Nominator's rationale: To match the parent Category:Squares and plazas by continent. Laurel Lodged (talk) 16:40, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Query @Oculi: So are you proposing an alternative such as Category:Town squares in Africa etc ? Laurel Lodged (talk) 18:06, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Personally I would prefer it if all the categories were renamed "Squares" and the overall category was renamed Category:Squares by continent. Why are we singling out plazas when there are many words used in different languages? "Square" is a generic term in English for any formally laid-out urban open space, whatever it is actually called (and most of them are not square). Even in Spanish-speaking countries they are not all called plazas. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:23, 16 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reply "Why are we singling out plazas" - the whole point of the nomination is not to single out plazas. The whole point is to give it a more encyclopedic feel and for it to be less Anglo-centric. It acknowledges that each of the two terms is valid and common in their respective locations. Why use "squares in South America when they're called plazas? The category needs to embrace both. Laurel Lodged (talk) 15:06, 16 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Equally, why use squares in Germany when they're called Plätze? Why use the term in France when they're called Places? I could go on and on. So, I ask again, why are we singling out plazas? Why is Spanish being given special treatment? Better to just use the generic English term for all of them. Or do you want [[:Category:Squares, plazas, piazzas, plätze, places [ad infinitem] in Europe]]? -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:38, 17 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is the English Wiki. No need for other languages. Plaza is a common term in English; the others are not. Laurel Lodged (talk) 12:42, 17 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • However, "square" is the standard term, so there is no need for any other. -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:43, 18 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. We don't need 'plazas'. Keep it simple and crisp - as a rule! --Just N. (talk) 21:07, 19 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose per above rationale. Each should be 'Town squares' per Town square, Category:Town squares; these are speedies (C2C, C2D). Oculi (talk) 17:23, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Square should indeed be changed to Town square per the article and category. That said, there are some categories, such as Category:Plazas in Madrid, Category:Plazas in Manila and Category:Plazas in Mexico City, that use "plaza". Gonnym (talk) 11:41, 18 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Comment having both "square" and "plaza" in the category title permits widespread local usage. Otherwise all "plazas" would have to be shoehorned into squares. Laurel Lodged (talk) 18:07, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine for the "by country" and "by continent" categories, but local usage in New Zealand is for "square". Grutness...wha? 03:34, 16 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: More inclusive. Each of its 3 sub-categories is entitled "Squares and plazas by ...". Laurel Lodged (talk) 15:23, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Comment While the current name may be consistent with its main article name, the contents of the category contains no such consistency as all varieties of square / plaza / piazza / civic space / urban space etc is on display. Perhaps the real problem lies with the article name. But that's a discussion for a different forum. Laurel Lodged (talk) 18:12, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - per Thincat and WP:C2D. Oculi (talk) 17:18, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per key article - the subcategories cater for local usages, but given their scope they could possibly also be changed to "Squares". Grutness...wha? 02:44, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Comment the proposal better caters for local usage seeing as the proposed name contains two of the most popular variants. Laurel Lodged (talk) 18:12, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Reply Please assume GoodFaith @Justus Nussbaum:. I created none of the 3 sub-categories which are all entitled "Squares and plazas by ...". Yet they exist, so it's illogical for the parent to differ. Either the parent or the children must change. Laurel Lodged (talk) 15:09, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete This category has been nominated for deletion for almost two weeks now. I feel like we should have reached a consensus by now. I did not know this was going to be an issue or I never would have made(maid) the category. I say delete it until Band-Maid has enough pages to justify having this category. yawaraey (talk) 22:00, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale Series of misnamed, single-user categories covering topics that are, in most cases, of questionable collaborative value. A merge of the first to Category:Wikipedians in Alaska as well is not necessary since the user is already in that category. A merge of the last category to the Category:Wikipedians by interest tree is not appropriate since it is populated by Template:Alaska State Troopers, which does not express a Wikipedia-relevant interest in the subject. * Pppery * it has begun... 13:28, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
