IPA help[edit]

Can someone add the IPA to Tuineau Alipate. I would but it looks complicated. It's pronounced "too-NOW allah-POT-tay" per this article. WikiOriginal-9 (talk) 00:50, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This has been resolved. WikiOriginal-9 (talk) 01:10, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Adding an Infographic[edit]

I found an infographic about the different types of flash fiction that would be good on the flash fiction page. How do I add an infographic without it messing up the current format?Shemshari (talk) 01:10, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • I assume the infographic is an image. If it is not under a restrictive copyright, then you add it by uploading it to Wikipedia commons and then adding a "file:" statement to the article: see WP:images. However, if you "found" it on some random web site somewhere, it is very likely to be copyrighted and not eligible for copying into Wikipedia commons. See: WP:IUP. If you need more help, come back here. Images are a bit difficult for technical reasons. Copyright is quite difficult for legal reasons, and we didn't make the laws. -Arch dude (talk) 16:46, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Collapsing a table[edit]

Hello, I have a table question:
At User:Ergo Sum/sandbox/Template:Ordination/color chart, I am trying to make each of the headers next to a color collapsible and collapsed by default, while the table as a whole is also collapsible and expanded by default. Does anyone know how to solve these two issues? Ergo Sum 17:23, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for image copyright help.[edit]

Hi, I'm looking for an image coyright help to have a look at File:Hans Rohrbach.jpg and put in the proper copyright template. It is licenced under Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 Germany (CC BY-SA 2.0 DE) which is located here: [1] Thanks scope_creep (talk) 06:05, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello, Scope creep. I took the liberty to reformat your post to link at the file (to link images without including them, add a starting colon).
I fail to see how your link demonstrates a CC-BY-SA license, it says "copyright: unknown", and the website itself is not under a free license. TigraanClick here to contact me 11:47, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Below it, is says Are you interested in using this image, which leads to [2], which leads to [3] The Oberwolfach Photo Collection is a famous collection mathematicians photographs. Thanks. scope_creep (talk) 13:47, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
scope_creep, that CCBYSA 2 disclaimer only appears to apply to images that are actively claimed as being owned by the MFO (Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach), whereas this image appears to be from the "archives of P. Roquette, Heidelberg" and first published by the Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik in volume 451, which would have put it as being first published in 1994. So it doesn't appear that the CCBYSA applies, and the copyright would reside with either 1) the person who took the photo, 2) the person who owns the archive, or 3) the journal who first published it. GMGtalk 13:55, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It is worth noting that the 100's of image from Ober in WP. I think in this case, the collection was gifted to the Oberwolfach Photo Collection. They are stickler for copyright. Either way I'm looking to get it fixed. scope_creep (talk) 14:01, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I mean... we have lots of images from lots of archives, but that doesn't mean we don't have to secure active explicit confirmation of the copyright status for each one of them. Pretty much every archive ever has some kind of disclaimer to the effect of "we're pretty sure everything's fair game, but don't take our word for it" and unfortunately that's not very useful for WP. GMGtalk 14:09, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So are you saying Fair Use? scope_creep (talk) 14:40, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Uhh... I dunno. It might arguably fail NFCC #1. I can't remember, but there was a big discussion a while back about non-free use of moderately recently deceased persons, and I believe the consensus was more-or-less to contact the estate, family, etc to see if a free version could "be created" i.e., if an existing image could be appropriately licensed for free use. GMGtalk 14:50, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Dude, Who is going to contact the family, I mean really. who? Find and contact a German family of mathematicans who worked in a secret government organisation, who they probably didnt know he worked there, as it is only known about 12 people across the world knew about, and information about it wasn't released until 2008 by the NSA. I'm not looking for anybody. You contact the family. Talk about utterly absurd extremes. Fair use is what it will be. scope_creep (talk) 16:04, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thaanks. scope_creep (talk) 16:22, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well no, doing something like shooting an email to the MFO isn't really that extreme, and I've contacted archives like that at least a few time myself. I'd say you usually have about a fifty fifty chance of actually getting somewhere, depending on whether you get in touch with an actual archivist or not. And anyway, it's worth a shot, since, for example, the German article on the individual doesn't have a photograph of him at all, and de.wiki can't use fair use images. At the very least, if we can figure out who originally took the image, we can verify that it more certainly meets WP:NFCI #10. GMGtalk 16:43, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, GMG yip, certainly I do send out emails and consider it quid pro quo when seeking images for WP and working on WP. It is part of the process. Sometime I go to fairly extensive measures to get images e.g the images on Discriminant Book, which are super weird stuff, that I thought would be impossible to find, and it was by chance I came across them, and then they were almost deleted, again. Right now, I'm emailing Anne van Aaken to get an image, she is a bit unsure at the moment. What peeves me off about this, is I've been through the process once before, for the Hans Rohrbach image upload, sending permissions in that weren’t right, and and it was finally deleted in August 15th. I will contact Oberwolfach on Monday. They are pretty decent, and I have used them before. scope_creep (talk) 20:37, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hocoma[edit]

