These files are not in use in any articles, and only appear in the page of a user who became inactive more than seven years ago, and they otherwise appear not to be useful, especially the second file. Peter O. (Talk) 01:33, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

In none of the articles where this is used does it meet NFCC 8. Sven Manguard Wha? 03:27, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep. NFCC8 states: "Contextual significance. Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding." The obvious and most important use is in the biography. AWW is a multi-media visual artist who has made important works. Other of his works are physical and can be easily captured in GFDL-compliant images, but photographic works cannot be, by definition. This is one of several similar works in this medium to protest the harassment and suppression by the central authorities; the nudity therein became an excuse for suppression and arrest on the grounds of "obscenity". All this is noted in the article. Therefore, I do not feel that use in the biography fails number 8. -- Ohc ¡digame! 03:23, 24 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • The image is used in three articles:
  • Homophonic puns in Mandarin Chinese: The image violates WP:NFCC#10c here, so it should be removed from the page. There is also no sourced critical discussion about the image, so it violates WP:NFCC#8 in this article. The image only seems to be mentioned in the image caption, but the image caption could easily be understood without displaying the image itself, so the image violates WP:NFCC#1 in this article.
  • Grass Mud Horse: Per c:COM:TOYS, it might not be possible to use any freely licensed images of grass mud horses in this article (unless it would acceptable to upload pictures of user-created grass mud horses, or unless old grass mud horses exist). However, the article doesn't need multiple images. Again, there is no sourced critical discussion about the image (only about its image caption), so the image is not needed for the purpose of displaying the image per se. The infobox image is more suitable to display the subject of the article, since the horse isn't surrounded by lots of other stuff. This image should therefore be removed from the article for violating WP:NFCC#8.
  • Ai Weiwei: There is no sourced critical discussion about the image (at least not in the section in which it is used), so the image violates WP:NFCC#8 here and should be removed from the article. --Stefan2 (talk) 12:43, 29 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am impressed that you found that image, and I'm glad to know where the image comes from (A pictorial biography of Andrew Jackson, by John Frost, pub. 1860). There are still problems with it, however. The image is an artist's rendering of a Creek Indian (in fact, a specific individual), but it appears to be based solely on the artist's imagination. Reasons: That headdress, some sort of beaded skull cap topped with waving ostrich plumes, appears unprecedented among any North American Indian group, much less among the Creeks, who did not use feather headdresses. The real Big Warrior (Tastanagi Tlako of Tukabatchee) appears in the documentary record often, dressed in a long cotton shirt, with a dyed cotton cloth wrapped around his hair like a turban, as was the fashion among Indian men in the South. He was also fat, unlike the figure pictured here. He would not have been seen with a bow and arrows because in the 1800s only Creek boys carried bows. Men hunted with guns. (Despite his name, Big Warrior never went to war.) Lastly, the image appeared 34 years after the subject's death, and it is not based on any known likeness made during his lifetime. So we have many reasons to be certain that this image was not a serious attempt to portray a likeness of the Creek political leader called Big Warrior.
I won't insist on deleting keeping it out of Commons if there are objections. But if the image is kept, its inadequacy as a portrait should be clearly indicated. — ob C. alias ALAROB 19:48, 26 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
