publication of wikipedia article edited by someone else[edit]

Recently I've noticed that an article I wrote for wikipedia on the concept of character mask has been published for private profit by Webster Digital Services, where someone called "Stuart Sloan" is cited as author/editor (http://www.amazon.com/Political-Concepts-Character-Mask-Marxism/dp/1241686726). The publisher claims that the material has been "curated from Wikipedia articles and images under Creative Commons licensing". Is this procedure legal? User: Jurriaan 16 October 2011 1:57 (UTC)

Probably. See Wikipedia:Reusing Wikipedia content. Wikipedia content, so long as it is properly attributed, can be republished, even for profit. I have no idea if the usage you cite is proper; if you have concerns you can report it to the foundation. Page Header is MISSPELLED[edit]

Hi,

I have attempted to correct a MOST DEFINITE/CERTAIN (I.E. VERIFIED/VERIFIABLE) HEADER spelling mistake in one of Wikipedia's Latin spelling of an animal & except for successful corrections in the body of page-was UNABLE to introduce correction to HEADER! Can anyone offer a solution?

Did you read the family (Hydrophiidae) and subfamily (Hydrophiinae) discussion at Hydrophiinae#Taxonomy before changing one to the other in the taxobox as a "spelling mistake"? If they are all just "Latin spelling of an animal" to you then I recommend you make talk page suggestions and don't try to change classifications by yourself. I tried to update a page but I don't know how to correctly do it.[edit]

Titles are not appearing in italics.[edit]

A page that should have a title such as The Lord of the Rings instead displays the title as <i>The Lord of the Rings</i>. Is this a template issue? Every title that should be italicized displays this way for me. Ganondorfdude11 (talk) 01:45, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like it might be a problem with StumbleUpon's browser extension. The title appears in italics for a second and then reverts as soon as the StumbleUpon logo appears next to the "see who liked this" stars. Ganondorfdude11 (talk) 01:50, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A similar report about <i>...</i> displayed around a page name was made six hours before you at #Title displays in a weird way. I have never seen such a report before. The html source for the page name of The Lord of the Rings says <h1 id="firstHeading" class="firstHeading"><i>The Lord of the Rings</i></h1>. The code <i>The Lord of the Rings</i> should display as italics in browsers: The Lord of the Rings. Maybe it is StumbleUpon's fault as you say. I have no experience with them. I am having the same issue and also have the StumbleUpon extension installed. Exactly the same thing; appears in italics for a second and then the <i></i> appear. As you perhpas know the italian Wp is completely blocked because of a protest against a proposed law witch will force Blogger or Websites to remove informations about persons with out testing wether the information is true or not. We are aware of this (see Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous)/Archive 34#Italian Wikipedia) but this page is not the place for such discussions. You might want to try Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous) but considering the vast amount of discussion that already happened I doubt this project will create its own solidarity address. User created file perhaps incorrectly tagged as non-free[edit]

File:UFL-Uniform-VA.png is marked as non-free. However it seems the file is a user created file and per WP:IUP#User-created images, images created by users must be licensed under a free license. Normally I would simply remove it from 2011 Virginia Destroyers season as a 10c violation, but in this case I feel the Non-free file tag is inappropriate. Now theoretically a user created image could be used under NFCC if it had been previously published somewhere else, but there is no indication that this is the case here. Have you tried the Computing section of Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in answering knowledge questions there; this help desk is only for questions about using Wikipedia. For your convenience, here is the link to post a question there: click here. When you do so, I think it would be a good idea to state in your question what kind of data card you are talking about—it's purpose and your need for more memory. Bug in ISO citation style in spanish[edit]

Please do not write an article about yourself. Creating an autobiography is strongly discouraged – see our guideline on writing autobiographies. If you create such an article, it may be deleted. If what you have done in life is genuinely notable and can be verified according to our policy for articles about living people, someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later (see Wikipedians with articles). That's not very helpful, Mike. The article Robert Elegant exists and was not deleted. Furthermore, there have been only two edits to the page in the last year, both minor housekeeping edits. I expect that Mr. Elegant simply failed to save the changes he attempted to make. Your advice about not writing one's own autobiography remains, relevant, however. Census-designated place . . .[edit]

Since I have not worked on articles of the type you describe I don't know whether the fact that a community is a "census-designated place" or not is worth mentioning in an article in general, but you can find out if a community carries this designation by going to this page and checking whether the place you are interested in is listed there. All 2010 U.S. Census information, including whether a community is a CDP, is derived from their database at http://factfinder2.census.gov. The problem is that they do not allow us to bookmark specific search results, so we end up having to use attribution templates like {{USCensus-2010CA}}.
Another source that is also used is this large text file, listing every single place in the country, and whether they are CDPs, cities or towns: http://www.census.gov/geo/www/gazetteer/files/Gaz_places_national.txt

WP: is an alias, and there is no alias for template space. There pseudo-namespaces such as T: for template space, but they are shortcuts that you create manually. See Wikipedia:Namespace. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 19:05, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How can I contribute ton Wikipedia?[edit]

I've tried to make corrections, or add supplements, to Wikipedia before, but Wikipedia has always defeated that goal. I always found it too difficult to use. No, more than difficult, just plain impossible. Anyway, after vowing never to try again, I'm back for one more try. My question is, how can I add to or correct an article in Wikipedia? Is there a guide? Surely, someone must have taken the time to prepare a simple 1..2..3 set of instructions. You have instructions, but they go all over the place. All I need, or can use, are simple steps. "First, you ...."

If it's not important to you exactly how the material you write at Wikipedia may be copied and reused by others and how they have to credit you for your edits then you can just ignore "By clicking the "Save Page" button...,". Wikipedia:Sandbox is a page where all users can make test edits. The name refers to Sandbox (software development). As a registered user you can also make a personal sandbox, for example at User:Rumplestilskin/Sandbox. Wikipedia has millions of articles. Some types of edits require more knowledge of the software or guidelines than others. It's impossible to write brief instructions that cover everything. Doing minor edits is also a good starting point for new editors, and much needed. Correcting spelling, grammar, etc. It only requires that you know the basics to editing already covered by the Tutorial linked above. As long as your intentions are good, you really don't have to worry about making mistakes that much. You'll learn from them as you go, and if you need help just ask here or any other experienced editor for that matter. Just make sure to do ask for help if you break something.
The only really big don'ts are: Don't violate copyright by copypasting non-free text from sources; don't advertise, spam, or promote; and don't vandalize or deliberately insert misinformation. A page on the English Language wikipedia for Philippine College of Criminology was recently created. While I can use find link to locate unlinked text that says "Philippine College of Criminology" does anyone have any suggestions for finding places where an inline interwiki to the page on the Tagalog Language Wikipedia has been used so that it can be changed over to the page on the English Language wikipedia?Naraht (talk) 20:41, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As I understand it, you want to locate pages in English Wikipedia which contain a link to tl:Philippine College of Criminology, so that you can remove the :tl: part of the link. Correct?
