March 17[edit]

If Conditional[edit]

In a template, how can I make an If statement such that if a variable is equal to one phrase, it displays one thing, but if it is not equal to that, it displays another? For example, if I had a template named Sunny that said "The weather is sunny" if its weather variable is "sunny" but would say "The weather is not sunny" if the weather variable was anything else? Although this code does actually not work, this is what I envisioned the template looking like: {{#if:{{{weather}}}=sunny|The weather is sunny|The weather is not sunny}}. This code, again, does not work but it would have the same effect: if on an article page the code was {{Sunny|weather=sunny}}, it would say "The weather is sunny". However, if it said {{Sunny|weather=cloudy}}, {{Sunny|weather=rainy}}, or any other condition, it would display "The weather is not sunny". How do I do this? ThatsSoElliot (talk) 02:24, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ThatsSoElliot. See m:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions. #if tests for an empty vs non-empty parameter, while #ifeq checks for two parameters being equal. DES (talk) 02:52, 17 March 2016 (UTC
@ThatsSoElliot: The link is mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions. {{#ifeq:{{{weather}}}|sunny|The weather is sunny|The weather is not sunny}}. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:41, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"Family" pages such as the Lupton family page have their coat-of-arms at the top of the article. Could you please place the Lupton coat of arms further up at the top of the page? Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 113.61.77.57 (talk) 02:45, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hoping that someone can look at the request re the placing of a coat of arms higher up on the page on the Lupton family page - as requested earlier. Thanks

How to change or delete a wiki submission[edit]

Hi guys! I work for the ABN Group which is listed under wikipedia as the Alcock Brown-Neaves Group (the old name). How would I go about changing this? Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Robynpreston (talkcontribs) 07:04, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Done I've moved the page to ABN Group. You need an account that's at least 4 days old and has 10 edits to move a page. Joseph2302 (talk) 07:35, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a template that indicates time elapsed between two years?[edit]

Is there a Wikipedia template that indicates time elapsed between two years? So, if I input -- for example -- the years 1908 and 1924, it would return "16 years". I do not know specific dates, just years. This relates to the number of years that a politician has been in office. Specifically, this article here: Ansonia, Connecticut#Mayors of Ansonia (for the column in the chart titled "Term Length"). I looked at the various "age templates" (here: Template:Age; and here: Wikipedia:Age calculation templates), but nothing seemed quite right. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 07:19, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

sorry, accidentally edited wrong section...Panglossx (talk) 08:57, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You could use {{age2}} with {{age2|1908|||1924||sortable=yes}} to produce 15-16. If you want a single number and not an interval then you could compute it as an expression. {{#expr:1924-1908}} produces 16. Personally I would just write "16" directly in the table. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:03, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Yes, I guess all of those templates are not appropriate for this particular need. However, there is a problem with simply typing in the numbers (like "16", for example). When you sort the column, the values do not sort correctly. You get results like this when sorted: 1, 10, 100, 11, 111, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, etc. So, I think I will at the very least have to use the "nts" template. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 03:43, 18 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Could you just use template:age, and specify January 1st for the first date? Rwessel (talk) 06:30, 18 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Rwessel:Probably so. But it would give the false impression that those (January 1) dates are "real" or "actual" dates, as opposed to just being "filler / dummy" dates. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 07:52, 18 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
For a possible solution for problems with sorting numbers in tables, see {{Sort}}. Probably the links mentioned there (like Help:Sorting#Numerical sorting problems and meta:Help:Sorting#Sort modes) may be helpful. See also the whole Category:Sorting templates. --CiaPan (talk) 07:01, 18 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Panglossx: Categories are in square brackets [[Category:...]] and must match existing category names. I have made some fixes.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 09:47, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

English article link from Chinese (ZH) article "新柔长堤" wrong, but Wikidata's link is correct?[edit]

Hi!

The link to the English article from the Chinese (ZH) article "新柔长堤" (https://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-cn/新柔长堤) appears not to be correct. Instead, it is linking to "Southern Integrated Gateway" (when it should have been "Johor–Singapore Causeway"). I looked at the Wikidata page (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q892615#sitelinks-wikipedia), and the EN link there appears to be correct. So I'm a little confused why this was not reflected in the Languages sidebar. I'm new to this, so maybe I'm looking at the wrong area?

Thanks!

Hello. Your question seems to be related to one of our sister projects. Please note that you are at the English Wikipedia, one of hundreds of projects hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. Each project is operated independently of one another, including Wikipedias in other languages. This page is a help desk for asking questions related to using this wiki, so we may be unable to assist in matters concerning other Wikimedia projects. You may have more luck trying to find help at the project in question. Best of luck..
-> You should ask this question at the zh-Wiki "help desk" (linked to the left of this page under "Languages"). GermanJoe (talk) 10:24, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's caused by {{Main|:en:Southern Integrated Gateway}} in zh:新柔长堤#南部整合式闸道. It produces code including [[en:Southern Integrated Gateway]] which overrides the Wikidata entry. I don't know Chinese and don't know how the template is intended to be used but I guess it isn't like this. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:34, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Keynote SIGOS[edit]

Hi, I need to change the headline/page name of Keynote SIGOS as company has rebranded in 2015 to its original name SIGOS GmbH. How can I edit this please? Many thanks in advance — Preceding unsigned comment added by Weisssigos (talkcontribs) 10:28, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved it to SIGOS. GmbH is omitted per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (companies)#Article title. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:41, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Editing wars[edit]

