Mohammed Zahur Khayaam

Hello,

Wiki states that the esteemed Indian composer, Mohammed Zahur Khayaam passed away on July 13, 2013 i.e. two days ago. However, I can't find any articles on internet that confirm this sad news. Could you please either confirm that this is indeed correct, or have it removed from Khayaam's page.

A wiki affiliated database that is for only certain viewers/users

Hi, I am woefully ignorant on this topic but I saw here a few weeks/months ago something about a business owner asking about a wiki affiliated site that one can limit viewers on, basically run a remote type wiki that I could limit who sees the data submitted, as well as who can edit. See the list at Comparison_of_wiki_software#Features_1. The "page access control" feature means you can restrict who can read and write in the wiki. You can dig further into each one of those to find one that suits your needs. RudolfRed (talk) 03:28, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Thanks RudolfRed, let me ask it this way since that was a lot of info, is there a wikipedia related site that counts your edits across the wikipedia platform that limits who may read those edits? Within Wikipedia itself, edits go live when they're saved. The content can't be limited to specific people, else that would defeat the point of an open encyclopaedia; if an editor changed a page, that page would be locked out forever and visible only to a few people on a list. The Wiki software, however, provides the ability to lock pages, but I don't think it can be triggered by a specific editor changing a page; you'd have to manually lock out each page. There may be a workaround for this, but I'm not too versed in that area, so I'm unsure of what to suggest.  drewmunn  talk  08:13, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

I think you are asking how you can run your own private (or partly private wiki). If you control a web-server, and are able to install software, then you can install Mediawiki (or other wiki software) and configure it how you like. If not, there are sites like Wikia, where you can create your own wiki within a public site. I don't know what kind of access controls you can put on those, though. --ColinFine (talk) 08:56, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Need to correct/update the article on Bakarkhani

Hello Wikipedia

I came across the article on Bakarkhani (Baqerkhani), a kind of bread. I find that the article does not inform correctly and has filled up the page by repeating information, which was a disappointment. Adding to that that article was not well researched and has informed about the item from one perspective only. In the later sections the article has been filled with repetitions and without any mention of the types and process of making. This Bread was brought into Indian/ Bengali cuisine via Muslim influence, which obviously has been modified according to the availability of local ingredients. These breads are mostly round, spicy, with hard crusts and almost like biscuits in texture. The bread, Bakar Khani Roti translated as Bakar Khan's Bread (where Roti is the generic name for Indian Breads),the then Governor of Bengal, in pre-independance India. It is made of flour, ghee, water, molasses with soaked saffron, poppy or nigella seeds, sugar and salt. It later baked either on a girdle or an oven. It is cooked extensively in Dacca/ Dhaka and stays fresh for a good while. They compliment the Kebab and Korma, which along with many different types of bread like Naan(leavened Bread), Roomali (Bread fine and soft as a Handkerchief), Paratha(Spiced, or filled dough fried in ghee or butter), were brought in by the Muslim rulers. There are types and additions to this basic recipe, where many different types of ingredients are added to make the bread spicier or tastier.

I cannot comment about the legend, that goes with it. The types of bread given by the author has not been elaborated upon and this article needs to be researched more.

Hi, Bigjala, thanks for bringing this to our attention, however if you have WP:RELIABLESOURCES you can choose to be WP:BOLD and offer constructive edits and additions to the article. You may also wish to start a discussion on that article's talk page on your concerns for accuracy or even the wikiprojects covering that topic to involve editors who have greater expertise on the exact issues (WikiProject India may have someone who can directly assist). The article is a mess. Some whole sections are repeated, and it uses bold-face in non-standard ways. It badly needs editing by someone familiar with Wikipedia practise. I would do it myself, but I know nothing about its subject matter. Maproom (talk) 08:06, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Reversal of text

So, I made this seemingly innocuous change ([1]), which resulted in this mess ([2]).

