December 15[edit]

Edit no longer works with Firefox 3.6.28[edit]

Edit has topped working with Firefox 3.6.28, which is the latest than can be used with a PPC Mac; although it does still work with Safari 4.1.3 (ditto).

In the former case, it looks as if it's going to work, but then the editable content goes completely blank.

Is this a bug that can be fixed, or is it just the March of Progress?

Paul Magnussen (talk) 01:27, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This might be better answered at the technical Village Pump. GB fan 02:27, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Some account settings may be incompatible with some browser versions. Does it work when you log out? PrimeHunter (talk) 02:37, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Irving Glickman[edit]

The article about Irving Glickman, the famous periodontist, incorrectly lists his mother's maiden name as "Burland". It should be "Gurland". I should know, as I am Irving Glickman's son. Thank you. - Alan Glickman — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.244.125.103 (talk)

The place to bring this up is on the article's talk page, Talk:Irving Glickman. The mother's name was added in February 2012 by someone using the same IP address that you used to add this request. GB fan 02:25, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) The name was added by your own IP address [1]. Was it you or another family member on the same Internet connection who may remember the name differently? And do you have a published source for either name? I couldn't find it and in order to satisfy Wikipedia:Verifiability we may have to remove the name completely. It seems unlikely to draw attention at Talk:Irving Glickman. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:35, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
By this edit,[2] IP address 67.244.125.103 added information about "Violeta Arboleta", which the New York Times spells as "Arboleda", not "Arboleta".[3] -- Jreferee (talk) 16:09, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

how to edit notable alumni[edit]

Sir, I want to add a name in Nalanda Medical College Notable Alumni--topper of 1st batch of the college. How to do it? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.26.134.34 (talk) 03:35, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The list at Nalanda_Medical_College_&_Hospital#Notable_alumni is of alumni who are notable in the sense that Wikipedia has articles about them. Is there a Wikipedia article about the person whose name you want to add to the list? Maproom (talk) 09:27, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I would like to know why on January 31, 2012, User:Cydebot moved the category Category:Wikipedians on editor review and mentioned me in the edit summary, because I don't quite recall participating in any category discussion since the time I left mid-2011. I made mention on the village pump but it seems that there's no activity or anyone who could help there. TeleComNasSprVen (talkcontribs) 03:39, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@TeleComNasSprVen: Hey TeleComNasSprVen. That is a [rather opaque] copyright attribution note. Unlike a regular page move, which preserves a page's history, a "move" of a category upon its renaming is done by creating a new category page (here it was to make the "e" in "Editor" lowercase"). So it is not that you participated in category discussion, but that you and the other users mentioned in the edit summary as "Authors:...", appear in the deleted page history of Category:Wikipedians on Editor review. (If you don't remember, at 22:42 on December 5, 2010 you had edited the page with the edit summary "added Category:Wikipedia editor review using HotCat".) Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 05:22, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah thanks. Was there any particular discussion that led to its renaming that I was ever a participant of or that I had any connection to, or was this a deletion out of process? Nevermind, this edit is what started it all (but the bot could use a clearer deletion summary in the future). User:Cyde seems to be on wikibreak though, kind of inactive, so it's hard to tell him what his bot did. TeleComNasSprVen (talkcontribs) 07:33, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Adjusting the width of tooltips?[edit]

Is there a way to adjust the width of tooltips? The particular problem that I have is with Seyfert_galaxy#Eddington_luminosity. When I hover over "note 1" at the end of the paragraph, a long, narrow note pops up.

I would like the tooltip being displayed to be fatter and shorter for desktop users. I don't own a smart phone, so I don't know how the note looks to a smartphone user. But any solution offered would have to be adaptable to the available screen width. Thanks! Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 05:25, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the formatting of tooltips is done by your browser, and the originating site (whether Wikipedia or anything else) has no power to change it. (I suspect that this will still be true even if you use Navigation popups but I'm not certain: it depends on exactly how the Javascript is coded.) You're more likely to get informed answers to this sort of question at the village pump. --ColinFine (talk) 13:26, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Flagathlete on WCC 1934[edit]

Dear Wikipedians,

I am from Germany and wanted to fix the flag in World Chess Championship 1934. Unfortunately I don't know how to use the flagathlete correctly, so I managed to fix the flag for Efim Bogoljubov from the swastika (1935-1945) to the three stripes (1933-1935), but now the link points to Germany instead of Nazi Germany. It would be nice if someone can fix this. Thank you and apologies for the issue! --Constructor 14:24, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notable veterans[edit]

Your WWII "notable" veterans list - what about the "non-notable veterans". Where is that list? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.241.104.235 (talk) 16:29, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Most Wikipedia lists of people are restricted to 'notable' people, meaning that the person has or would be qualified to have an article here on Wikipedia -- for simplicity often jsut those who already ahve an article. A list of all veterans of WWII would be huge and impossible to maintain properly, and of rather limited interest. The same factors apply to most lists of people. copy and paste[edit]

I copy bios every single day and post on my Facebook and Twitter with links to Wikipedia on each count. As of a week ago, I am not allowed to copy anything so I can paste, why? — Preceding unsigned comment added by BostonLily45 (talkcontribs) 17:13, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

BostonLily45, what exactly do you mean by "not allowed to copy"? If you are technically unable to copy-paste text then please state your browser and say whether you can paste it elsewhere, for example to a text editor on your own computer. If you refer to Wikipedia's policy then it's at Wikipedia:Reusing Wikipedia content and hasn't changed. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:21, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My sandbox article[edit]

Hello I would appreciate enlightenment on these points. Thank you, hb 1. I have an article all set for review on my Sandbox page. I can find no where how to assign it a title (Page name) and to submit it for review. The tutorial is fine until it gets to this point about which it is silent.

