Can't edit as normal[edit]

Dear sir or madam,

For some reason the normal "edit" button at the top of an article, the one that makes the edit interface similar to the regular reading interface, has disappeared! I can no longer edit articles in the normal way.

Have I violated the rules in some way, and now I can't edit? or is the website itself somehow changed?

I thank you much for your help.

Most sincerely, -A user — Preceding unsigned comment added by Iohannes Grammaticus (talkcontribs) 00:11, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If you can edit this page, you can edit most articles. It sounds like the particular article you were trying to edit is protected to prevent new (or even all) editors from changing it. Ian.thomson (talk) 00:17, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't suppose this another query caused by the recent change that lets you choose the editing options? It sounds a bit as if the OP is saying the visual editor has disappeared. I.e. the tabs only show 'edit source' & not 'edit' as well. If that is the case, go to preferences, then click on 'editing' then scroll down to editing mode and select your preference from the drop-down. Eagleash (talk) 00:24, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @Iohannes Grammaticus: You didn't name an article so we cannot see whether it's protected but I have another guess: You need to change the "Editing mode" option at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:27, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

In the section "Upper-middle-class" here seems to be a funny symbol just before ref number 47 in the text. I think it is a typo. Please help. Thanks so much 101.189.0.102 (talk) 02:03, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There was a stray bracket, which I have now removed. Wikipedia is the encyclopaedia that everyone can edit; thus, if you see a problem in an article, feel free to just be bold and edit the page yourself. Cheers, Intelligentsium 02:11, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error ref no input[edit]

www.ndia.org/meetings/5720/Documents/NDIA__Final _March 2015V2.pdf This presentation by PMA-272 is cleared for open publication. In it you will see a reference to the AAR-47. It does not detect IR, it detects the signature of missiles and gun fire by using the UV energy they produce. Anything with an open flame emits UV radiation, and there are fewer sources of false alarm than in IR sensors.

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 5 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Intelligentsium, No, it's about a referencing error in the article AN/AAR-47 Missile Approach Warning System, which I've now fixed. I admit the OP hpdred didn't make it obvious. Rojomoke (talk) 05:16, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

pleased help. Refs number 41, 42 and 43 are not good at all - red lines ect. Please leave in quotes. Sorry — Preceding unsigned comment added by 101.189.0.102 (talk)

Done. I removed an "archiveurl=" parameter, as there didn't seem to be any archived content. That cleared up one of the problems. The other was a typo in the date. There was also a stray closing tag that might have been causing problems. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 03:36, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Delete my account[edit]

I want to erase all of the work I put into wikipedia.

I do not any of my contributions to be found when people search my name.

Can someone help me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnstontouch (talkcontribs) 04:48, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Your contributions have been released to a license that allows us to use them. We can't allow people to revoke their contributions as it would undermine our project. One thing that you can do is to delete your user page, User:Johnstontouch. If you want to do that, you can add {{Db-userreq}} to the top of the page. —teb728 t c 05:21, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please help. ref numbers 44 and 47 are all wrong. I am tired. Please leave in quotes and fix. So Sorry and thanks so much form an old (non-western/UK) academic (retired)101.189.0.102 (talk) 05:18, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for a maintenance template[edit]

I’m looking for an inline maintenance template, and can’t quite find one that seems appropriate. The article Wasp 58 identifies the device as a "Recoilless rocket launcher" in the infobox, and includes it in #Category:Anti-tank rockets. I suspect this to be wrong, and that this is, in fact, a recoilless gun, and not any sort of rocket launcher. I’ve added a section on the talk page, and while I’ve added template:disputed, I’m not sure that quite fits. Rwessel (talk) 07:14, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Rwessel: How about inline Template:Dubious with a link to the talk page section? {{Dubious |Recoilless gun or rocket launcher?|date=May 2016}} [dubious ] - NQ (talk) 09:22, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

About the change of an article's name[edit]

I created a page about a celebrity music composer Sagar S. But now the page shows it as Sagar S Kannada music director. KANNADA is just another language he has composed music for. He has worked in 4-5 languages. He is an Indian music director. Kannada music director being mentioned in the bracket after his name doesn't seem very right. It is now Sagar S(Kannada music director). How do I change it to just Sagar S(music director) ?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prakashlyrics (talkcontribs) 09:11, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It seems it was changed with this edit saying that there are lots of sagar music directors. However I can't see another on Wiki. Eagleash (talk) 09:34, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
What is his full name? Is Sagar his first name or his surname? We don't add disambiguators to article titles unless we have other articles about people who have the same name. As there is no other article with the title "Sagar S" this article should not have a disambiguator at all thus it should be moved to Sagar S. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 11:18, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Prakashlyrics, you need to add some in-line references to establish notability. At present, the only in-line references are to YouTube with is not a WP:reliable source. Dbfirs 07:01, 2 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of a pic[edit]

How do I delete a pic that I have uploaded on wiki (for which I am myself the copy right holder)??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prakashlyrics (talkcontribs) 09:15, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Prakashlyrics: You cannot delete it yourself but must request deletion. Which image is it? You have uploads to both the English Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons and there are different policies. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:55, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

possible web-page error, causes hang while rendering[edit]

is it just me, I wonder? this page

Æ - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia en.wikipedia.org

(i.e. ..../Æ I don't want to load it again!..)

causes my browser to hang (grey-out) for extended period while rendering, [also whole laptop slows, but that could be other cause]

(has happened twice)

? markup error or just that it doesn't like the character

I see no address for such technical errors....