Hello I recently tried to update some outdated information about the company I work at (Hocoma). Consequently, the entire page was deleted by an admin. May I request that you reestablish the page? Mark E. Kingdon[edit]

Hello,

This is for the entry for Mark E. Kingdon. When we google his name, on the right, it shows that he was born in 1942. This is incorrect. He was born in 1949. I work with him and can be reached directly to verify (or connect you to him). How can I adjust this on his actual wikipedia page? On the actual page, it does not show his DOB, but on the 'snapshot' in a google search, it does.

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by KKCAP (talkcontribs)

Hi, in the bottom right hand corner of the box on the google search there is a "feedback" link where you can report errors. This data is clearly not coming from Wikipedia. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 12:54, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@KKCAP: We don't know where Google got 1942 from (see Template:HD/GKG) but Mark E. Kingdon was actually in Category:1942 births so it could have been from us. I have removed the category as unsourced. Wikipedia requires published reliable sources so asking him or somebody who knows him is not sufficient. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:07, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Although the article does not appear to show Mark Elliot Kingdon as encyclopaedicly 'notable' there is more than enough evidence to show that with in his field of expertise he is. So in time - the article could be expanded. The immediate issue is: If we can't find a reliable third -party reference to his date of birth how can user:KKCAP, taking his first tiny steps on Wikipedia, instantly put his hands on a third party source ? The reason might be that some people often don't publicize their early life details. Not because they have something to hide but simply that they see these details as important and a private matter. As the OP is close to MEK, the best advice I can give, is to ask him if he can remember and find, any third party source that give his date of birth ( he may have P.A. or intern that can do this for him). Unless we have such verifiable information, it can not be added to the article. Period.Aspro (talk) 15:28, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Verifiability#Self-published and questionable sources as sources on themselves would allow the subject as source for an uncontroversial birth year like 1949, but it has to be published somewhere else like the subjects website before being added to Wikipedia. If it's not from a reliable source then there should be good evidence it's actually from the subject. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:40, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I am trying to link one reference in a Wikipedia article to another and keep getting an error message: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Richard_Coons&oldid=801886090. Missing or empty |title= (help)

How do I correct this link to include the title ref? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yosemite4 (talkcontribs)

  • Please sign your posts using four tildes (~~~~). Thankyou. Aspro (talk) 15:38, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Figured it out - thanks!

Also. One doesn't use Wikipedia as as source for an external link and as Robert Clunie already has a WP link in the article you don't need to-over link. Please read Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking. By becoming familiar with our guidance on linking, these little red words in citations will stop appearing. Many old and experienced editors may find it mind-boggling too at first but if I soon got the hang of it -so will you - and your half way there already. Aspro (talk) 16:03, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. you have forgotten the (~~~~) again. Aspro (talk) 16:05, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How to change title[edit]

Hey,

I have created an article here on wikipedia. But now the headline (and therefore the title) of this articel begins with this: 'Draft: Fire and Shield' I want to remove this 'draft:' from the title, so the name of the article is 'Fire and Shield'.

But I can not change the title - can someone please help me?

