This page is for questions about using Wikipedia. Please consider asking this question at the Miscellaneous reference desk. They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link and ask away. You could always try searching Wikipedia for an article related to the topic you want to know more about. I hope this helps. Kayau Voting IS evil 02:39, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your suggestion. When you feel an article needs improvement, please feel free to make those changes. Wikipedia is a wiki, so anyone can edit almost any article by simply following the edit this page link at the top. The Wikipedia community encourages you to be bold in updating pages. Don't worry too much about making honest mistakes — they're likely to be found and corrected quickly. If you're not sure how editing works, check out how to edit a page, or use the sandbox to try out your editing skills. New contributors are always welcome. You don't even need to log in (although there are many reasons why you might want to). mono(how's my driving?) 03:33, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stone cold steve austin[edit]

On his page it says 'announcers jim ross, bert and elmo stressed it would be his last time in wwe. There is a announcer called jim ross but not bert or elmo. Is this vandalism?Gobbleswoggler (talk) 07:48, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that was vandalism. It was actually one of about a dozen vandalisms in a row, now all reverted. Someguy1221 (talk) 07:59, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

User name vs. IP address in change log.[edit]

I have left suggestions for changes to articles, but never updated an article myself until now. The change was a simple correction to a misspelling which I see no reason to back out. However, I did it while not logged in, and now apparently my change is listed as a TCP/IP user. Can I change the change log to use my user name instead? And should I? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wcomm (talkcontribs) 09:03, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Sorry. We did this through 2005 but no longer allow it. IP edits are absolutely allowed and welcomed so from our end there's no problem with it having been made while you were logged out. However, if you want to take credit, you can make a dummy edit to the article, and leave a message in your edit summary that the prior edit was by you. Note a method for alerting yourself that you're not logged in: if like me you absolutely despise the new vector skin that was forced down our throats (without proper testing), check in your preferences under the Appearance tab, the radio button for "MonoBook", which is the original default skin of the site. Thus, when you are not logged in, the whole place will have Vector's crappy look, and you'll be used to Monobook so it should be immediately, jarringly obvious you're logged out. To even further make it obvious, you can change the save page button to a different color by creating a page at User:Wcomm/monobook.css and adding the text
/* Turn the "Save page" button green if I'm logged in */
 INPUT#wpSave {
   background-color:#88ff88;
 }
Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 09:24, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Using Vector's crappy look to indicate I'm not logged in works for me. Of course, if they ever fix it so it looks decent... Dougweller (talk) 09:43, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Posting link to Wikipedia[edit]

I'm trying to post a link to a wikipedia article. I'm copying the link in the address bar but it keeps saying "can't find that wikipedia article. Please check your spelling." but I'm copying and pasting. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rleightardif (talkcontribs) 09:51, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Post it here and we should be able to see what the problem is. Dougweller (talk) 11:21, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You can surround it with <nowiki></nowiki> when you post it here. Dougweller (talk) 11:22, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Documentation[edit]

We have started using WIKI for all documentation Many of the documents are in word Kindly share word to wiki converter ,The tables from word doesn't come clean

I was unable to create sub section like 1.2.3.4.5.6

using == for subsection after 6 subsections —Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.163.20.231 (talk) 11:12, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Who is "we", what are you documenting, and which wiki do you refer to? This is the English Wikipedia, a free encyclopedia. This is the Wikipedia Help desk, which answers questions about using Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a manual, guidebook, textbook, or scientific journal; therefore, many types of documentation do not belong here. (We do have extensive internal manuals that describe how to use Wikipedia itself.) Also, Wikipedia is not "WIKI". If you are part of an organization with documents you want to publish and control, you could start your own Enterprise wiki. See WP:BUSFAQ. If your organization has already done this, then at least one person at your organization needs to read the MediaWiki manuals to answer questions from users who have not or will not. To your questions:
  • On Wikipedia, we generally write articles from scratch rather than import them from other editors such as Microsoft Word. However, there are a few tools that might help. See the links under WP:EIW#Import and WP:EIW#Table. Do not expect miracles from these tools; they may or may not do what you need. In general, automatic document conversion tends to be less than fully satisfying.
  • Help:Section does not seem to specify the maximum subsection depth available under the MediaWiki software. My test in User:Teratornis/Sandbox4 seems to confirm your finding. If you need more than six levels of section headings, perhaps you need to split your pages into sub-pages. The features available in the MediaWiki software reflect the needs of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects. I cannot recall seeing a Wikipedia article that needed more than six levels of headings.

Virginia State Route 17[edit]

I am looking for a VA map showing Rt 17 with all the towns marked on it; ie., Yorktown, Glouster, Warrenton, Marshall, Delaplane, Paris. Does such a thing exist? I need it as a visual for a story I have written. VA is my home state. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.31.55.76 (talk) 16:30, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure that this is really a question about using Wikipedia, but you might print out this map that has U.S. 17 indicated in red and just add the town names yourself. Deor (talk) 17:22, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You can edit an SVG file with Inkscape. Also see OpenStreetMap, which provides several ways to generate freely reusable maps. It has pretty good coverage of the US now because some users imported the TIGER/Line map data. You did not mention how you intend to publish your story. See WP:REUSE for instructions on how to comply with licensing requirements when you re-use media from Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons. --Teratornis (talk) 20:31, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unable to register account[edit]