I also get spammed in terminal running chromium-browser with this, which may or may not have relevance:

how to use 3rd party references[edit]

Hello, my draft, AEDP, was not accepted because of a lack of 3rd party references; that the model appears to be a "fringe theory.," because I did not include 3rd party references. I am getting confused as to how to use these references. This is what I am doing: I am referencing concepts so that the reader can verify that I have explained the concept correctly and can read more if they wish. Then, I am adding a 3rd party reference that noted that this concept is part of aedp theory. However, it's looking like the 3rd party reference could be the author of the concept. There are a few places where it works out. But overall I think I am not doing this correctly. Thank you for your helpCarrieruggieri (talk) 14:20, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Also, how is the reader to know when a reference is a 3rd party to an aedp concept or source of information used by aedp? Generally this is clear because references serve this purpose and the above. However, having to include 3rd party references, I don't know how to disambiguate the purpose of each reference.

I wonder if the problem could be solved by adding a reference list of all publications that referenced AEDP?Carrieruggieri (talk) 14:26, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Carrieruggieri. Wikipedia articles are about topics that are notable, that is, already well-known outside Wikipedia. To show that the topic of the article, AEDP, is already well-enough known to have an article you need to find sources that are 1) independent of the author of the concept and the AEDP Institute, 2) discuss AEDP itself in depth, and 3) are published in reliable sources. A long list of other references won't help. StarryGrandma (talk) 00:16, 2 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sandbox[edit]

Hi there,

I do have a sandbox which I filled with mathematical formulas I need for my work. Now I need to write a narrative for a patent application with some of the formulas that are in the sandbox. There will be much text and the formulas will be rearranged differently. How can I do it? Well, I can append the existing sandbox with any text I wish. However, I don't see any way to send it to a lawyer. I need something that has a conventional 8" 1/2 x 11" letter paper size and something I can send in an attachment. MS Word is a very poor software for math formulas. They all come out screwed up. I do have LibreOffice with Ubuntu but I am not sure it will work in official channels. Any suggestions as to what I should do? Thanks. --AboutFace 22 (talk) 15:21, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, that isn't the purpose of Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. The page is not going to format to an 8.5x11 sheet of paper since it's not meant to.
Secondly, this question would be better suited to the reference desk, at WP:RD/C. Dismas|(talk) 16:23, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've found the way out. Thanks, --AboutFace 22 (talk) 23:21, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

One method would be to print your sandbox as a PDF, but perhaps the solution you've found is better? Dbfirs 07:33, 2 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Languages of other Wikipedias[edit]

In the left column of articles there's a section called "Languages" containing a list of Wikipedia articles in other languages on the same topic. These languages are named in their own language. How do I find out the English name of one of these languages? That is, if I click one of them, how do I know (in English) what Wikipedia I've entered? Thanks in advance! Loraof (talk) 15:26, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets has the option "SidebarTranslate: display sidebar language links in English". The bottom of Main Page and its language list has a link to the Complete list of Wikipedias with both local and English names. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:33, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Correct usage of templates for website citations[edit]

Hi! I have done some edits on Wikipedia, and my sources so far have been 100% based on websites. It therefore felt natural to use the "Website name" entry in the web-citation template (not ready to write my own citation codes yet). However, a few times I have noticed that others have used the "Publisher" entry instead of "Website name". I'm wondering if I'm actually doing things wrong (gosh, I hope not!), or what the rules or preferred guidelines are around that usage. Thanks in advance for any help with this. LocalNet (talk) 17:23, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

As I understand it, if you use {{cite web|etc.}} then 'website' is the correct parameter and 'publisher' if citing a book etc. Eagleash (talk) 17:33, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi LocalNet. According to the documentation at Template:Cite web website is for the name of the site and publisher is for the company that publishes the site. If they are they same, then don't use both. StarryGrandma (talk) 00:01, 2 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Footnotes[edit]

I am adding the names and ranks of the Soviet army commanders to the Battle of Moscow order of Battle page, but cannot find any way to add a footnote # as a superscript character. Where are they hiding?

Thank you Markzym (talk) 20:15, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Markzym - you let the Mediawiki software handle the numbering and formatting for you, by putting the text of the footnote at the place in the text where the superscript number should be, between <ref> and </ref>. See Referencing for beginners. --ColinFine (talk) 20:22, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
