reducing image size in "single" infoboxes

Hi there. I've uploaded some images showing custom face labels for George Harrison singles, for use in article infoboxes. Because the images show only 7" single labels, not the full discs, it does seem a bit excessive to have the images appearing at full size on the page, so I've tried to reduce them to 185px. That's worked fine when the song in question was first released on an album and the label image therefore sits in a song infobox – eg, "Hari's on Tour (Express)". But if I try the same trick in an article such as "World of Stone" that contains a single infobox – that is, if I add "[[File:[name].jpg|185px]]" – disaster strikes and I get is in the morning w/index.php?title=World_of_Stone&oldid=552230713 text appearing on the image. Does anyone know what I need to do in the case of a single infobox? Many thanks! JG66 (talk) 01:13, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Looks like you fixed it - basically that infobox is coded so that you don't need the file linking code gubbins, just the file name.--ukexpat (talk) 01:33, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply, ukexpat. I think I understand your point about not needing "the file linking code gubbins", but I haven't actually fixed the issue in World of Stone. (I just removed the offending 185px bit yesterday, to avoid that extra text appearing on the page.) So what you see now in the infobox is the image still at full size, and if I write "World of Stone 1975 single face label.jpg|185px" in the infobox's cover field, there's no change at all to the image size. Any thoughts? Feel free to throw a link my way – I realise I probably need to do some research on this issue(!). Thanks again, JG66 (talk) 01:50, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

{{Infobox single}} doesn't provide any way to change the size of the image; it is always displayed at the size selected in the reader's preferences (on the "Appearance" tag tab). use of photos copied from Wikipedia

Do i have to seek permission from Wikipedia to copy photos and use in my e-book, which i would like to set up and publish in amazon kindle publishing for commercial purposes?

You can find information at Wikipedia:Reusing Wikipedia content. You should read that and come back with any questions you may have. In short, some of the pictures you find at Wikipedia can be reused, but require proper attribution and licensing as required by Wikipedia's own licenses, which are GFDL and cc-by-sa. But some other pictures are being used by Wikipedia and are not licensed for reuse (see WP:NFCC), you need to check each picture to see what terms it is being used under. References wrangling - one book, multiple refs from different pages

Hello all!
I'm currently looking at No Other Way Out. Has numerous citations from the book itself, including page numbers: (2001:3), (2001:4), (2001:8) and so on. Is there a way to elegantly tidy this up with <ref> tags? I mean so there is just the one line in the ==References== section...

I think what would be ideal here is short citations. This would tidy up the text greatly, though it would not leave one line in the references section as you refer to above, but rather provide a footnote for each page number used. See Mindomys for a working example. Though it's not quite as tidy, to use one citation in the way you envision, but still retain the page numbers, you could name the reference and then place the page numbers in the text in a much more unobtrusive way using {{rp}}, which would look like this ^[1] Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 05:54, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

How do I upload images on the reference desk

In exactly the same way that you add an image to any other Wikipedia page. First upload the file, in a suitable format, either to Wikipedia or (if it is suitable) to Commons, licensing it appropriately. See Wikipedia:Uploading images. Then use Wikimarkup to include it in your comment on the RefDesk page. Wikipedia:Picture tutorial explains how to do this. - Karenjc 08:40, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

IIRC you may not upload non-free images unless they are used in article, so it will have to be one that is suitable for upload to commons. --ColinFine (talk) 00:24, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Why was my paged deleted for Broadcasting

Why was my paged deleted for Broadcasting when a simular article called Yogscast is all about broadcasting

I dont get why you deleted my article when there is a simular style article with broadcasting called Yogscast.

Okay, this is popularity isn't a reason, might I ask why SO MANY other Youtubers have a Wikipedia Page? Or Models, Actors and the like? Models don't MAKE clothing, actors don't MAKE movies, there is no reason whatsoever, on why they have a Wikipedia page. My theory is that they pay Wikipedia to be on here, but I can't prove that. Furthermore, if MinecraftDman can't have a Wikipedia page, then why can I have a mention somewhere? Even if it is completely false? MY name has been on here for 2,5 years. With false information, no source and no description at all. It's just there, somewhere on Wikipedia, placed there as a joke, by a friend. Now that is something that shouldn't be here. And here what I wrote earlier: "This page should not be speedy deleted because... First of all, if this isn't 'important' or 'significant' then why are there actors on Wikipedia? What have they done that makes them deserve a page, even if all they have done is being featured in ONE episode of ONE show? And what about other internet 'celebrities'? Totalbiscuit has a page, Huskystarcraft and HDstarcraft hava pages, Smosh has a page, RayWilliamJohnson, Yogscast has a page, and countless more have them. Why are THEY ALLOWED to have one,and MinecraftDman not? Pretty soon (probably within a month), they'll enter the top 100 most subscribed channel on YouTube, if that doesn't warrant a page, then what does? They have arguably helped in the sales of the game Minecraft and Magicka enormously, thanks to their popularity (which is still growing, as evidenced by the fact that their subscriber count on Youtube has risen by 2,000 since yesterday). Not to mention the fact that I myself bought Magicka because I saw them having so much fun. Other then that, they do charity events at times, which by itself should also be enough of a reason. Exactly what reason do YOU (the person who tagged this for speedy deletion) have, to remove this? Cool it. I am not sure what you are asking. No one pays Wikipedia to have an article in Wikipedia. If an article is in Wikipedia, then that illustrates that some Wikipedians think that the subject of the article is notable. If there is false information, then you can correct it. If false information gets included again after you correct it, then content dispute resolution is in order. However, it isn't clear to me what you are asking or saying, other than that you appear to be angry about something. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:09, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Nope. page 'User:MinecraftDman' doesn't exist. There is no requirement whatsoever for a registered user to have a user page, though they will have a talk page. user MinecraftDman exists. AndyTheGrump (talk) 16:20, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Show/hide section

