The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Sportswriters from Massachusetts, for now. The rename makes sense, but there's no indication that anyone's willing to do that work. And certainly we don't want just the Massachusetts sportswriters having a state category and no others. Comment - The parent category contains 479 articles. I think that's more than enough to merit subcategories. I think it's an open question as to how best to subcategorize (by city, by metro area, by state, by region, by sport(s) covered, etc.; metro area or region might be best?), but there is no question in my mind that the parent category would benefit from subcategories. cmadler (talk) 12:52, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rename to Category:Sportswriters from Massachusetts and populate. This style parallels that of Category:American journalists by state ("American journalists" being an ancestor to "American sportswriters") and provides a scheme for subcategorization of the rest of Category:American sportswriters. - There is already a parent category, Category:Heritage registers. This includes historic buildings from many different countries, which are classified in many different ways. It seems strange to group the British and Swedish buildings together simply because they use the same designation (especially since the Swedish term, byggnadsminne, doesn't really seem to translate as "listed building" in any case - more like "heritage building"). -- Necrothesp (talk) 17:31, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm rethinking this one. I see that Listed building is specifically about the UK listing. Is there any other country that actually uses this term to refer to a heritage register of this sort? If not, I don't see why it can't stay as is. cmadler (talk) 18:04, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- For exactly the reason that the Swedish category (incorrectly) uses the term "listed buildings". Although it's the official term in the UK, the phrase is too generic to be used without a geographical qualifier. Rename: Rename to a title incorporating “United Kingdom”. Is it worthwhile moving all the articles and categories in Category:Heritage registers to a a subcategory for each country eg Category:Heritage registers of the United Kingdom? The category Category:Heritage registers is a subcategory of Category:Historic sites which has country subcategories eg Category:Historic sites in the United Kingdom. “Historic sites” covers both buildings and sites eg Parks, Battlefields, Rivers etc. PS: I don’t think it would be anticipating the results of the discussion to move Hospitalfield House to Category:Listed buildings in Scotland as it is lonely in Category:Listed buildings?

The result of the discussion was: procedural close. Nothing here is tagged, and renaming 190+ categories without notifying anyone is not okay. The internet is quite conflicted on whether or not there's a hyphen in the adjectival form, so Wikipedia can decide to use whichever it wants. It would be nice if it were consistent, and the tide on Wikipedia seems like it is turning toward use of the hyphen. Is your goal to reverse the heirarchy of the existing cats so that Percy Jackson & the Olympians is the main cat one while each series (Camp Half-Blood series and The Heroes of Olympus) are underneath it? Object -- The fact that there are 'now' no categories for Rockhampton, Gloucestershire does not imply that there never will be. Furthermore, it is always desirable to include the state or county in category names, to prevent them picking up articles for other places of the same name. Thus the categories for "Birmingham" (the article title) are at "Birmingham, England", so that they do not inadvertently pick up categories for "Birmingham, AL". Support So many of these categories appear together on the same article pages, because it is not unusual for any one head coach to have held a half dozen assistant coach positions and two or three head coach positions in a career. As a project we want the category classifications to be the same for all college football programs, and the clear majority of the active project members would not like to see the major category of football coaches for particular colleges further subdivided into head coaches and assistant coaches. Support. This is an unneeded layer of navigation. When I open up Category:Michigan Wolverines football coaches, I expect to see Bo Schembechler. I sure don't want him only in a head coaches category, and I don't want him in both a head coaches category and a coaches category.
