I didn´t find more information about a book, but I don´t want the deletion of the article[edit]

Hi. I´m user of wikipedia recently, and I was writting a article about the spanish book "Relatos desde el Umbral". The book exists, in fact i bought the book in Spain. You writted at first a Proposed deletion of my article because there is not many information about the book in internet, but this is the reason because I was writting the article. I just find information about it in some blogs and in some book stores. Can you give me a solution to don´t delete this article? I hope that you don´t delete the article. Best regards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DarkMan66 (talkcontribs) 02:14, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, welcome. I'm sorry, but that book might not be acceptable; please see WP:NBOOK. Blogs and book-shops are not enough.
You could perhaps add more evidence of notability. You can discuss it in Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Relatos_desde_el_Umbral, where it will be debated for at least seven days.  Chzz  ►  02:18, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have had the same problems too, but you should tell Wikipedia on the article's talk page and tell them you aren't ready for your article to be deleted. They might still delete your article, but you can always create it again, once you have more information about it. CPGirlAJ (talk) 19:01, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Need to Change Username or Immediately Delete current Wikipedia and start over[edit]

Hi,

I need to change my username for security purposes. This set up is so complicated with much verbiage, multiple direction and it is all so unclear to how I should proceed. I appreciate your help!

Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple. - David Biddulph (talk) 02:55, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You don't have to delete current Wikipedia and start over, but if it is for security purposes, then you can but all the edits and articles you have created will be all deleted and you won't have credit for it anymore. If you just want to change your username, then all you have to do is visit the article Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple or you can go to your username homepage and change your username from there. CPGirlAJ (talk) 18:58, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure, CPGirlAJ? Could you please provide a link to where it says that "all the edits and articles you have created will be all deleted"? Also, could you please explain how a user can change their user name at their user page? On trying to move a user page you will get a very clear warning: "Warning: You are about to move a user page. Please note that only the page will be moved and the user will not be renamed." - David Biddulph (talk) 19:25, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Stray question[edit]

Dear Mr. Asad (MP),

This is regarding my personal issue and family matter. I need your help badly or else no one except Allah can help me. Well i myself M.A.Rahman (hiding personal identity) until case is solved. I am one of the residents of Chandrayangutta and previously used to live in Azampura under Malakpet constituency. I am married to Muzaffar Hussain' last sister resident of Kurmaguda and contestant for councillor seat from Kurmaguda in the year 2010 against the opposition of Saadhu Yadav and badly defeated by him.

I need your moral help as they are trying to separate my wife and children and even they have not shown my children since my son is nearly 3 years. I am helpless as i am living in Saudi arabia and they also told me that they will cut me into pieces if i try to meet my son. I need your attention immediately to bring my son into my life as he is the only son to me and i am middle class person who has many dreams for my son. His future is in danger due to silly and stupid reasons and i dont think that there is any connection of my son with these things.

I need your urgent reply to send you the whole story.

Thanks and best regards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.99.29.36 (talk) 03:00, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. --Orange Mike | Talk 03:22, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Please read: A personal appeal from Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales[edit]

collapsed rant
The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.

So Wikipedia does not advertise? Or do they only advertise there own personal appeals? How could they possibly beg the world for more contributions then they already have given? For Jimmy Wales to sit up on his high horse while so many have created his website for him... I just can't fathom how this is anything less than cyber begging. Take your website down, it's not even worth a college citation or even high school for that matter since it's not credible. That and you put your face on information, like it is yours. If the whole idea was to create a community to provide free information with the world, than why is it that you need to be paid? What did you do besides create a glorified forum, from which thousands and thousands made for you. You have free labor. You have one of the most popular websites. You control information. You keep your staff small and you not only ask the world for help, but you need it's money as well. You may as well began talking about monetizing your visitors, which you only have due to the hard of others. Did I mention all of that hard work was free for you. Oh wait, that's exactly what you are doing with your personal appeals.

So I get it now.

Does Wikipedia use advertising banners as a source of revenue contrary to what the personal appeal states? Yes, Wikipedia does.

How? Through personal appeals on every single article.

But wait Jimmy Wales says this isn't like those for-profit companies, who use point and click banners to gain profits? Yes, but you just clicked a banner, didn't you?

