Styling of words, e.g. handmade, hand-made, hand made[edit]

This keeps bothering me and I haven't yet come across a style guide or such that addresses the question. Sometimes people use words which 'normally' have a hyphen, or which 'normally' are joined, but rather they split up the word into two parts. It happens quite too often for it to be confusion by just non-native English speakers. Actually all sorts of misusages occur (see [1]) and knowing where the applicable style guide is would be a help. Any pointers? Shenme 05:43, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say this is more of a spelling issue than a style issue. I would just use your preferred dictionary to correct the spellings. My dictionary of choice, Merriam-Webster (American English), lists "handmade" and "in fact" and those are the spellings I would use. I don't think there's any formal policy; I would take "Spell words correctly!" or "Use spellings that occur in the dictionary!" as appropriate. (Of course, this does not apply to switching national varities of English, such as British to American English.) — Knowledge Seeker 05:50, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As long as you have an on line dictionary to back you up, stomp out grammatically wrong uses as you have shown. And yes, everyone can make mistakes as noticed in the two paragraphs above and mine as well ;) -- That Guy, From That Show! 07:02, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Requested features[edit]

How would one go about requesting features (or extensions) for MediaWiki?

One is adding a count for the number of images in a category on the category, for example Category:Astronomy_images states "There are 0 pages in this section of this category.", but makes no reference to the image below it.

I'd also like to request a feature to have Special:uncategorized pages be seperable by namespace. I want to be able to find uncategorized images as well as other pages.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!. Chris M. 07:29, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/ is the place.--Commander Keane 07:34, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've been told that is the place before, but I don't know how to actually request such a feature on that site. All I see is stuff about bug reports and nothing looks useful for this, if you could elaborate that'd be great, thanks. Chris M. 15:45, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Feature requests and bug reports are handled the same, i.e. just enter your feature request as if it were a bug report. -- Rick Block (talk) 16:29, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation[edit]

Hi,

I created an article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Sutherland_%28author%29. I want to distinguish it from another entry for a different George Sutherland, but don't think that I have achieved this. Can you tell me how to fix it.

Collywolly 11:35, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If there are only the two George Sutherland articles, it would be best to go to the George Sutherland page and add :This article is about the English-born U.S. jurist and political figure. For the Scottish-born Australian writer, see George Sutherland (author). to the top of the page (do not remove the quotation marks as these are italics tags). The reverse of this would also be useful on the author page. If there are more than two George Sutherland articles, it might be worth considering setting up a disambiguation page (let us know if you want instructions on how to do this). How can I make articles on Wikipedia?[edit]

How can i create an article on Wikipedia. I have something brand new.

Box At Bottom[edit]

I see on many articles a box at the bottom of the article with links to different articles.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digimon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neopet

Those are two examples. I want to create one for an article to add links to the character articles of that show, but I don't know how to make one. I have gone to other pages and clicked Edit so that I could copy the code for the box so that I could paste it in the other article and change the text and links inside it, but the code for it is missing.

So I have two questions.

How do you make those boxes? How come you can't edit them?

Sorry if I was confusing, but I have never been very good at explaining, and it doesn't help that I don't know the name of that box. :(

Those boxes are what you call templates. For example, you can edit the box displayed in the Neopet article by going to Template:Viacom. To make your own template, just type in Template:TEMPLATENAME in the search box on the left-hand side of your screen and then hit go. Now you can create the article. To include it on the pages you want, simply add its name inbetween curly brackets: TestName . More info at Help:Template. --Hetar 22:19, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to know which templates consists some page, click on the 'edit' on this page. Used templates are always listed at the bottom on that page. Jacek Kendysz 22:27, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Images[edit]

I have another question. How do you add images to articles? I checked the URL of images on articles, and it said upload.wikipedia. When I tried to put an image from another site in it, nothing appeared. So I have three questions.

How do you add images to the article (not the code, but how do make the image actually appear)? Can images from other sites not be used, or does it just not work for me? What is upload.wiki, and can anyone add images to it?

Thank you. Superneoking 00:10, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Generally, you should not use images from other websites. Normally this violates both our policies as well as multiple legal restrictions. If the image in question has been released under a free license or you think it qualifies for a fair use exception then you will need to upload it. Once the image has been uploaded it can be included in the article by using the following code . You can find more information at Images and Media Help. --Hetar 02:03, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question of notability[edit]

I heard an ensemble on Prairie Home Companion tonight, which was their second appearance on the show at least, that doesn't have an article. I looked over the notability requirements for music acts and they don't meet a single one that I know of. Although, they've been together since 1900 which I think is a rather long time and therefore notable. Also, their second CD will be coming out later this year. So, does anyone else think that this group's article would survive? Dismas|(talk) 00:57, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Any group that's been together for 106 years isn't just notable, but worthy of serious scientific examination. --Dweller 01:04, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
They're not the original members of course...  :-) Although, two of the members have been with the group for more than 60 years. Dismas|(talk) 01:23, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Could you let us know the name of this group and if possible a link to an online source that discusses them? Thanks. Road Wizard 01:29, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
They are the Milwaukee Mandolin Orchestra. Here'stheir write up at the Classical Mandolin Society page. And according to this they are the "only mandolin group in America in continuous existence since the turn of the century". That's just after a quick google search. I'm aware of WP:BITE and I'm not biting by pointing out the obviousness in the fact that someone introducing themselves in a professional capacity of an organization would provide an e-mail like an AOL address. It would be like the President of Harvard giving you his hotmail address to contact him about school business. --Crossmr 03:05, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Enough. This is a debate that can go nowhere and the wrong place for it.--Fuhghettaboutit 03:13, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Crossmr, Concentration (game show) was produced from 1958 to 1973. It would be not at all surprising if a producer from the show had retired or moved to a position with another broadcasting corporation in the intervening three decades. In either case, using a personal email address would be quite reasonable. Please be civil and don't bite the new editors – particularly not those who have specialized expertise which they have made a good-faith offer to share – by posting implied criticisms without doing your research first. Please make a small addition about this procedure on your Help page for foreigners. On the FAQ I also could find nothing. Known to you all, but not to somebody outside your community.

