Category:MusiCares Person of the Year Honorees (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: Overcategorization - per WP:OC#AWARD: "People can and do receive awards and/or honors throughout their lives. In general (though there are a few exceptions to this), recipients of an award should be grouped in a list rather than a category." Seems to be a rather minor award, though kind of difficult (or, not) to tell by the main article, since it's just a stub CutOffTies (talk) 23:18, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The award is a major award. It is awarded to a Recording artist who has contributed significantly to music and has also made significant philanthropy contributions. It is one of the biggest awards the recording academy hands out. It is very significant, just as significant as a Lifetime achievement award. The MusiCares award is presented at a black tie dinner event two nights before the Grammy awards. It raises money for MusiCares and other charities associated with the honoree. --MusicGeek101 (talk) 23:23, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

::Withdrawn - I apologize, I went to the basic MusiCares link rather than the MusiCares Person of the Year link, so my impression of the award was off. --CutOffTies (talk) 23:25, 31 August 2011 (UTC)}}[reply]

  • Delete I still think it should be deleted, and the nomination not withdrawn, as far I'm concerned. It's a philanthropic award. While admirable, it's not indicative of excellence in a chosen field nor is is defining for one's career imo and I don't believe it meets WP:OC#AWARD. The fact that it is presented at a "black tie dinner event" and raises money for a cause is beside the point.Shawn in Montreal (talk) 00:08, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. I agree with User:Shawn in Montreal that this award fails WP:OC#AWARD and is not defining for a person's career. Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:38, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete – admirable etc etc but not defining. Occuli (talk) 13:41, 2 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Propose renaming Category:Non-combat military operations involving the Germany to Category:Non-combat military operations involving Germany
Nominator's rationale: Grammatical error? Hugo999 (talk) 22:39, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've tagged it for a speedy rename - this doesn't need a week-long discussion. –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 04:46, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: WP:OCAT. Three of the five articles are up for prod but either way I just don't feel there's enough here. Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Otters want attention) 20:36, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Rename all. Timrollpickering (talk) 13:05, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Propose renaming Category:Spokespeople to Category:Spokespersons
Propose renaming Category:Government spokesmen of France to Category:Government spokespersons of France
Propose renaming Category:Government spokesmen of Hungary to Category:Government spokespersons of Hungary
Propose renaming Category:Taliban spokesmen to Category:Taliban spokespersons
Nominator's rationale: This debate on Category:Spokesmen was closed before it could get started. The plural of Spokesperson that I see most often is "spokespersons," not "spokespeople". Then again, Merriam Webster Online acknowledges "spokespeople" exists. Worth discussing, anyway.-- Mike Selinker (talk) 14:15, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Speedy merge C2D. Timrollpickering (talk) 12:08, 2 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Propose merging Category:Forensics speech and debate to Category:Public speaking
Nominator's rationale: "Forensics" is an little-used synonym for public speech and debate, and Forensics (public speaking) redirects to public speaking. The various organizations grouped in this category could be moved into a new Category:Public speech and debate organizations or similar.  Sandstein  12:38, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Noticed this while cleaning out the Raw category after closing Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2011 August 24, and I don't see any reason for this one, given the prior deletion. Courcelles 11:14, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Category:IOC Session Host Cities (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Category:Olympic Congress Host Cities (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: Delete. I believe this is overcategorization of city by event. Cities host so many different events that it does not make sense to categorize the cities by the events they have hosted. A list for these is available at List of IOC meetings. Good Ol’factory (talk) 09:31, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Delete. Agreed. Jared Preston (talk) 13:27, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Another case of overcategorization by this editor. Major cities will host a myriad of international conferences. Hosting an IOC session or congress merits a list only. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 01:40, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguate between gender of coed sports per WP:NCCAT. NThomas (talk) 09:20, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Don't rename. There is no men's volleyball team at Texas Tech. –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 17:12, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • The way soccer and basketball are set up, regardless if there are gender specific categories, all are classified as either men's or women's. NThomas (talk) 00:36, 3 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename. Better to disambiguate as we do for basketball and soccer.--Mike Selinker (talk) 23:28, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Monk[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Rename to Category:Monk (TV series). Timrollpickering (talk) 02:13, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Propose renaming Category:Monk to Category:Monk (franchise) or Category:Adrian Monk
Nominator's rationale: Rename. This category is about the novel series and TV series, and it not the principal meaning of Monk (see also Monk (disambiguation)). It could be named with a "(franchise)" disambiguator, or it could be named after the character Adrian Monk. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:16, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