Yes I did, but how does that gain revenue for Wikipedia? Well unlike a point a click banner, where lets say a penny is earned per click. Just for instance. They link you to a tearjerker of an article, where they ask you to give them money. You even have a record of your 'contributions' top contributor.

Isn't Jimmy Wales the top contributor? Well he should be shouldn't he. It is 'his' website after all.

Well maybe he did most of the work? Well he should have, but no. It was all of you. In fact this website is based off of free labor.

Good luck figure out the rest. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jay eM aitcH (talkcontribs) 04:36, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with an image[edit]

I have a problem with the image BSicon_uxgKRZo.svg. I changed it on Commons at 21:29 on 8 Nov 2011, because the colours were wrong. It is a canal icon for canal mapping, and now has a vertical blue canal crossing a horizontal green one.   (uxgKRZo) It can be seen on Template:Waterways_legend#Bridges and tunnels on the fifth line of the Bridges and tunnels section. It appears there in its original form, with a green vertical and blue horizontal. When I click on it, it shows in its correct colours, but not when I add it to canal route diagrams. Following advice, I have tried bypassing my cache, and clearing the cache completely, but on three pcs that I have tried, it is always wrong. Any suggestions what I need to do? Thanks. Bob1960evens (talk) 10:45, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It looks identical to me on this page as it does at User:Bob1960evens/Sandbox2. Green on the left and right, blue going over it from top to bottom. It might be your computer, it might be Common, which sometimes just has issues (recent thumbnail generator errors attest to this). I'm one of the more well versed people on files, and I've seen a lot of weird stuff with them, so my best advice is this: wait a week. If it still does in a week, then you have a problem. If its fixed in a week, something was off somewhere and it flushed itself out. Waiting solves a surprising number of problems. If waiting fails, have an admin (they're the only ones that can do this) upload the correct version locally on top of the commons version. (i.e. at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:BSicon_uxgKRZo.svg, instead of commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BSicon_uxgKRZo.svg). If neither of them help, go to the IRC and find a developer. Sorry man. Request to add new section for the 'Mehdi Hasan' entry[edit]

Sorry to clog up the helpdesk but I'm not sure how else to go about it

I've added a request to add in a 'Publications' section to Mehdi Hasan's entry with the information. It has been acknowledged but advised not to include the Amazon links. I've since amended the entry without the links, so can this now by added please?

The entry can just include the information of the publications without any links, or for the first book it can include the link to the publishers website http://www.bitebackpublishing.com/books/ED/ and for the second book the publishers website is http://www.randomhouse.co.uk/editions/summer-of-unrest-the-debt-delusion-exposing-ten-tory-myths-about-debts-deficits-and-spending-cuts/9781446483855. On her facebook photo, the tracklist for her new album "Talk That Talk" (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150354929736676&set=a.10150354929561676.340836.10092511675&type=3&theater) it listed the song "Saxon"... but on the Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk_That_Talk#Track_listing) it didn't list the song!

I've checked Rihanna's twitter, fans were asking about the song "Saxon" weather its gonna be on the album... She comfirmed that it would be in the deluxe album! (DELUXE!!!!! RT @DaRealAyumYum: @rihanna Excuse me!!! where is the saxon/Redlipstick?!!! https://twitter.com/#!/rihanna [confirmed on her twitter page])

So! Can you please add the song "Saxon" to the deluxe edition list on her track listing page!

Making two columns[edit]

In Otium, about half way down, is a 4 line poem in Latin by Catullus. The English translation is directly below. I was thinking to put the English version directly to the right of the Latin version and then they would be side-by-side next to Catullus's picture. Can someone do this for me? Also, if its not too much to ask, can these two versions be centered on the page? There will be some white space then on each side. On the other(laptop) it only offers a selection of what I have previously searched. So far I haven't been able to find any setting to change to get the full dropdown to appear on the laptop. RE: Please read: A personal appeal from an author of 549 Wikipedia articles[edit]

Collapsing rant again. Take this to WP:VPM, inappropriate for Help Desk

I wonder... Why collapse my original post, requesting no modification. This is something worth discussion, is it not. And if Wikipedia is everything that it is suppose to be than my user comment will be left alone. Or directed to the appropriate place.

Here is another:

Again this will probably be collapsed as a rant as my previous one has been.