Hi Shawn. Welcome to Wikipedia. In answer to your question, please See: Help:Starting a new page. You might also look at Wikipedia:Your first article and Wikipedia:How to write a great article. Please note that a general article on horse massaging may be appropriate (I am not familiar with the subject) but an article promoting a specific horse massaging product is probably not, as articles used for advertizing purposes are discouraged. Legal question about media and naming of criminal suspects[edit]

In this discussion -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:2006_Toronto_terrorism_case#.22who_cannot_be_named.22

We are trying to work out if American media law takes precendence over that of canada in regards to the naming of subjects in criminal investigations. I'm *very* hazy about this but I *think* that in an ongoing effect to avoid american-bias we default to the norms of the country the offense happened in unless there is a good reason? Confused! Many thanks for any help on this matter. --Charlesknight 21:08, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This isn't really a helpdesk question - you could ask at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Miscellaneous, or you could try exploring Portal:Law to find some relevant expertise. It looks from the talk page as if a bit more discussion should sort out the dispute - if not, then reading the Wikipedia:Dispute resolution procedure is a good idea. --HughCharlesParker (talk - contribs) 21:42, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As I understand it, Wikipedia is hosted in Florida, so the only applicable law is American (US) law, and specifically Florida Law. Canadian law does not affect Wikimedia as hosts of the content. Individual contributors may also be ruled by the laws of the country from which they are contributing. --Cherry blossom tree 21:46, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
but this isn't a discussion of the legality of the article, it's a discussion about that law as it applies to the subject of an article - the dispute is about accurate wording, not whether we can legitimately release information. --HughCharlesParker (talk - contribs) 21:54, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I know the discussion isn't about the legal situation, but the question was. --Cherry blossom tree 22:03, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Whatever you put into an article has to be backed up by reliable and accesible sources. If suspects' full names aren't publicly available, you can't provide sources and thus not put it in the article. If you have sources, you can as long as it is allowed by Florida or US law. - Mgm|(talk) 07:28, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

IP signing with non-existent usernames[edit]

I discovered a talk page where an IP had signed with a non-existent userpage, so its not like they were trying to impersonate someone. I checked the username, no user page, no talk page, no contribs. I don't think it's a big deal (without looking at the specific case) but if you like you could add the correct signature after the incorrect one. I avoid changing other people's comments.--Commander Keane 05:09, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Unless it is impersonating / vote-stacking attempt then it probably isn't a great deal. (In those situations, changing the signature and explain it in edit summary probably is a good idea) Otherwise it may just be an anonymous user trying to use some sort of name to identify him/her, not too big deal since no harm is done. --WinHunter (talk) 05:42, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Visibility of policies/guidelines[edit]

I have been using Wikipedia for a long time but every day, it seems like, I discover a new policy that I have never heard of. Today I discovered the guideline about avoiding trivia, which I was about to suggest. The search on Wikipedia is necessarily limited, to save system resources, but how else can I search for policies? The lists of policies are endless and Wikipedia has such an unfathomable amount of information on it that searching yields no desirable results. --Stellis 08:53, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another trick you can use is to limit your search to only return results from a certain namespace (such as, in your case, Wikipedia:). To do this, search for the term you're looking for (type it into the search box and click "Search"), then scroll to the bottom, where you can search for a term only in certain namespaces. — QuantumEleven 09:44, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How to mark a suspected copyright violation[edit]

I think that Image:Future_history_01.jpg is still under copyright, and I don't think it qualifies as fair use. I checked with the uploader and they don't have a reason to believe it's out of copyright.

I looked at the list of copyright-related image tags, and I think imagevio is what I need. However, it appears that that tag is used to replace the image, whereas what I'd like to just add a tag that flags it for deletion. Do I just delete the image and put in imagevio, or is there a way that leaves the image in place till a decision is made by an admin? Thanks. Mike Christie 12:46, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Put imagevio in the image description page and don't delete it until a decision is made. If you have any troubles, look at how it's done in some of the images at WP:CP. Simple enough, don't you think ;) fetofs Hello! 13:01, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks -- I added imagevio; part of what bothered me about using that template was that it wants a URL, which is not relevant in this case. I just left it blank and added a reason on the copyright problems page. Thanks for the help. Mike Christie 13:14, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maths symbols etc[edit]

Hi,

I am constructing an article in MS Office Word 2003 with the help of MathType 5.5. The article contains MS Word tables and various MathType symbol constructions both within cells of the tables and in the body of the text. I am completely new to Wiki and haven't managed to locate information within Wiki on how to upload the kind of document I have in mind. Please advise me on what to do.

I should be grateful if you could respond to "mytalk".

EpiGuru 14:16, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's possible to upload an MS Word document to Wikipedia. Perhaps there is a program that can make the conversion, but I haven't heard of one. Wikipedia articles (or, for that matter, pages in any site based on MediaWiki - the engine behind Wikipedia and similar sites) should be written in Wiki markup. The pages Wikipedia:How to edit an article and Help:Formula provide some good information about it. -- Meni Rosenfeld (talk) 15:10, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Style question: capitalization of the names of French-language organizations[edit]

I am working on a translation of the article fr:Conseil national de la Résistance, an umbrella organization formed in 1943 to coordinate the different French resistance movements. What should the title of the article be in the English Wikipedia? The four possibilities are:

  1. Conseil national de la Résistance
  2. Conseil National de la Résistance
  3. National Council of the Resistance
  4. National Resistance Council

In my view, it should be either (1) or (2) but I'm not sure which one. As for (3) and (4), both have been used in other English Wikipedia articles [3] but in general the organization seems to be known in English by its French name. Given the nature of the organization, I doubt that it ever adopted an official English-language version of its name.

In French, initial caps are not routinely used in titles after the first word, so in French the organization is called Conseil national de la Résistance, but I'm wondering if in the English Wikipedia we should nevertheless refer to the organization as Conseil National de la Résistance. (But if so, why not Conseil National De La Résistance?)

