WikiGolf[edit]

Hi Guys,- just wondering why you don't have various sites like WikiGolf....would be great if there was one site that had endless info on golf!!!??? Just a thought :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.120.16.131 (talk) 00:31, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. This is a help desk on Wikipedia, for questions on Wikipedia. WikiGolf, unfortuneately, does not exist, however, Wikipedia does have a golf portal, which does contain loads of golf information. Additionally, please remember to sign all of your comments with four tildes (~~~~), placed at the end of your comment. Thank you! A person who has been editing Wikipedia since Thursday, October 28, 2010. 00:42, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is nothing to prevent anybody from setting up a wiki about golf, using MediaWiki or other software; but it would have nothing to do with Wikipedia. --Orange Mike | Talk 00:53, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is already a wiki about golf at Wikia. See this link. Dismas|(talk) 01:36, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wikia has a lot of tiny wikis. It says "We are currently editing over 69 articles". http://golf.wikia.com/index.php?title=Special:RecentChanges&days=30 says the latest edit was June 29. Wikipedia has far more content and activity. Category:WikiProject Golf articles shows there are currently 6287 Wikipedia pages tagged by the project. Deleted page not showing in deletion log[edit]

I linked to The Dream Team (warez) from my own wiki on 2010-04-05, so I know that page existed then. However it appears to have since been deleted, but looking at the deletion log I can't see why! The last entry in the log is from 2006, but as the page was active in 2010 I don't understand why it seems to have been deleted with no record of that action. Am I missing something? Thanks! -- Malvineous (talk) 04:26, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Weird, it must be a "glitch in the Matrix." I have administrator access here, so I can see the deleted article; it had been edited up to about a month ago, when it was nominated for deletion, see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Dream Team (warez) (2nd nomination), and subsequently deleted on June 24, 2011. However, as you rightly note, the deletion log does NOT indicate this deletion. Not sure why the database has dropped this information; you may want to ask at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) where people who know about this stuff tend to hang out. I am as confused as you are. --Jayron32 04:48, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I also checked the deletion logs for User:Cirt, the administrator who deleted the page. You can see here where he clearly deletes the talk pages and redirects associated with the page in question, but the actual deletion of the page doesn't show up in his logs either. I am as perplexed as you as to why this doesn't show up in the logs. WP:VPT may have an answer... --Jayron32 04:53, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's a known issue. See for example Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 34#Deletion log missing and bugzilla:12129. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:58, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Delete a site but on a page that copies from wikipedia[edit]

So this site, az-encyclpedia derives its content from wikipedia. This page was once a wikipedia page http://www.az-encyclopedia.info/m/1628673_Mo_Zhou/ but then it was deleted. I was wondering how I can delete the page on the az-encyclopedia site too. Any help would be much appreciated! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.165.95.70 (talk) 05:55, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You're going to have to contact the administrators of that particular site. Wikipedia has no control over them or what they do on their site. --Jayron32 06:00, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Difficulty editing Wikipedia articles[edit]

I have been an editor of Wikipedia on and off for about four years. However, in the past months I have been having trouble. When I do not log in I can edit just fine using any of my browsers (IE, Mozilla, Google Chrome). However, once I sign in and click Edit on any page I get one of a couple things happen. Sometimes my page will open up dozens of empty tabs too fast for me to click out. Other times I get a download box asking me to open a file. I do not what the problem is but I do believe it has nothing to do with any of my browsers because the problem is the same for all three of them. ~~TopGUN71691 — Preceding unsigned comment added by TopGUN71691 (talkcontribs) 06:17, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Weird. Have you tried updating your browsers, plugins, and add-ons? Other than that, I think the best place for this would be in Wikipedia:Village pump (technical), where there are people that can answer technical problems.
Can you also tell us what the popup tells you to download? You could be infected with malware. A virus and spyware scan might be prudent as well, just in case.-- Obsidin Soul 07:50, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Can you try another computer? Is "Use external editor by default" enabled at Special:Preferences#preftab-3? It should be disabled unless you know how it works. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:10, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Image query[edit]

File:Indycar2005SanMarino.jpg (on Commons) and File:Jacques Villeneuve 2005 San Marino.jpg (on enwp) are the same image. However, the filename and description on Commons are inaccurate (it's a Formula One car not an Indycar). The filename and description on enwp are correct. The two files also have different licensing (cc-by-2.0 on Commons and cc-by-3.0 on enwp). I want to achieve an outcome where the file on Commons has the correct filename and description and there's no file on enwp (there's no point having the same image in both places, is there?). But I'm not sure of the best way to achieve this. Should I:

  • correct the description of the Commons file, get the Commons file renamed and then delete the enwp file as a duplicate?
  • get the enwp file (which already has the correct filename and description) transferred to Commons and then delete the original Commons file as a duplicate?
  • something else?