2. I also would like to add a disclosure re COI on the talk page for the article , but when I click "Talk" at the top of the Edit page, I only get my User Talk page which forces me to play some Starwars game, which I do not do, so I am prevented from doing anything else.

3. I went to the chat room, but my typing had no effect, so i could not communicate. I saw lots of prompts by lots of people interspersed with one or two addressed to me.

4. Earlier I had an awful time because my work would not save and I lost my work several times. I saw a help topic on that one which never really got resolved. In my case I found that the security feature ("type this word or number") had been activated (mysteriously) and that prevented me from saving. That was probably the issue for the other frustrated user. Perhaps users could be warned about that.

5 (positive note): I was able to figure out how to do the editing, references, links, etc. Hbradt (talk) 18:08, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

1. The top of User:Hbradt/sandbox has a box saying "If you are writing an article, and are ready to request its creation, click here". Click there to submit it. You don't have to assign it a page name. The reviewer will do that by moving it if it's accepted, presumably to "Paul Jay Bradt". Your own account will not be able to move pages until it is autoconfirmed in two days.
2. Use the "Talk" tab right above "User:Hbradt/sandbox", and not the "Talk" link at the very top of the page. The latter goes to your user talk page no matter where you are at Wikipedia.
4. I recommend to copy-paste complicated edits to an external program like a text editor before saving. Then you have a copy if something goes wrong and your browsers back button doesn't remember your text. When you become autoconfirmed you will not have to enter a CAPTCHA when you save external links. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:02, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I sympathise with your description of "The Wikipedia Adventure" as "some Starwars game". I am glad it was not inflicted on me when I was a new editor. Maproom (talk) 06:44, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Peter O' Toole[edit]

Peter O' Toole was in the movie PHANTOMS — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:CE19:6430:59F1:3E8C:19FD:210B (talk) 18:53, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Peter O'Toole filmography and Phantoms (film) both say so. If you are making a suggestion to a Wikipedia page then please say which one. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:05, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Donating[edit]

We noticed that your site is asking for donations at this time. We would be happy to donate, however, we have a request first. That you unlock the site about Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski and the Burzynski clinic. The page on his clinic is locked for editing, nor does it allow his FDA phase II clinical trials to be published! I don't know why this information is not allowed to be published on your site, especially since the phase II clinical trials clearly show it is the first medicine ever known to completely cure cancer. Your site states "encyclopedia articles focus on factual information to cover the thing or concept for which the article name stands". What is it? Is it big Pharm controlling your website? I am amazed that this could happen! I thank you for your help in this matter. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.195.200.207 (talk) 19:29, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, we don't accept any donations, with conditions attached to them. Arjayay (talk) 19:41, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You say that the page is locked against editing. The page appears to me to be editable. That means that the page is probably semi-protected, and so can only be edited by auto-confirmed registered users. This is a relatively common method of protection against vandalism. I suggest that you create a registered account and then get it auto-confirmed. You will then be able to discuss proposed changes on the article talk page, Talk:Burzynski Clinic, or to edit the article yourself. However, any edits that you make are likely to be reverted unless you can make a strong case that reliable sources state that the procedure completely cures cancer, as you argue. The article and the reliable sources that it cites state that the procedure is unproven and is considered fringe science. To repeat, first, you will be able to edit semi-protected pages if you create a registered auto-confirmed account. However, second, be aware that any poorly documented claims of "complete cancer cure" are likely to be reverted. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:49, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
actually, the person or employees should NOT be editing or creating an article about their company. The proper method would be to post a request at WP:RA. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 02:00, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You are assuming that the Original Poster is an employee of the clinic, which is plausible, but I had not made that assumption. They might merely be one of the group of fringe believers, which is what I assumed. You suggested the use of Requested Articles, but the article already exists, so that the proper method of introducing information by a person who has a conflict of interest is the article talk page. Retrocomputing[edit]

I have to take issue with the current state of the category Category:Retrocomputing. It includes Wikipedia articles for several computing systems that were in use from the 1970s to the 1990s, but are not in use any more. The reason for this issue is that the computing systems themselves are not "retrocomputing" - they were the cutting edge of technology when they were released, and the vendors did not think "people will fondly remember these half a century in the future", they sold them as new products. Labelling them as "retrocomputing" retcons their entire lifetime as hobbyist toys rather than actual computers, and retconning itself should be avoided. With this logic, every computer a couple of decades old becomes "retrocomputing". In my opinion, "retrocomputing" should be specifically used to mean running software for old, legacy, obsolete computing systems today (or old, legacy, obsolete software for modern computing systems today), not for the systems themselves. Where do I take this issue up for discussion? JIP | Talk 20:05, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Have you tried Category talk: Retrocomputing? Have you tried the talk pages for the specific articles listed in the category? Robert McClenon (talk) 20:48, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Post to the article talk page, Talk:OneLink Communications and provide a reliable source for the information on the acquisition. If you can provide a reliable source and do not have a conflict of interest, you can edit the article. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:54, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