I have looked at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (capital letters) and Wikipedia:Naming conventions but did not see a clear answer to this question. Before I actually create the article, I would like some guidance on whether to capitalize the N or not. --Mathew5000 16:02, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say 2, and redirect from the other pages. If you can remember, send me a link when you're done- I wouldn't mind reading it! EvocativeIntrigue TALK | EMAIL 16:59, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. For some reason 2 does seem most natural, but it's also the most illogical. If we refer to the organization by its French-language name, shouldn't we use French-language capitalization rules, just as if it were a film or a book (e.g. Au revoir, les enfants)? For organizations, I've seen both capitalization styles used for the titles of English-wiki articles on French organizations, e.g. Section française de l'Internationale ouvrière and Confédération Française Démocratique du Travail. --Mathew5000 17:18, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I finished my (very rough) translation: Conseil National de la Résistance.--Mathew5000 19:30, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr question[edit]

There is an image on somebody's Flickr account that I want to add to Wikipedia (the commons) and an article. (Actually, there are probably a lot of pictures on Flickr I'd like to add so this applies to many images.) The image has the following license: CC Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.0 so it says I'm free to copy, distribute, display, and perform the work. So, am I correct in saying that all I need to do it upload the picture to the commons and include in the comments box the license used, the person's Flickr ID and the URL to the image? I know there is a Wiki program that does this but I don't want to have to mess around with getting access to it and everything.--NMajdantalk 18:48, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't fully understand what you quote as the license, but Wikipedia cannot accept any photo released under a "no commercial use" license. Notinasnaid 18:50, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't aware Wikipedia was commercial use. Here is the license used.--NMajdantalk 18:53, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind. Found the link. Here for those interested. That sucks.--NMajdantalk 18:58, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, let me pose another question. If the photo on Flickr does have a noncommercial license (such as this one), then is my statement in my original post correct?--NMajdantalk 19:03, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 (as in )is an image license accepted by Wikipedia. --WinHunter (talk) 19:15, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Btw, Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 allows commercial use. --WinHunter (talk) 19:18, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
So then my statement about including the license, the flickr user's id, and a link to the image in the upload summary is correct.--NMajdantalk 19:20, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If the license is this one then yes, also please select cc-by-2.0 from the dropdown list of licenses when you upload the image. --WinHunter (talk) 19:38, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you meant to say "If the photo on Flickr does not have a noncommercial license" then your original statement was correct. You may also want to let the Flickr user know but that isnt a requirement. --Cherry blossom tree 20:38, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Father of Hollywood, HJ Whitley[edit]

Hobart Johnston Whitley named and developed the area today known as Hollywood, California. HJ is what Hobart Johnston Whitley was called by, and was well known by the locals as a developer and mover and shaker of Los Angeles. HJ was instrumental in motivating the movie industry to move to his town of Hollywood. He formed several groups of businessmen which benefited by his expertise in developing the modern cities of his time. He formed a group of local business men to purchase the Van Nuys Lankershim lands of the San Fernando Valley. This was his move to get the land annexed to the City of Los Angeles for the water needed to sustain the big valley development he was about to accomplish. HJ is well known the Western United States history as well. Hobart was a good friend of Theodore Roosevelt and was on the board of directors of for the Chicago Rock Island Railroad in late 1800. He developed over 140 towns in the West. HJ was at the Oklahoma run and persuaded the U.S. Congress in Washington to allow Guthrie to be capitol of the new state. In the early 1900 Los Angeles and Southern California history, HJ is being brought to light for his great contributions to the cities that he was apart of. HJ, his family and friends has many unpublished memoirs and are being brought to the public in the near future by the book, The Father of Hollywood by his great granddaughter, Gaelyn Whitley Keith. http://www.thefatherofhollywood.com/

Sub-category question[edit]

Normally, when a catagory (ex. Category:Selected anniversaries) is part of another category (Category:Wikipedia featured content), it will appear on the second category's list of Subcategories.

However, this is not true of Category:Wikipedia featured desktop backgrounds under Category:Wikipedia featured pictures. Here, "desktop backgrounds" was put in "featured pictures", but doesn't show up in its list of subcategories.

Why is this so? --kenb215 01:27, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's there, just not on the first (or second) page or 200 entries in the category. That's why the text immediately above the subcategories says "more may be shown on subsequent pages". -- Rick Block (talk) 02:20, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alphabetized categories?[edit]

When adding categories to a page, is it standard for them to be listed alphabetically (for example: British film actors | Living people | Year of birth missing), or is that just some users' preference, or are somewhat-related categories supposed to be grouped together? Maybe a useless question, but I've been wondering about it. -- Flummery 04:02, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From what I have seen alphabetizing is the perference, it helps drastically with orgnaization. Yanksox (talk) 04:12, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The default is that category are listed alphabetically, though parameters entered in the category links can change the list method e.g. would cause the article to list as if "2000" is the article name, then it is being sorted alphabatically using those entered parameters. --WinHunter (talk) 04:13, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info, Yanksox and WinHunter. Flummery 04:22, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Finding an article from the "On This Day..." box.[edit]

On Mon. June, 19, yesterday, in the box "On This Day...", there was a citation about the first baseball game to use modern rules being played in 1846. I came back to re-read the article, but the section had been updated. I looked in the archive section, which led me to a page titled "History of baseball in the United States." This is not the same article that was linked there on the 19th. I was wondering if anybody could tell me what that page was so I may finish reading it. James B.

Possibly New York Knickerbockers. You can also get info on that game from a Google search [4].--Mathew5000 06:36, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

:Click on the archive link in the "On This Day" box, which gives this link. --WinHunter (talk) 06:35, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On the main page under "On this day..." there is a link named "Archive", click it and you get the current month, from which you can get to Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/June 19. So it looks like the article referenced was in fact History of baseball in the United States.--Mathew5000 17:42, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Featured articles – RSS2[edit]

Hello. Probably this is the wrong place to suggest something like this, but I have put up a Featured Articles RSS @ http://lagring.net/wikipedia.rss and wondered if that is something that could be cool to have at the front page. Not my RSS feed but that at the same time someone creates the featured article, the RSS also gets created. There should also have been a RSS for QOTD, news and featured picture.