Thanks. DH85868993 (talk) 08:46, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Commons file (File:Indycar2005SanMarino.jpg) has more accurate source and attribution and is used in an article. I'd suggest the first choice. Retaining the Commons version, transferring the description and whatever can be salvaged from the enwp file then deleting that one as a duplicate.-- Obsidin Soul 13:05, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Watchlist notice while using secure server[edit]

Copying the same thing I asked JamesBWatson

Hi, I'm not really sure who to approach regarding this, but in my Watchlist, I see a notice regarding some IRC discussion (not sure if it'll show up on your watchlist). In that, there's a link to Tipu's Tiger, but its a broken link, because it links to https://secure.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tipu%27s_Tiger , rather than https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Tipu%27s_Tiger (where it is supposed to link to). Can anyone correct it, or tell someone who can? Thanks! Note: This happens only when logged in to the secure server I guess. Lynch7 13:22, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's a Wikipedia:Geonotice located at MediaWiki:Geonotice.js. It's apparently formatted in a way that doesn't work at the secure server. I have posted to Wikipedia:Geonotice#VandA_Wikilounge. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:42, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I figured that; thanks! Lynch7 13:47, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Denice D. Lewis (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) Good morning!

I am trying to update my profile with info and images of MYSELF. From my own website. You have deleted it and said I cannot use the info. I would appreciate very much being able to talk to you via telephone in order to fully understand what to do. Thanks so much. Have a beautiful and blessed day.

Best regards,

Denice Lewis

Welcome to Wikipedia! Please see Wikipedia:Autobiography for information and guidlines on contibuting autobiographical information to the encyclopedia. Happy editing, hajatvrc with WikiLove @ 15:14, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The text that you added was copied from your website. At the bottom of that website it says that the text is copyrighted by you with All rights reserved. Wikipedia can not accept that information unless you release the copyright to a compatible license. You can do that by changing the text at the bottom of the page or by giving permission through the Volunteer Response Team. Also the text as written is probably not appropriate for wikipedia. The text is very promotional in tone and would need to be rewritten to stay in the article. Another problem is that information in wikipedia articles must be attributable to reliable sources. We summarize what reliable sources say about subjects and your personal website does not meet our definition of a reliable source as it is self published. Hope this helps. GB fan please tell me what you think of my editing 15:18, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)
Hello, for reusing text from your own website, see GB fan's and Hajatvrc's replies above. It's usually discouraged per the reasons they have given.
However, for the picture, please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials#Donating your photographs. We have no easy way of ascertaining ownership of a picture. To prove that you own the said picture and are willing to donate it to Wikipedia and the public, please do the following:
Send an email, ideally using the language from the template at WP:CONSENT:
(1) From an address associated with the original publication (i.e. your website) to [email protected];
(2) Then upload the file to Wikimedia Commons and place {{OTRS pending}} on the image page.
Someone will reply to your email, indicating whether the content and your license is acceptable and update the page to indicate that the confirmation of the license has been received.
Alternatively, if you have direct control of the website, simply change the licensing of the said pictures in your website to licenses compatible with Wikipedia (CC-BY-SA is recommended). Just make sure you understand the full implications of licensing them as such.
Let us know if you need further help with this, though the user who will reply to your email will likely be able to give you clearer instructions. Cheers.-- Obsidin Soul 15:23, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rate this page feature[edit]

Is there a possibility (e.g. in my preferences) to hide the 'Rate this page' box at the bottom of an article? Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 15:43, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Don't show the Article feedback widget on pages" at Special:Preferences#preftab-1. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:08, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tabloid sources template/ Improve sources?[edit]

Resolved

Is there a template that I could use to tag an article that uses too many tabloid sources? I can't see one using twinkle. doomgaze (talk) 16:15, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Try {{unreliable sources}}. Toodles. --Jayron32 17:22, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you old chap, that'll do the trick. doomgaze (talk) 18:42, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation page[edit]

The editors involved with the article Pinakes (Callimachus) would like to change it to just Pinakes, however this is a disambiguation page that basically serves no purpose. Can someone more technical straighten this out to where "Pinakes" goes straight to the existing article and delete the existing disambiguation page. For the conversations on the editors involved see Talk:Pinakes (Callimachus)#The name and Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2011 July 16#Pinakes_.28tables. The main two editors involved are User:Cardiffchestnut and User:Doug Coldwell. The other editors involved in conversation at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2011 July 16 just do not want to see a double redirect as us two main editors agree with. Since this is too technical for us to straighten out, can you help us please. Bottomline is we want Pinakes to go to the existing article and Pinax as it is now and no double redirects and no disambiguation page (as there is one now). Thanks...--Doug Coldwell talk 21:23, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Made redirect from Pinakes to Pinakes (Callimachus). That seems to solve the problem.--Doug Coldwell talk 10:45, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am working on a 501C3 NonProfit called "More American Jobs"

Can you help me get a copy of the photo: George Washington crossing the Delaware?
