomogramok i.e. https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomogram

Many thanks for your help.

@IstvanSzalkai: Inserted now. Will you give them captions? Can we find a better way to display them, rather than just plain thumbs? Sam Sailor 21:44, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Sam Sailor: Re: I succeded in including the captions. Clicking to the thumbs the large pictures appear, it is ok. However, these pictures contain Hungarian language keys, and I am unable to upload the English versions of them. Thanks Istvan IstvanSzalkai (talk) 23:17, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@IstvanSzalkai: How about making some with English text instead of Hungarian, append "-en" to the filename, upload to Commons and substitute them? Sam Sailor 23:31, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Sam Sailor: The English text and append -en is ready, uploading from my machine was unsuccesful several times ... I continue tomorrow afternoon, Istvan IstvanSzalkai (talk) 00:09, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Procedures[edit]

Hi, I need help. I do not understand your procedures. I received the following message, 9th Feb 2018.

Hello, BAYNE. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "John Bayne of Pitcairlie".In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopaedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code. If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Legacypac (talk) 10:26, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

I do not know who to contact. I think my article has in fact been accepted: See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bayne_of_Pitcairlie It may be that this message refers to my original [clumsy]attempt to submit my article for consideration. Can you refer this matter to those in charge or tell me who to contact. I would like the name ‘John Bayne of Pitcairlie WS’ to be inserted in the list of notable burials at Greyfriars Kirkyard https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greyfriars_Kirkyard and then for John Bayne’s name to be linked to his Wiki article. Many thanks Tullochbayne (talk) 21:22, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Tullochbayne: the article John Bayne of Pitcairlie has indeed been accepted as an article. I assume that the notices you quote above refer to some abandoned earlier version of it, and can safely be ignored.
I'll see to your request about the Greyfriars Kirkyard article. Maproom (talk) 21:37, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
First question. Do you have two accounts User:BAYNE (where the above message is) and User:Tullochbayne ? - X201 (talk) 21:39, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I notice that in the actual article, Bayne is referred to as Pitcairlie without any indication (for those unfamiliar with Scottish conventions) of why he might have been entitled to this designation. The old draft has now been deleted. Dbfirs 22:27, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've cleaned this up a bit. The initial text dump here was 10K without any internal or external links, and the language also reads as if it's copied from a source, but the inaccessability of the sources makes it hard to check for cv Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:56, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