Tiny little donations support Wikipedia? There is an option to donate on a monthly basis. Options go up to $250 and other. These donations are not small because if a million people read the personal appeals and donate a dollar a piece. Well, that is a million dollars. I think donations are well beyond that with fewer people.

For discussion purposes:

I think Wikipedia should just post relevant ads to make money. Forget requesting donations, make it from other corporations. People work hard for their money. Very hard, something which would probably be incomprehensible to some. Close my account, if it must be done. How many read this section, but it is worth discussion.

The couple hundred servers and small staff do not take millions and millions to operate.

I think asking for a donation, on every single wiki page through the use of advertisement banners, is going too far. I think it is greedy. I think that Wikipedia should take them down. I think Wikipedia should switch to advertising or some other source of income, not to create a for profit company, but to pay Wikipedia contributors for every single contribution that is credible. And the personal appeals from the authors, are they by an chance employed by Wikipeida?

Please I open this conversation for discussion I am curious as to what others think, is Wikipedia not interested?

Thanks for collapsing my article calling it a rant. Really not worth user discussion? Perhaps a response and I will be proving wrong. Perhaps that will help you. Perhaps I am not the only person that thinks this way.

So Wikipedia does not advertise? Or do they only advertise there own personal appeals? How could they possibly beg the world for more contributions then they already have given? So many have created this website for who... I just can't fathom how this is anything less than cyber begging. Wikipedia is not even worth a college citation or even high school for that matter since it is not credible. Is information yours? What is Wikipedia besides a glorified forum, from which thousands and thousands made. May as well began talking about monetizing Wikipedia visitors, which you only have due to the hard work of others.

They link you to a tearjerker of an article, where they ask you to give them money. You even have a record of your 'contributions' top contributor. This is how IRC looks like (This is Mibbit)
#wikipedia-en-help connect will take you to the English Wikipedia Help channel. Clicking connect will use Webchat, but you can also use web-based IRC clients like Mibbit or Chatzilla. It functions pretty much like any other Instant Messaging application you're familiar with. There's a blank line at the bottom where you can type new messages. Messages by you and other people appear on top of it. See picture provided at the right.
It may take a while to get answers as not everyone on that channel is active at all times (and like everyone here, they're also volunteers). You can type !helper to "ping" whichever helper is currently active.-- Obsidin Soul 19:39, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Permission to Use Photo, But Requires Logo to Remain on Photo[edit]

Hi, A photographer has given me permission to upload his photo to wikipedia, but is requesting that his logo stays in the corner of the photo. Is this permitted by wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Goldaqua (talkcontribs) 19:31, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. I can't find anything directly answering the question. I guess it would depend on the prominence of the logo: if it is discreet, I think there will be no problem, but if it is large and conspicuous this might be regarded as promotional. The other issue to be aware of is that "giving you permission to upload" is not sufficient: the copyright holder must agree to license the image under one of the licences acceptable to Wikipedia (in particular a licence that allows commercial use). Please see WP:Donating copyright materials. --ColinFine (talk) 22:17, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In general, no, we don't allow uploads of images which require the display of a compulsory watermark or copyright statement. The shortcut to the appropriate part of the image use policy is WP:WATERMARK.
As well, you should probably make sure that your friend or colleague understands what uploading an image to Wikipedia means in terms of its licensing. We only allow copyright owners to upload images under free licenses which permit copying, reuse, and modification of the images, for both non-commercial and commercial use, as long as the creators of the image are properly credited. (See Wikipedia:Image use policy#Copyright and licensing for the policy.) We cannot accept media that are uploaded 'for Wikipedia use only' or under similar restrictions. Jefferson College has never been protected against editing. You should see an "Edit" tab at top of the page. Do you see a "View source" tab instead? If so then try clicking it anyway. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:42, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Has any headway been made at fixing this? I've seen it a lot the past few months and it's kind of a pernicious bug where people who want to edit an unprotected page are stopped from editing by a false display.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:22, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You refer to bugzilla:27978. I don't know whether this bug was lcwk's problem. lcwk has not edited for 3 years and could have forgotten to click the "Edit" tab to edit the lead section which has no section edit link to the right. At User talk:PrimeHunter#bugzilla 27978 I wrote: "Do you have a recent example of a page name affected by the bug?