Hey anon. The draft at Draft:Fire and Shield currently includes no references at all, and so is probably not ready for publishing yet. Adding references to reliable sources helps to demonstrate that the subject meets our standards for notability, and allows readers to verify the content. I have added a banner for our Articles for Creation project, and when you think you are ready you can submit the draft for review by an volunteer. You may also want to consider reviewing our tutorial on writing your first article. GMGtalk 16:53, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Have you been give any official request to create this draft? Aspro (talk) 17:13, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Help needed on writing a new page[edit]

Greetings,

We just, 9/22/17, created a Wiki page; however, when type in my name: Jeffrey Richards, the many others with the same name appear, but cannot locate my page. I used Jeffrey Jon Richards and am wondering if eventually the name will appear with the other identical names.

Hey JeffreyJonRichards. What you created is a user page, which can be found at User:JeffreyJonRichards. Also please note that writing autobiographies is strongly discouraged, and creating unreferenced biographies on living persons is not allowed. GMGtalk 17:50, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi User:JeffreyJonRichards. Because the community has failed and instead of forbidding pages like the one you created, only strongly recommending people do not create them under the conflict of interest guideline, I will userfy this page to a draft in the draft namespace if you ask me to, though I have deleted it from your userpage because there it is not allowed.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 18:00, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Using group= with efn template[edit]

The Help:Footnotes article states:

  • {{efn}} supports |name= and |group=, which work the same as the parameters in <ref>. Do not enclose values in quotes.

This seems impossible since "efn" automatically uses "group=lower-alpha" (Help:Cite errors/Cite error references group mismatch#Examples says "group=note"). And I get red "Cite error" whenever I try. I assume the problem extends to {{efn-ua}} {{efn-lr}} {{efn-ur}} {{efn-lg}}.

User-duck (talk) 18:03, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi User-duck. The default for "efn" is lower-alpha, but you can still specify "group=" if you want to change it to something else. The only allowed values are note, upper-alpha, upper-roman, lower-alpha, lower-greek, lower-roman, and you have to specify the same group for {{notelist}}. The problem does not extend to {{efn-ua}}, etc. because only "efn" lets you choose a group. The others use the group that matches their name. StarryGrandma (talk) 00:38, 23 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks StarryGrandma, for the confirmation of what I suspected. Should I update the documentation? It does say "{{efn}} supports |name= and |group=, which work the same as the parameters in <ref>.User-duck (talk) 04:19, 23 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Page edits[edit]

Good Afternoon,

I would like to make several changes to the IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT (Film) Wikipedia page. The changes are simple; some spelling and grammar corrections and some character names and occupations need to be changed.

These changes come from the producer of the film, Walter Mirisch.

The reason I am posting here is because I have also been having problems editing other Wikipedia pages on behalf of Walter Mirisch. I have had trouble editing Wikipedia pages for Walter Mirisch's brother's Harold Mirisch and Marvin Mirisch. Walter Mirisch has noticed some inaccuracies on those pages. I have repeatedly tried to correct the information only to have it changed back or the request deleted.

I am a little confused on the process of editing pages because some of the editors are giving different answers. Would it help if Walter Mirisch sent a letter of some sort to approve the changes on the 3 wikipedia pages?

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you. lmassistant --Lmassistant (talk) 21:55, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No, such a letter would not help. This is the English Wikipedia, articles are developed by editors who are ideally independent of the subject. Walter Mirisch has a conflict of interest, and it appears that you do as well. We do have a way for people with a conflict of interest to contribute suggestions for article improvement: Wikipedia:Simple COI request --S Philbrick(Talk) 21:59, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You are being paid for your contributions to Wikipedia, you must declare who is paying you, who the client is, and any other relevant role or relationship. You may do this on your user page, on the talk page of affected articles, or in your edit summaries. The community expects paid editors to declare that they are being paid whenever they seek to influence an article's content; this includes when writing drafts in draft space or user space. Editors have been telling you this since 2016 and you have refused to comply. --Orange Mike | Talk 04:24, 23 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Map Editing Help[edit]

I am looking to edit this map [5] for something. I know how to edit it to fill in different countries as different colors, but I can't seem to figure out how to do the same for individual US states. Anyone know how? -AnonWikiEditor (talk) 22:25, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You could try asking at Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Map workshop. I've had a quick look at the source of the SVG file, and my impression is that it won't be easy. (If it were my responsibility, I'd make a PNG version with states easily coloured using floodfill. But there's a consensus that SVGs are always better than PNGs.)