  • We already have some RSS feeds at WP:RSS. And as far as I know correctly working RSS feeds update automatically when a new feature article is posted. - Mgm|(talk) 11:42, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Ai ai ai ai ai! But how come it isn't on the frontpage?
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS 2.0"nofollow" class="external free">http://helgo.net/simon/wikipedia/fa.xml" />

And come on, it doesn't seem like the most serious page! I'm thinking more of en.wikipedia.org/featured.xml

  • Where did helgo.net come from? I don't see it listed anywhere. - Mgm|(talk) 12:28, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think this is due to some technique difficulties. Since featured articles are stored in a day by day format (as opposed to changes in a single page), local rss feed doesn't work. --WinHunter (talk) 12:45, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Btw this helgo xml is created by one of the Wikipedia user, User:Skagedal/Fafafa, using a python program which is run daily. --WinHunter (talk) 12:47, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request to write a balanced biography[edit]

I came across the page for Andrew Filipowski which struck me as blatant self-promotion. Turns out it is a verbatim copy of this person's grandiloquent PR bio. In typical circumstances I would have prodded it, however this person is clearly notable so I tagged it POV and Autobio instead. Should it be tagged copyvio too? I would like this page to be replaced with a short balanced biography, but I don't know the person's history well enough to do it myself. What is the best place to call for attention to this page, so that someone who knows better can start the editing process? This person is known as a controversial figure so the page could quickly become sensitive... Thanks in advance for any hints you can provide. -- JFG 14:27, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why?--Dejudicibus 16:54, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Use En icon. It gives (in English). It icon gives (in Italian) also. Jacek Kendysz 17:01, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Seven Day Theory[edit]

It is very offensive to Tupac Shakur's memory to call him a "gangsta rapper" as you have done on your page about the Seven Day Theory. It is an insult. He was not "gangsta" which, by definition, means "gang member involved with violence". Please take out anything that says Tupac Shakur is a gangsta rapper. It is insulting, and I'm sure it's not the way he would have wanted to be remembered.

  • Not quite. Our article gangsta rap says: Gangsta rap is a subgenre of hip hop music which involves a lyrical focus on the lifestyles of inner-city criminals & gangmembers. So it describes the song's subject rather than the artist performing it. - Mgm|(talk) 20:35, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I created an article about myself titled "Gary Freedman." I am an attorney but do not practice law so I obtain no commercial benefit from an article in Wikipedia. I link to several of my blogs which are of literary interest. I derive no commercial benefit whatsoever from my blogging activity.

Gary Freedman is notable in that he authored a lengthy autobiography that is written entirely in the form of quotations. This book, titled Significant Moments, is, to the best of my knowledge, one of the few books of its kind.

Central High School of Philadelphia is a Wikipedia entry and should have a link.

There's no set limit. See User:Durin/Admin charts for various charts on the subject. You'll see, for example, that with 2000 edits total you'd have an 80% chance of success. I understand (I don't vote myself) that people like to see a nice spread of edits (which rather reminds me of bombing patterns from Catch-22, but there we go.) Sorry if that's not much help. Inappropriate User Page[edit]

User:Zacluva323 was recently created, and i do not think that the content is very appropriate. Is this for me to comment/take action on, or is the content of a user page solely decided by the user in question? Ollie 21:51, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ha, well, i see it has been deleted! In that case, what should i have done about it? Ollie 22:12, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I was the one that deleted the page in question. Here's why:
  1. I doubt this is the person's own contact details. They talk about the girl in third person and ask the reader to contact them. Sharing someone else's contact details online is not allowed by law and thus we are allowed to stop it.
  2. Such information is a spam/vandal/troublemaker magnet. While Wikipedia is not censored, we should protect minors from getting in serious trouble by posting such contact information and educate them about safe surfing habits.

Asking here's fine, but if you think it should be deleted, you could've taken it to WP:MFD, asked admins at WP:AN/I to take action or simply tag it for speedy deletion yourself using db (actually your reason). - Mgm|(talk) 22:18, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't sure if it was my place to ask for it to be deleted or not, hence the question. But anyhow, thanks for the help. Ollie 22:24, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edit history of a Section?[edit]

Sometimes in looking at an article of some length I want to find out the history of a section of it, or of a particular sentence. Generally to see how long it's been in the article (a day? a week? a year?) and sometimes to see who put it in. Is that possible? For many articles, especially those that get vandalized every day such as Dick Cheney, the article's edit history is practically impossible to use, but might be practical if you could filter it by changes to just a particular section. --Mathew5000 05:53, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • It wasn't a country that invented soccer. I'm positive a person did it. - Mgm|(talk) 20:54, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
To be more helpful: Soccer#History and development has a lot of information, but the question should be more specific. Games similar to soccer have been played throughout history. I suspect you want to know not where the game was invented, but which country set up the current rules of the game, which our article answers. - Mgm|(talk) 20:57, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It was first played in England and has been played since the middle ages though the matches then basically just a huge fight to get the ball into the goal with hundreds of players on each team. The first rule book was in 1863 written by The Football Association (the english FA).

Unresponsive controversial editors[edit]

What is the best way to deal with an editor making controversial edits who is completely unresponsive to messages on their talk space, and requests in the reverts and any subsequent edits to take it to the talk page of the article, especially when its a part of the article thats already under discussion? I'm not talking they make an edit, you put an edit on their talk page and they immediately make another edit again. I'm talking say over the period of an hour or two, over 3 or 4 articles? --Crossmr 22:35, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There are various solutions at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution, of varying severity. If the other user refuses to engage in any of them then you might want to post the details at the administrator's noticeboard to see if anyone wants to intervene. --Cherry blossom tree 22:43, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If it's actually a plausible death threat, post a comment describing the situation (concisely, clearly, without invective, and – ideally – with diffs) on the incidents page of the administrators' noticeboard. Alternatively, contact an active administrator by email, if you don't want the complaint to be publicly visible. Such complaints should be acted upon quite rapidly. Unecessary list?[edit]

(I have asked about this before, but didn't get a clear answer) Is there any Wikipedia policy which would clear up the issue of the article Drina, specifically whether it is okay to list all of the towns a river passes through, and whether it counts as notable? Mo-Al 18:37, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, the article seems to be substantial enough to remain as it is: the listing is a little on the tedious side, perhaps, but is a useful reference to anyone wishing to know which towns do pass through it. My Wiki article "reads like an advertisement"[edit]

I just submitted an article (Murphy Rebel Aircraft) for the Wikipedia. I tried to keep it as straight forward and factual as I could - but the page has a "header in a block" that says "this article reads like an advertisement" I have followed many pages trying to find how to reword it so that it is "acceptable" to Wiki - but at the end of the day (2 AM in the morning actually) I can't see how to "de-advertise" a factual article about a kit built aircraft ?!?