Hi. I've reported editing wars by another user a few days ago and I've noticed that later reports have been addressed and mine didn't. Can anyone help me to resolve this matter?Ofir michael (talk) 11:23, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I see a few problems. First off, the report is stale – the person you reported hasn't edited Wikipedia in almost a month. Second, you included a series of permalinks instead of diffs. Diffs makes it much easier to understand what the complaint is about, as they show what changed and who changed it. Wikipedia administrators are volunteers, so the easier you make their life, the more likely they are to respond to your complaints. If your complaint is primarily about a COI, WP:COIN or WP:ANI would be a better place to go. Make sure to include diffs. You may want to read this guide. Guideline/policy for referencing sources from predatory publishers[edit]

As it just came up in a couple articles and I can't actually find anything - do we have some guideline about whether or not to make use of sources that have been published by known predatory publishers? I thought there was something along the lines of preferentially using others if there is a choice, and that this extended not only to articles but also to books; but I may be mistaken. -- Elmidae (talk) 11:36, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Awright, was pointed to Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard#Scientific_Research_Publishing. So less of a guideline than an active battlefield :p -- Elmidae (talk) 12:13, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error references no text[edit]

  1. ^ Cite error: The named reference http:.2F.2Fwww.fernsehserien.de.2Fcamp-sumpfgrund.2Ffolgen.2Fdas-kurbitanische-pupsgas-811831 was invoked but never defined (see the help page).
That's not sufficient for anyone to help you - you need to provide at least the name of the article in question.-- Elmidae (talk) 12:30, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
A search on the reference name shows it's about Camp Lakebottom. The last version before errors was [2]. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:17, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

a few articles[edit]

Hi again. These are a few articles I've been working on, some I've created, some are stubs I've picked up to expand. Just hoping people might swing past and have a look at them, to suggest any edits and help neaten up and correct the formatting etc, anything to help them conform to the standard article guidelines or whatever. I'll be watching any changes made, and it all helps me to learn how to be of more value to the community. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Cheers guys.

Panglossx (talk) 12:31, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Panglossx Thanks for inviting comments. On a quick look:
  • Alicia Scherson - could do with more prose about her recent films based on the articles referenced. Barelink refs need expanding.
  • Omen V: The Abomination - expired PROD. Didn't have any refs, apart from the books he wrote: needed refs to writings about the author not just by him.
  • Leanna Shuttleworth - "borderline notable". Refs need expanding. Doubt whether the quote in the 3rd para belongs here, but if kept it should certainly be referenced. Beware of making it look promotional.
  • Leonardo's Diary - the bare-link references need expanding, and more refs are needed (reviews and comment) to demonstrate independent coverage. The blogspot one and the two ratings websites not sufficient on their own.
  • Gifhell.com - well it got speedied (A7) so can't have had "credible indication of importance".
  • Blair Cottrell necessary topic, attracting vandals so has been put on Pending changes. It would help if all the references were expanded to show the publication name and date - not just the retrieval date.

Promising work and don't be deterred by deletion of some of your early efforts. Maybe take another look at Citing sources?: Noyster (talk), 11:17, 18 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request for a static JKLF Introductoin[edit]

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a member of JKLF (Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front), a globally recognised freedom struggle organisation working towards a free and independent state of Jammu & Kashmir. JKLF believes in a permanent solution of the UN recognised Jammu & Kashmir dispute, through peaceful trilateral dialogue among India, Pakistan and the Kashmiri leadership.

Unfortunately, on Wikipedia’s website its introduction as a ‘terrorist organisation’, is not only an unfair statement but it also undermines our struggle for a just, peaceful and prosperous South Asia.

I request you to edit the above stated unfair introduction permanently by replacing the sentence of ‘a terrorist organisation’ to a world recognised freedom struggle organisation.

Many thanks.

The best place to discuss this is at the article's talkpage. There appear to be reliable sources that refer to them as terrorists, and Wikipedia uses what reliable sources say, not how groups self-define themselves. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:26, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The article Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front does not describe them as a terrorist organisation. It says "From then [1974] until 1994 it was an active terrorist organization". Maproom (talk) 13:31, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Person of Interest Season 5 - Edit Conflict[edit]

Hello, Sir or Madam Admin. I'd like to report that two edits of mine have been continuously reverted by User:Favre1fan93 and User:Drmargi regarding the 6th and 10th episodes of Season 5. Here is the version of the page which I believe is most current; - concentrating on Season 5 - episodes 6 and 10 - here is the link to the page with this info in place, and the two references in question - the title reference for episode 6, and the title reference. (also the writer and director reference based on a twitter conversation I had with one of episode 10's writers; the episode 6 reference is based on a conversation over Twitter I had with its respective writer) https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_Person_of_Interest_episodes&oldid=710561566 They are of the very same nature of the previous title reference for episode 10, (which was also provided by myself, I should say) found in this version of the article: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_Person_of_Interest_episodes&oldid=710560276 which both users believe to be valid. If that reference is valid than so are my other two! Someone please help me. Thank you very much, Bef3481(2) (talk) 18:29, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Bef3481(2). In case of a content dispute, you need to follow the Dispute resolution procedure, which does not include trying to get round a consensus you dislike by appealing on the Help Desk, especially if you avoid linking the other parties, so that they are unlikely to see that you have posted here. (I'm not commenting at all on the merits of your case or theirs, but just talking about the procedure you should be following). --ColinFine (talk) 23:09, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