On my user page, I'm trying to make a section show/hide my barnstars, but it isn't working properly. It is showing the first one only. I successfully did this to another section (acts I've seen in concert), but the barnstars section isn't working. What is wrong with the format? {{Show}} doesn't like tables apparently. Have you considered the {{collapse top}} / {{collapse bottom}} pair?

Another person with same name as subject of article

I created an article about Carr Collins, Sr.. His father, Vinson Allen Collins (1867-1966), was a Texas Senator who should have his own article, which I am working on. In searching for open-source material, I also get genealogical information about Vinson Allen Collins (1815-1892). In checking the genealogical data, the elder person appears to be an uncle. I don't have any information to indicate that the uncle was notable. Do I need to mention him, and, if so, how?

Also, in the article about his son, I included some information about his father. Should most of that information be removed after creating the separate article on his father? Robert McClenon (talk) 16:04, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

The uncle should be mentioned if relevant. But notability isn't required to be mentioned by name in the article.

If the father has an article, it's not necessary to put his biographical info in the son's article unless it's relevant to the son. Dismas|^(talk) 18:01, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Have you tried Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer just about any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). If you fulfil the encyclopaedia's notability guidelines, someone else will eventually start an article about you. Alternatively, you can submit information and references at Wikipedia:Articles for creation and ask someone else to write the article. Wikipedia only publishes articles on subjects that have received substantial coverage in multiple independent published sources, so providing information or links to such sources will increase the likelihood of an article being successfully written. - Karenjc 19:17, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

On your biography site regarding, the band, Fitz & the Tantrums....Michael Fitzpatrick talks of Darryl Hall's house where Live at Darryl's House is recorded. He states, the house, it is at upstate New York, when it's actually in Conneticut.

A university assigned writing a Wikipedia article as a task for a graduate student

I am writing a Wikipedia article as part of a class assignment (University graduate level). The article is not yet "live". I want to post images to the article, and have permission from the holder of the copyright to do so. But when I tried to upload the images, I received an email from Wikipedia saying: this article doesn't exist!

The article (name of person) could not be found.

Please check the spelling, and make sure you enter the name of an existing article in which you will include this file.

If this is an article you are only planning to write, please write it first and upload the file afterwards.

What kind of permission do you have? If the images are freely licensed so that everybody can re-use them for any purpose, for example under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License, you can upload the images to the Wikimedia Commons via their Upload Wizard. The copyright holder may have to confirm the permission via email (example release form, to be sent to [email protected]). If that's not the kind of permission you have, Wikipedia considers the images non-free, and our non-free content criteria state that they may only be used in live articles, not in drafts - you'll have to wait with uploading until your draft has been accepted. Is the article Katherine Westphal? You've created the article on your talk page User:Sdruth270192103. You can add the images (if they're appropriately licensed as Huon describes) there, before moving it to its intended location. Rojomoke (talk) 23:16, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

I have no idea what to do with this article. There doesn't appear to be a revision in the history with any text other than templates. Should an article be written there? Should a redirect be created? Watching an article that isn't there

I would like to watch-list an article that does not exist. I requested its creation at WP:AfC. (I don't want to create the article myself because it is a request to create a biography of a member of my family whom I think was notable.) Robert McClenon (talk) 21:46, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Navigate to the red link you expect will be the article name, for example Walter H. McClenon. Then click the watch tab. It's a star in the default Vector skin. You can do the same for other potential names. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:11, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguating a film title

Thanks. It's the first movie article I'm doing, I'm also not sure how to write the section describing the narrative of the film, how detailed should it be? I have a variety of sources so I'm not forced to do a difficult paraphrase of a single source, but on the other hand combining little bits and pieces from many sources is difficult for me. Cameron Schwab

I have a massive issue with this page because that's my name too. Sure he was born before me so I guess he owns my name but I dislike sports. I like gardening and talking to my loved ones and rude friends instead of memorizing pointless statistics about overpaid princesses. This page does not represent Cameron Schwab. It should be removed or at least credit that there are two gentlemen named Cameron Schwab. I have an awesome moustache and I was born in 1986. Lol if changes are not made I might verbally bash wiki to everybody I meet...how its not a credible source for information. • The help desk is only for questions about using and editing Wikipedia. Any issues you have with a specific article should be discussed in the article's talk page. In your case, you should take your issue to the Cameron Schwab talk page. Lugia2453 (talk) 22:30, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

• Contrary to the advice above, I can see no point whatsoever in taking this issue to the article talk page. It should be self-evident to anyone that knows you that you aren't the person it refers to, and we certainly don't remove biographies on the basis that someone else shares the name - I suspect that this would apply to a large proportion of them. Nor do we add notes regarding names being shared, unless there are Wikipedia articles on individuals with the same name - and to justify an article on you it would have to be established that you met Wikipedia notability criteria.