I didn't want to write a wafly article that went on & on about personal junk - just a straight forward / useful information one

ALSO (and please be aware , that I am NO computer junkie ) I cannot figure out HOW to "Tag" my photo (to go with the article) - so that it will be accepted to appear WITH the article :o( Again- I followed many link pages - but nothing makes sense to me ... (and this IS my first ever attempt to contribute an article too)

I found my photot on the "untagged photos " page (VH-REB at Ayers Rock airport) - but I just can't figure out HOW to "tag" it

Thanks Rick Harper [email removed to prevent spam] user Rebel541 Rebel541 22:36, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, welcome to Wikipedia! To tag your image, go to Image:VH-REB at Ayers Rock .jpg, click edit this page, and add one of these tags.
To add your image to the article, use on the article.
For more info please see the note I left on your talk page.
BTW, you can automatically sign your name by writing ~~~~. WP 22:52, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Rick. My suggestion is to let Wikipedia process your article a bit. Looking it over, I think the problem is less that it reads like an ad as that it needs "wikification." I'll change the template (now you'll see a different box); let's see what getting some other eyes on it will accomplish. Don't worry too much about it. · rodii · 22:59, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, I don't think the article necessarily reads like an advertisement. It's just a standard new short article - thanks for contributing! One minor point: try not to use Wiki as an abbreviation for Wikipedia. Wiki is a general term for editable websites such as these. --Kwekubo 23:06, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jim Fitzpatrick Roller Derby[edit]

Hi, I was wondering why some external links were deleted from the site? I think one may have seemed redundant, but not all of them. One was a book publisher, one was a Japanese site (Roller Game with video and photos)and one was an American Roller Derby site (ARDL Bay City Bombers also with video, mention and photos)two were Yahoo! Groups sites: Ann Calvello and Joan Weston. Going to those sites also verifies the info is correct and not made up.

I try to read the info thinking someone was vandalizing the site, but then read into it. Please let me know if any or all the info can be readded. Thanks, Jim —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.121.32.42 (talkcontribs)

  • Information that is used to write the article should be in a "references" section rather than the external links. However, I doubt Yahoo groups are considered reliable sources. Remember that Wikipedia isn't about linking as much sites as possible. The external links should offer more detailed information about the subject that couldn't be included in the article and generally video/picture sites aren't the type of links usually looked for. Perhaps Wikipedia:External links will provide you with the info you need? - Mgm|(talk) 07:24, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I removed the non-links from the "External links" section. In other words, the only things I removed were those that weren't actual links. I wouldn't even have looked twice if they had been links to an external site, but they weren't. Personally, I agree with Mgm that Yahoo groups aren't really reliable sources but if they had been linked I wouldn't have removed them. I hope that answers your question. upload help[edit]

Can someone please upload this image file for me:

82.131.184.53 12:37, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

p.s. I asked this question at the reference desk but only got rude and unhelpful replies.

Here's another rude and unhelpful reply. That image has no place on Wikipedia, and you need to watch out for disrupting Wikipedia to make a point. As you no doubt know, the issue of 9/11 conspiracies is causing a big ruckus right now, and I don't think anyone should be helping someone who can't be bothered to identify himself to stir the shit even more. If it's so important for you to upload that image, get an account, log in, and do it yourself. Then I think your next move would be to put it on people's talk pages and get banned. · rodii · 15:17, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Why would I put an image on someone else 's talk page? What is "stirring up shit", etc. Is this reply in good faith? I'd only put the image one my own (IP's) talk page, signing it. You can already see my contributions, etc, and I sign my posts. I don't see why I should be excluded from discussing with people, and I certainly don't wish to vandalize anyone's talk page. :( I read "disrupting wikipedia to make a point", but I think you might think I intend to vandalize, but this is not the case. Could you please help me by uploading the picture I linked? Thank you. 82.131.184.53 15:54, 23 June 2006 (UTC).[reply]
So when you say you'd like to be able to inline it on talk pages, plural, does that mean you have more than one? And you're really that concenred about getting it on to the talk page of an anonymous IP address, even though you've never edited either the user or talk page in any way? That IP address is persistent enough for you to want to add the image to that talk page, but you're unwilling to get an actual account? And how should your upload helpers know how to tag it, and why should they bear the responsibility for copyright issues instead of you? And are we supposed to believe that you can't create an account because you need help thinking of a username? I see lots of questions at the refdesk that you never gave saisfactory answers to. Sorry, the whole thing smells bad to me. But it doesn't matter, I see no reason to help you upload such a useless image to Wikipedia. Get an account, and you can do it yourself. · rodii · 16:47, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder if this person understands the concept of an open source encyclopedia - even the basics, what is your responsibility, what's not. Getting a user account, basic ettiquette (that how you spell it?) and simple polity. Is this Willy on Wheels in disguise, just wasting our time instead of moving pages (for a change)? I wonder, if I were an admin, I might consider banning you for simply being annoying - and rude and unhelpful, just like me. Alright, here's a username, you just need to email me, and I'll give you it. I'll tell you, it will work - if it doesn't, its not wikipedia's fault. Importing photographs into an article[edit]

Hello, all. I'm a budding contributor to Wikipedia. Please can you tell me, in idiots' language (i.e., keep it laughably simple) how I can import photographs (they are copyright-cleared) into an article. Please could you answer these questions SPECIFICALLY and in order:

  • Is there a Wikipedia link that will give me procedure on importing?
  • What governs the size of the picture you're importing? (how do you control the size)
  • When Wikipedia prints photographs from a private source, do they become Wiki's copyright or does the source retain copyright?
  • How may we credit the photographer?
  • How do you obtain copyright permissions for copyrighted photographs?