Irrespective of what username I enter I get a message saying it's already in use. I want to edit the dicography of Hugh mMsakela - I have an (autographed) album of his which is not listed. Bob Scheepers <email removed> —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.145.68.140 (talk) 16:39, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You can edit Hugh Masekela without creating an account. Just click the "Edit" link to the right of the "Discography" heading. An edit to a table could be tricky as a first edit, so use the "Preview" button to check that it looks right before you "Save".
But if you would like to have an account and are still running into problems, you can ask for one to be created for you by clicking here.
I have removed your email address to protect your privacy. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:51, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There are more than 12 million registered usernames. You don't mention any of the tried usernames but the message is probably right: They are all in use already. More than a thousand new accounts have been created since your post so there are no signs of an error in the process. Just keep trying and pick something unlikely if you are impatient, or see Special:ListUsers for taken usernames. "Bob Scheepers" is not taken. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:46, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also note that, paradoxical as it may seem, an album in your possession, autographed or not, is not a reliable source in Wikipedia's terms, and so cannot be used to reference any information. In order to add that album to the list, you should find a reliable public source that says that it exists. (See WP:V for why this apparently strange rule is in place, and very important). --ColinFine (talk) 23:56, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

adding to the lamda alumni list[edit]

I noticed that a friend of mine is not listed as an alumni of lamda despite attending in 1978, how do I correct this?Pc gwen cooper (talk) 17:15, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Which article? Alpha Kappa Lambda? You should read WP:NLIST first, lists should only include those who meet our criteria. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dougweller (talkcontribs) 19:03, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I assumed the user was referring to Category:Alumni of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. As this is a category it only lists alumni who have articles written about them, which again should only be those who meet the notability criteria. AJCham 19:12, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, sorry I added a 'b' didn't I? In any case we agree that her friend will have to meet our criteria to be added. Dougweller (talk) 20:18, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

iCarly Season 4 Episode One: iGot a Hot Room[edit]

iGot a Hot Room is to be the first episode in the fourth season of iCarly, airing on the 30th of July 2010 for the first time.

Here is a few things that will happen in iGot a Hot Room:

Gibby's blind grandfather will be giving Spencer a haircut. Carly's room is burned down thanks to a gummy bear lamp Spencer made for her birthday. Because Carly doesn't have a bedroom, Sam offers for her to stay at her house. Spencer earns 82,000 dollars because of a family heirloom that was lost in the fire. Scripted in the episode is a Dane Cook "lookalike". Dane Cook makes a cameo? Everybody plans to surprise Carly with a completely re-done bedroom. Sam, Spencer, Freddie, Gibby, and some painters all work together. (Includes a montage scene ending with a USA chant...) Freddie continues to speak Spanish. Sam speaks Italian Carly's bedroom is shown for the first time (At Last!). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wiffo92 (talkcontribs) 18:02, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The editor also created this as an article. I mean to speedy tag ICarly Season Four Episode 1: iGot a Hot Room but forgot to hit the tag only button. So if anyone wants to restore it, go ahead, but I think it was A1. Dougweller (talk) 19:02, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And in case Wiffo92 has no idea what you are talking about Dougweller, they should look at WP:CRYSTAL. --ColinFine (talk) 23:59, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Book authors violating their own copyright?[edit]

I noticed the comments on Talk:History of Falls Church in which an IP suggested too much of the source had been reproduced and that exceeds "fair use". Oklahombre (talk · contribs), the only editor of the History of Falls Church article (and the A Virginia Village Goes to War--Falls Church During the Civil War article about the book of the same name), claimed to be the author of that source and defended his use of his own book as a source. Can an author make a copyright violation of his own book? And is there a clear Conflict of Interest in the author so heavily citing his own book? Astronaut (talk) 20:26, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So far as copyright is concerned, there are three issues:
  1. Does the quote really exceed fair use? I have not looked, so I have no opinion.
  2. Did the author assign all his/her rights to someone else (perhaps the publisher)? If so, it is indeed possible for the author to violate the copyright.
  3. Is the wikipedia editor really the author? The Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission page discusses verifying that the proper entity has given permission to use the work. Jc3s5h (talk)

its not working fine! try the link http://harrypotterwiki.org/wiki/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.162.90.76 (talk) 23:10, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
http://harrypotterwiki.org/wiki/ is unrelated to Wikipedia and we have no control over that site. It is one of thousands of wikis. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:37, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
By looking at Google's cache I can see that harrypotterwiki.org uses the same MediaWiki software as Wikipedia but a lot of unrelated wikis use that software. Note that Wikipedia itself has a lot of articles about Harry Potter. We also have Portal:Harry Potter and Wikipedia:WikiProject Harry Potter. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:44, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I also went to http://harrypotterwiki.org/wiki/ and found it was down, try http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page. but as User:PrimeHunter said By looking at Google's cache I can see that harrypotterwiki.org uses the same MediaWiki software as Wikipedia but a lot of unrelated wikis use that software. Note that Wikipedia itself has a lot of articles about Harry Potter. We also have Portal:Harry Potter and Wikipedia:WikiProject Harry Potter. wikipedia is no related to HP Wiki. Why is article tagged orphan although it has over 30 links and how can the orphan tag be removed?[edit]

An article with more than 30 relevant links to other wiki pages has been tagged as an orphan. How can this tag be removed? Thanks for your guidance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mariros (talkcontribs) 23:14, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I guess you refer to Susan Gardner (artist). Read the message and follow the links. It's about other pages containing a link leading to Susan Gardner (artist). Special:WhatLinksHere/Susan Gardner (artist) shows the only link to the article is from a redirect. No other articles link to it. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:33, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Just to clarify: An orphan is not an article that contains no links to other articles; it is an article with no, or few, incoming links (links from other articles to it). Deor (talk) 00:16, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