When a browser sees Arabic text it has to guess how much of the following text is to be displayed right-to-left. By default, digits and braces don't trigger the switch back to left-to-right, so the birth/death dates were displayed "backwards". I've added a Left-to-right mark so that the browser gets a much clearer signal. -- John of Reading (talk) 05:50, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Locally uploading files above 100 MB to English Wikipedia

How do you locally upload a file over 100 MB to the English Wikipedia? WhisperToMe (talk) 07:18, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

There was a trick around the 100MB limit that was available on the Commons. I think it involved the files being uploaded in pieces instead of being done all at once. WhisperToMe (talk) 07:29, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

I should probably look this up before replying but can you upload 100+MB files on Commons? Just going off the link you provided, there were technical hurdles that had not yet been sorted out. It doesn't mention a working method to surpass 100MB, just proposes a theoretical method. Dismas|^(talk) 08:00, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Theoretically, you could upload a file of any size (up to the limit of free space on the server), but the upload limit set on the server seems to be 100MB. This isn't something within the Wiki software necessarily, so there's not likely to be a practical workaround. Splitting the file would resolve the issue cross-limit (both server and Wiki), but reassembling it is likely to cause issues within the software, and I doubt a bit-file would stand up to scrutiny.  drewmunn  talk  08:08, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

It may be so big because of the conversion process. I converted it from WMV to OGV. The WMV was 46.9 MB but when I converted it to OGV it was 114 MB. WhisperToMe (talk) 15:44, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

I need help from someone else to make a new article

Good morning. I want to grab a little help if someone is free; I have been reading through an article on here, and one of the important people in it doesn't have an article here yet. I know a little about him but I think it needs someone with more expertise to make the article. The article would be about a Veterinary surgeon called Gathorne Robert Girdlestone, who first described and used a salvage procedure to rescue the hip joints of an animal with a damaged Femoral Head and/or Femoral Neck. All Articles on a Specific Subject

Is there a way to access a complete listing of all articles on a subject without having to "travel" from subcategory to subcategory to subcategory, only to find duplicate articles?? 150.198.1.211 (talk) 11:27, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

You could check whether there is an outline or index related to the topic. Portal:Contents/Outlines and Portal:Contents/Indexes list outlines and indexes by topic. Whether there is an index or outline depends on how broad the subject is. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 11:41, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

I am having trouble adding and citing (myself) as a donor for the roman statue of Minerva located in your article in Chester, UK. Hello, Greg. I'm not sure what you are asking. Are you saying you are the donor of something to Wikipedia? or that you were the donor of the statue to Chester? I thought you must be talking about a photo, but there isn't a photo of the shrine to Minerva (nor a mention of a statue of Minerva) in the article Chester. Or are you talking about a different article. Sorry, I think you'll have to be clearer about what you want. --ColinFine (talk) 13:18, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Request for re-review of article

Hello. I would like to respectfully request a re-review of the article:Articles for creation/Common Career Technical Core (CCTC). The person who reviewed it said it appeared to be advertisement; however, I included a number of outside sources to validate the information in the article. I also patterned the article after 2 existing Wikipedia articles: Next Generation Science Standards Common Core State Standards Since the page I created is for a set of educational standards that are now commonly recommended for Career Technical Education instructors, I used the existing Wikipedia pages about educational standards as my guide. I believe what I have created is in line with the existing pages, and I'm having trouble understanding why mine was declined as advertisement when the other two were accepted.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Request for review

Hello. About a month ago, I submitted the page Articles for creation/National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTEc) for review. I received a note from a reviewer that they were concerned that some of the content might be copied. I edited the content to alleviate any concerns with plagiarism, and I resubmitted the article for review. I've never received any response, though, and now the article shows that it is not under review at all. Any recommendations? Do I need to resubmit the article for review again?

I don't see the problem or why this was brought to the Wikipedia Help Desk. There was a minor dispute about language, which was resolved with more neutral language. Plus, you're essentially asking the Help Desk to protect your POV on the issue: "This is serious ... it seems to be people against the McCann's". I'm not even sure which edits you're offended by. On the Facebook page you seem offended by SlimVirgin's use of "false" to describe the allegations against the McCanns. But the use of "false" actually is in FAVOR of the McCanns a la "they were falsely accused". Or are you offended by the removal of "false"? I think this is a reading comprehension issue. MJB Company (Farmhouse Foods) Help

I don't understand the objection of the latest editor. Over time this article has been trimmed to it's most basic, factual statements. There is not an overarching tone of an advertisement. I want to resubmit this and for it to finally be accepted. Can you make any final suggestions (or even directly edit it) so that it is passable?

(edit conflict) Hi, I believe the answer might be buried in all the text of the rejection template. It looks to me like your draft article does not actually describe what makes your company notable for inclusion in the encyclopedia (see WP:CORP for specific guidelines). Therefore, as wikipedia is not a business directory, it may look like your article is being submitted purely to advertise the business. If you follow the guidelines I linked above and provide appropriate sources to prove notability in your article then it will have a much better chance of being accepted.