I thank you. FClef 13:59, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

* Is there a Wikipedia link that will give me procedure on importing?
In the toolbox on the left-hand side of the page, click on Upload file.
* What governs the size of the picture you're importing? (how do you control the size)
The size of images on pages is determined per page. Upload the file with its original resolution (don't shrink it). You can scale the image down on the article you wish to insert it in.
* When Wikipedia uses photographs from a private source, do they become Wiki's copyright or does the source retain copyright?
The source/owner retains all copyrights (unless it's public domain) and licences the media for use on Wikipedia (and related projects).
* How may we credit the photographer?
When you click on Upload file, just put the details of the author/owner in the Summary field as well as the licenses used.
* How do you obtain copyright permissions for copyrighted photographs?
Due to the fact that Wikipedia is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License, and that articles are freely copied, Wikipedia does not allow the use of copyrighted images unless they meet the fair use rationale.
You ask the copyright holder to release the image under a free license. - Mgm|(talk) 15:55, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
For more information, see our Image use policy, how to upload, and the Image_copyright_tags available. Harryboyles 14:54, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A minor technical aside—all GFDL content is copyrighted, too. All of Wikipedia is, in fact. The GFDL just a license which specifies the terms and conditions under which other people may duplicate and redistribute this copyrighted material. Similarly, copyrighted images are permitted on Wikipedia under other than 'fair use' conditions—they must be licensed under the GFDL or another compatible 'free' license. You can use the "Upload file" link on the left inside the toolbox. Select the license as - Attribution-Sharealike 2.0 (as in de:Bild:Kraftwerk Ekibastus.jpg) and include both the "de" link and its image summary when you upload.--WinHunter (talk) 19:43, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much, WinHunter, but you please help me a bit more with these questions: (1) When I upload, I will be asked from where to download the image. Do I reply with http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/de/2/23/Kraftwerk_Ekibastus.jpg? (2) When I am asked to select an option, I select cc-by-sa-20, is that correct? (3) The "de' link you gave me is all in German and I don't know which part is the image summary. Could you look at it and tell me specifically what I should include? Thanks again. - mbeychok 20:13, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You must first download the image from the web site to your own computer (e.g. to your desktop, but anywhere will do). Then you fill in the location of the file on your computer. The easiest way to do that is to click the Browse button to find it. Notinasnaid 20:16, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
1. Yes, just quote that url. 2. Since cc-by-sa-2.0 is not available from the dropdown license list, just enter as part of the image summary. 3. German: Das Kohlekraftwerk Ekibastus, K-U Reitmann (selbst fotografiert, 2005) translated to (using google translate) English: The coal-fired power station Ekibastus, K-U riding man (photographs, 2005)
After you uplaod the image you can post the image link here so I can verify if you have uploaded it correctly. --WinHunter (talk) 20:32, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The Wikipedia upload would not work using the above URL (I tried twice). Delete or Revert[edit]

I am relatively new to Wikipedia.

I found this article: Gubi_Sandhu

I cannot see how this belongs on Wikipedia. I am not sure if this is vandalism or bad writing.

It appears to me that an earlier version was better, and more wiki-like.

Could someone clear things up?

Thank You,

Writing an article[edit]

I followed the instructions on writing an article.I completed the edit/summary. The article was entitled Zbark. The reason for this is that it is a term used in Wikipedia when you search for Flat Fee. Here is the article: Zbark: An entirely new Real Estate Brokerage business model that replaces the outdated listing commissions of the 20th Century. The model helps consumers that are buying and/or selling real estate. It puts the consumer in control of the buying/selling process rather than a real estate agent and/or broker. It is a fee based system rather than a commission system.

Here is where the term Zbark is quoted in Wikipedia: Real Estate

A way that homeowners can list their property on a local MLS (Multiple Listing Service) and www.Realtor.com for one fee. This is a radical departure from the listing commission that is usually associated with a homeowner selling their property. The homeowner may or may not choose to pay a Buyer's Agent (a real estate agent) whom brings the homeowner a contract. Most Flat Fee Brokers feel that it helps to sell the property faster if the homeowner agrees to compensate the Buyer's Agent. Federal and State Law state all Real Estate commissions are negotiable. The name Zbark is a synonym for Flat Fee with regards to Real Estate. It is defined as: An entirely new Real Estate Brokerage business model that replaces the outdated listing fees of the 20th Century. The model helps consumers that are buying and/or selling real estate. It puts the consumer in control of the buying/selling process rather than a real estate agent and/or broker. It is a fee based system rather that a commission system.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You, Michael Thomas

Hiya Shiraz4848/Michael. Looks to me like that bit of information is actually an embedded ad, rather than authentically helpful information in the article. Instead of making the article in question, I'd be tempted to remove the ad from the Real Estate article instead. Take care! :D ~Kylu (u|t) 23:57, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

wikilinks in bold format?[edit]

Hi, should wikilinks of characters' or people be in bold? For example, should a wikilink for Mr. George Jones be in bold? I read the Manual of Style, but I didn't find anything relating to fictional characters. An annonymous user bolded the names at [7]

If you need any more info or another example, let me know and I'll try to help.

Cheers. --Starionwolf 02:11, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No. In fact, bold should be used very sparingly outside headings and the bolded subject of the article in the lead paragraph. · rodii · 02:37, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In fact, headers are bolded automatically if you use the header format. So you should rarely bold anything. Titles of books and movies, I believe, should be in italics, but names should be left as is. - Mgm|(talk) 11:21, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for the explaination. I remember that a subject in the lead section or introduction should be in bold. --Starionwolf 20:47, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, another common use of bold is in table row or column headers. It may be that your anon was thinking along those lines, but it's really not appropriate in that table except for the King/Queen row, I think. · rodii · 21:13, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Generic image names[edit]

What do I do with images that have generic names, like Image:Soviet.jpg and Image:France.jpg? Alr 16:32, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing.--Commander Keane 17:02, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If these names are already in use, you shouldn't try to overwrite the images already there. Instead, if you are uploading a file with the same name, modify the file name in some way, perhaps by adding your Wikipedia username (or a shortened form thereof) to it (as I have done with Image:Pennine Way Sign Andh.jpg) or the width or height of the image in pixels. Copyright Issues[edit]

I want to upload a Google Earth image to illustrate an article about a building which is in the image.

Are they released into Public Domain?

Is is fair use?

