This article is about the first feature film directed by Satyajit Ray. This film is the first from India to enjoy international critical success and features in several lists of great films. The article has undergone a productive peer review, and then copyedit by User:stfg. I believe the article meets FA criteria. Dwaipayan (talk) 22:09, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A nice article on one of the best films to have ever been made. I have made a few tweaks myself, and am listing a few other points here:

Lead
  • As most readers will be unfamiliar with him, I would say "the author Darius Cooper".
  • Added the words "the author"
  • "Launched" sounds better than "heralded" in "..as it was among the films that heralded the Parallel Cinema movement".
  • Unsure which one is more appropriate, but changed it to launched.
  • They mean slightly different things. "Launched" means got it started; "heralded" implies it's imminent but hasn't yet started. --Stfg (talk) 22:31, 19 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well, cinema literature does not exactly define which exact film started the Parallel cinema movement. Obviously it is difficult to do so. Some traits of the movement were identified in films prior to Pather Panchali, but films that followed it were more notable for such traits (authenticity, realism). The source by Chidananda Dasgupta [2] (cited in the legacy section) uses the word "pioneer" for a set on Bengali films that pioneered the Parallel cinema movement. So, what do you suggest stfg is the most appropriate word in this case? Shall we use pioneer? Or, as in the legacy section, "helped to introduce"? Production
  • "The realist narrative style of Pather Panchali is indebted to Italian neorealism and the works of Renoir". How about "...was highly influenced by Italian neorealism.."?
  • Changed the construction to "influenced by"; did not use the adverb "highly".
  • "..inspired Ray to hope that Pather Panchali also might find an international audience". This is a bit awkward. How about saying that the success of the two films "... led Ray to believe that Pather Panchali would find an international audience"?
  • Changed.
  • In the casting sub-section, please wikilink "red light district".
  • Done.
  • Make sure that all currency data are consistently formatted. Use the rupee sign in the filming sub-section, as is done in the infobox.

  • In the filming sub-section: "Thanks to Huston's positive feedback.." Please change to "Due to Huston's..."
  • Changed to due to.
  • Soundtrack sub-section: "..but he was already familiar with the story". I presume he had read the novel.
  • Actually the source said that Ravi Shankar did not read the novel, but was familiar with the plot.
Release and reception
  • Again, "thanks to" is not very encyclopedic. Change to "due to" or something else.
  • Changed to due to; however, I think thanks to is not very un-encyclopedic!
  • "It went on to great success in the US in 1958, running for eight months at the Fifth Avenue Playhouse in New York". Missing 'achieve' before 'great'.
  • Hmmm, you are technically correct, but I think just "went on to great success" also conveys the same meaning. stfg (talk · contribs) may have some comment on this.

  • "one found "the magic horse of poetry ... invading the screen" Do we know who he/she was?
  • I will try to find out this.

Legacy
  • Why start legacy by mentioning the 2013 film? I would change the placement to the end of the first paragraph.
  • Guilty as charged :) It's quite difficult to find an ideal place for this sentence, for the reason I gave, but I have no objection to Krimuk90's suggestion. --Stfg (talk) 22:31, 19 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Closing comment -- I share Graham's disappointment that this hasn't attracted more interest, but unfortunately one supportive review after almost six weeks does not a promotion make so I'll be archiving it shortly. Given the lack of review, I've no objection to a renomination in less than the usual two weeks but I'd suggest leaving it till after the weekend at least, when the FAC list should be a bit shorter after a few more imminent closures.