I would be grateful if someone could clear this up for me

4dhayman 16:55, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The simple answer is that Google Earth images are commercial and cannot be used in Wikipedia. Nasa may have public domain alternative images on the internet, I'm not sure where to check.
That is not fair use.--Commander Keane 17:02, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
For copyright reasons, I wouldn't use Google Earth images in Wikipedia (though they do have copyright indications at the bottom). However, you may be able to use images from World Wind, NASA's free alternative. Andrew (My talk · World Cup) 18:04, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I was working through some of the articles for deletion and was looking at some of the articles promoting web sites. They often evidently fail WP:WEB but sometimes in the vote, alexa traffic rankings are used as implications of notability. If a website cannot be differentiated by WP:WEB or other means, what kind of traffic ranking would we consider notable? Do we have to take into account the whole "Alexa toolbar users only" thing? Anand 22:36, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WP:WEB is only a guideline. People are free to use it as a guideline to establish notability, but can use whatever criteria they choose if they feel its notable enough for some other reason. They have to be prepared to defend their reason, and a high traffic rank is usually a pretty easily defendable thing. If it shows in the top 100,000 websites (Which is what Alexa will show in graphs) you're probably not going to get an article that easily deleted unless there are other problems with it (OR, blatant advertisting, etc) at which point many people will call for clean-up rather than delete. --Crossmr 02:12, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • If you know of another way to reliably measure the amount of unqique visitors to a site, you're welcome to use that too. Alexa ranks may not be accurate when they are about sites not often visited by non-Alexa users, but with ranks over 2 or 3 million, it's usually pretty clear it hasn't got much visitors no matter how you measure it. - Mgm|(talk) 07:14, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Japanese names[edit]

I'm writing an article on a japanese person, however in the naming portion, I don't know how to write japanese symbols. Could someone please help? And also, how do you create new categories? --Summonmaster13 01:00 25 June 2006 (UTC)

The easiest way is if you can find it online, just copy and paste it. Otherwise, you'll need to use an IME. For Windows, you can download it someplace on the microsoft site, just search for Japanese IME. You'll also need asian character support installed. Look in control panel -> regional settings. That's just to see them at all, if you can see them, you have that part. If you're using Mac, OSX comes with built in support for writing Japanese I believe, you'd have to search the help to find out how to use it. Once IME is installed, it's a bit nonintuitive - you have to set it to writing in japanese, and there's a few settings, that I've never been able to read as I can't read Japanese, so I just click them til it works. When typing, every syllable you write will then convert into kana. If you want kanji, hit space while the right part is underlined (which it does as you type). -Goldom ‽‽‽ 01:29, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you are unsure about what Japanese characters to use, you can ask at Wikipedia:Japan-related topics notice board as well. To create a new category just include on a page you want in the new category. This will show up as a red category link, and then you can click this and add at least to the category (to link it in to the category structure). There are a LOT of categories, so you might want to look around and make sure the category you're creating doesn't already exist. Please see Wikipedia:Categorization for more details. -- Rick Block (talk) 01:48, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You probably don't want to cite that opinion as judge Sweet vacated it at least in part. To be more precise, in the published decision at (note the following citation format I use, which may help you with your question; I am a practicing attorney in New York, and this is how the published decision I am referring to would be cited in legal papers) Penguin Books U.S.A., Inc. v. New Christian Church ..., 2004 U.S. Dist. Note that the opinion you have linked to, dated July 21, 2000, is unsigned and is likely the referred to "opinion dated July 25, 2000." Since you probably don't have access to Lexis or Westlaw, drop me a line on my talk page if you want me to post the text of the published decision on your talk page.--Fuhghettaboutit 07:48, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Muse.svg[edit]

I created the image Image:Muse.svg yesterday from Muse Logo.png using Inkscape. I saved it as an "Inkscape SVG". It showed up perfectly on my computer using Inkscape and Internet Explorer. Thanks Mahahahaneapneap 11:50, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your file is just an SVG wrapper with a link to the original PNG image. If you think about it, that makes sense--there's no way Inkscape could look at the PNG bitmap and figure out how to redraw it in the vector format SVG uses. So you didn't really redo the Muse logo as SVG, you just created an SVG file that consists mainly of a pointer to the original image. And since the URL in that link is just "Muse.png" it won't work except from within one particular directory on whatever machine contains Muse.png. · rodii · 16:59, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Copyright logos in svg format can't be used in Wikipedia, since part of the fair use claim is that the image is low resolution (svgs are not low res).--Commander Keane 18:16, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I recently created an article, but it was labled as a copywright infringement, because I copied it from another website. I don't get what's wrong with that. Doesn't Wikipedia use the GFDL liscense?

GFDL means all information in wikipedia are published using GFDL only. However, information from other sources are licensed according to their copyright policy. So copying information directly from other sites and then paste it into Wikipedia is likely an copyright infringement. --WinHunter (talk) 16:17, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, Wikipedia uses the GFDL, but in all likelyhood the other site doesn't. Text that isn't released under a free license like the GFDL or a compatible Creative Commons license is not free. Copying it would basically be stealing from whoever wrote or owns the work. See Copyright (note the spelling) it's a about 'rights' not 'writing'. What that page does is it shows every change to every page linked to on the watchlist page. --GeorgeMoney (talk) (Help Me Improve!) 19:22, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting an image?[edit]

The article Drina is in need of a map. Is there a place to request an image (assuming it doesn't already exist)? Mo-Al 19:42, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed there is. See generally, Wikipedia:Requested pictures and, specifically for maps, Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps/Requested and orphan maps.--Fuhghettaboutit 19:50, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

spaces[edit]

Is there some kind of Wikipedia convention for articles concerning how many spaces should follow the period that ends a sentence? Thanks.

In HTML, any sequence of whitespace characters (including spaces) is collapsed to just one space. So it doesn't matter whether you use one or two spaces after a period in normal text, it will be rendered as one (which is the correct behavior). Check the source for this comment if you doubt me. · rodii · 23:31, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Also see Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Spaces after the end of a sentence. Like Rodii says, it doesn't matter so don't change any existing spacing. -- Rick Block (talk) 23:33, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Using two spaces behind a period is a leftover from typewriter times. Now that we have computers, we don't need it anymore. - Mgm|(talk) 07:32, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What template?[edit]

There is an article (specifically Knights of the Dinner Table) which both seems to contain factual inacuraccy, and (undisputably) contains plagiarism. How should it be tagged? Mo-Al 23:37, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Try using and . The first one is a boilerplate template, so place it at the start of the section/article in question. The second is for adding after an uncited "fact" in an article.
Make sure you're not treading on too many toes before adding the templates by checking the talk page of the article first.
EvocativeIntrigue 00:33, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What about for plagiarism? Mo-Al 00:49, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • If a section is plagiarized (not the entire article), you should not just tag it, but remove it and bring it up on the talk page. Make sure it's not a mere quotation first. - Mgm|(talk) 07:30, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Signature help[edit]

Thought I'd ask a question for once: I've rather cunningly managed to intercourse my signature coding up and can't seem to fix it. If anyone has some spare time, could you pop across to my user page and take a look at it please? There's just one very small problem with it which I can't seem to correct, and it's annoying the hell out of me.

I should have known not to play with it, it took me a while to fix the first time round!

Game images[edit]

How do I get video game screenshots? GEB-test 02:03, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Um, if you are using a computer press print screen on your keyboard. If it's on a TV, you'll need a camcorder and an AC cable (I think, I adress my camera's wires by color or absurd nicknames). If you need any help drop me a message. Yanksox (talk) 03:58, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You might want to try using Fraps, you can take as many screenshots as you want then without alt+tabbing back to Windows. They are automatically saved in compressed file formats, with the game name and time in the filename. I think you can do all those things with the free version, so you don't need to buy it unless you want all the fancy extras. Icey 12:22, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think that in most games you just press F12. Russian F 21:42, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article we created has disappeared[edit]

Hello, We created an article some weeks ago on Zak Martin, and it has now disappeared. Can you please tell us why this article was removed, and/or restore it? In addition to being the founder of our organization, Zak Martin is a leading New Age figure, author and antiwar activist. Our intention was to gradually add information to the biographical article we created. Now the original article has disappeared, and in its place is a page with the message "Wikipedia does not have an article with this name". Please advise. Lydia Lloyd-Spencer UK Psychics http://www.ukpsychics.com/

According to the deletion log the article was deleted for being a copy-vio. Meaning the contents of the page where copied from somewhere that didn't release the rights to it in standards with the GFDL. If you need anything drop a message. Yanksox (talk) 03:54, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A quick Googling does seem to suggest that the subject is notable per WP:BIO and WP:NN, and so if you should recreate the article in a fashion that does not infringe on copyright and is compliant with the GFDL, you should be good to go (in the alternative, if the text you added was from a webpage that either you or the organization with which you're affiliated has created and owns, the situation is slightly different, and you may surely prepare the article for recreation and then ask someone for help). Good editing! Joe 04:20, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How to find copy editors to help in achieving GA for car article?[edit]

How to find copy editors to help in achieving GA for an article? The article that I am refering to is Infiniti G20, which I have put up for Peer Review currently. At Peer Review, I have only gotten help from one fellow. Not that I am not thankful, however, I would like a few more minds on the task. Thanks. Zoli Elo 04:52, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You might like to join Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobiles and see if you can get anyone from there to help. Alternitively/in addition, you can add one or more of the templates found at Cleaning resources to the top of the page and someone will then know what needs to be done. Junk Article[edit]

I came across a really rubbishy article. Not sure where to bring it to anyone's attention:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Lee --Mylitta 08:08, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikifying and cleanup[edit]

What is the difference between wikifying and cleanup. SCHZMO 11:10, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup is more general, while to wikify is something more specific. From Wikipedia:Glossary#W: To format using Wiki markup (as opposed to plain text or HTML) and add internal links to material, incorporating it into the whole of Wikipedia. fetofs Hello! 11:32, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
To me "wikifying" is to add the two sets of square parentheses that create a link to another part of WP ,such as Boeing 747. To "clean up" is to correct spelling, grammar, unencyclopedic language, unacceptable links such as Forums, and so on. - Adrian Pingstone 12:17, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I believe "wikifying" refers more just to the use of wiki markup (e.g. titles use == rather than boldface). Mo-Al 15:21, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why has my entry been removed?[edit]

Last year, I made an addition to the entry for "bric-a-brac". In addition to the meaning that is there on the wikipedia, in sewing terms it's also a type of decorative trim. Today, on a whim I went there to read my entry and it's been removed. Why has this happened?—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Gankaku (talkcontribs) 12:57, 26 June 2006 (UTC).[reply]

I've had a look and it seems that a different editor disagreed with it being there. You have two (well three) options - (1) edit it back in, (2) discuss it on the talk page for that entry or (3) ask the user who removed it on their userpage the reasons behind their removal. I would recommend (2) & (3) first. The editor who removed your entry was Zora http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Zora and gave the reason "(Those are embroidered decorative tapes, not bric-a-brac)". You can see this for yourself by clicking on the button labeled "history" on the actual entrypage.

(it's also useful to sign stuff - by clicking the signature button (3rd button from the right).

--Charlesknight 13:02, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd recommend talking to User:Zora, it's usually faster than discussing it on the talk page, especially if there's only one user to deal with. SCHZMO 13:06, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
True, but Zora's on wikibreak right now, so he might not get a quick reply. Probably the best thing to do is re-add the information -- with a reliable source, ideally, and then watch the page and/or the talk page for discussion. -- Powers 13:28, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Have you loooked at our article on Boggle? If that doesn;t help you can try Wikipedia's Reference Desk. Deleting images?[edit]

What's the process to get images deleted? is it similar to AFD? I ask because

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Aniquity.jpg while the original work of this Alex Jackson would seems to misrepesent the existance of such a star trek series? (leaving aside his cheeky claim of copyright on Star Trek!) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Charlesknight (talkcontribs) 20:49, 26 June 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Charlesknight I haveremoved personal comments as they are libleous - the copyright for the image belongs to the author there were no claims to the ownership of Star Trek was or implied or stated!
Mark —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 212.1.151.51 (talkcontribs) 21:22, 12 August 2006 (UTC).[reply]
Please stop deleting other users' comments without permission. That comment is in no way libelous. However, as you seem so intent on making your point, I have restored the original comment but left your objection to it in place as well. Please do not remove the comment again, or I may have to issue a formal warning about removing content. Thank you. Road Wizard 20:57, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"leaving aside his cheeky claim of copyright on Star Trek" where does this Alex Jackson claim copyright on Star Trek? he does not therefore as the stament is untrue and visable by a wide audience it is libelous, regards Mark

There is a similar process, see WP:IFD. Prodego talk!

Deleting[edit]

I messed up on a page completely. How do i delete the whole thing?

If you messed up when editing an existing page, you should revert. See the text above the table of contents on the page WP:RV. If you messed up in creating a page, blank it (i.e., edit it, remove all content, and save the blank page) and then tell us here which it was.—msh210 22:58, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Or if you were the only editor to it, then you can just put db-author on it and an admin will delete it. --GeorgeMoney (talk) (Help Me Improve!) 23:38, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
