Category:Fictional tadpoles[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:43, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Suggest merging Category:Fictional tadpoles to Category:Fictional frogs and toads
Nominator's rationale: Upmerge, only one entry, unlikely to expand to a worthwhile category. In the illustration it looks like a frog anyway. Fayenatic (talk) 22:14, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Gotta agree, this category certainly isn't needed -- especially when the one article even uses the word "tadpole" in its name. So upmerge per nom. I think it's also worth noting that there's no Category:Fictional larvae, which would be the obvious parent cat, nor any other categories that I'm aware for other specific types of animal in the larval stage. However, if somehow kept, I'd really prefer to call it Category:Fictional polliwogs, don't you think? (such an enchanting word...) Cgingold (talk) 23:19, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Eggs[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: keep as parent cat for all manner of egg-related-funnery. Feel free to create missing subcats as supported by articles. Kbdank71 15:39, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Eggs (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

  • "scrambled up"? Men have been hanged for less! Otto4711 (talk) 23:53, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Don't you mean "fried"?? Cgingold (talk) 21:18, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, no, I was quoting dialogue from Bette Davis in All About Eve, for which film the crew presented her with a "Good Egg Award". See, my mind works on levels most can't even begin to contemplate. Otto4711 (talk) 22:28, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • That's a darn good question. I wasn't sure what to do with that, so I left it there for the time being. They are egg-shaped, of course, but beyond that... ?? Cgingold (talk) 13:18, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as a parent for Eggs (food), Eggs in culture, Fictional eggs, and scientific articles on egg white, egg yolk and eggshell. Might as well bring Oology back in too; that would provide a nav link to those articles, which is currently absent. - Fayenatic (talk) 14:08, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Questions: the proposed Category:Eggs (food) should be defined broadly enough to cover packaging and distribution of eggs as food. Is it broad enough to cover eggs in drinks? Does it properly cover edible imitation eggs such as Cadbury Creme Egg and Mini Eggs (I would say yes), or are they eggs in culture, or both? - Fayenatic (talk) 14:08, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Never mind. Having never seen a case like this before, I wasn't aware that categories generally have to be more specific. Ten Pound Hammer and his otters • (Broken clamshellsOtter chirpsHELP) 19:16, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: The parent article is Washington, no qualifier, and has been at that title for quite some time. I don't want to go through all the subcategories here, but they should all be renamed to just "Washington" instead of "Washington (US state)" to match the parent article. There is already a hatnote in the category to direct anyone to Category:Washington, D.C., so I don't think any confusion could result. Ten Pound Hammer and his otters • (Broken clamshellsOtter chirpsHELP) 17:24, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong Keep surely this has come up endlessly before. "I don't think any confusion could result" Get real! Johnbod (talk) 18:01, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • That is very often the case where confusion would result, and well-established by precedent here. Johnbod (talk) 18:02, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Wall Street Journal Editorial Board (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

  • Delete (upmerge articles to Category:Wall Street Journal people). No doubt that the WSJ Editorial Board is influential, but this strikes me as too narrow a slice to serve as a category. I suspect that what accounts for this category's creation is the fact that they have a degree of visibility because they make appearances on a weekly television roundtable, as noted in the intro for the the main article -- which, I might add, also has a complete list of these individuals. (Category creator not notified: blocked as sockpuppet.) Cgingold (talk) 14:12, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Upmerge - while the vague "Foo people" categorization scheme may not be optimal, splitting off people based on a particular corporate position is untenable. People routinely occupy multiple positions within a particular corporation. Otto4711 (talk) 10:09, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Propose renaming merging Category:Argentinian ballet dancers to Category:Argentine ballet dancers
Nominator's rationale: Rename merge. Several times we've considered the issue of alternate adjectives for people from Argentina and each time we've decided to make them all consistent with the parent Category:Argentine people. Many precedents but most recent one here. Good Ol’factory (talk) 05:35, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename Per nom. The Argentina page lists the denoym as Argentine. Lugnuts (talk) 12:51, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Soccer prospects (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Category:Global Football Monitor 2009 (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: Delete. These categories were all created by the same user and the same single article (Jon Lemmon) was included in all of them. It appears to be some sort of effort to promote the article about the soccer player in question. Calling a soccer prospect "highly rated" is POV, of course, and the other ones just smack of advertising. I'm not sure if "Global Football Monitor" is something that is real or made up, but WP has no article about it. Good Ol’factory (talk) 05:16, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete "Global Football Monitor 2009" as an empty category. Delete rest as POV categories, and probably WP:ADVERT for Jon Lemmon. Peterkingiron (talk) 14:23, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all - a 24-year old is no longer a 'prospect' anyway. Occuli (talk) 15:08, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Category:People who have shoplifted (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: Delete. Not defining for anyone. A shoplifting incident may be important enough to include in a biographical article about someone, but it doesn't rise to the defining level of "needs-a-category." Reminiscent of "people who have been arrested" and others. Good Ol’factory (talk) 05:12, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Delete Category which consisted only of cruft and has been depopulated from merging. Contains only one article, the list of objects. ZXCVBNM (TALK) 01:52, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. If you remove all the articles that are not actually eggs, you are left with a very small category that is not likely to grow. Books about eggs are not fictional eggs, they are books. Kbdank71 15:48, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Fictional eggs (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: Delete Useless category, there are only one or two articles that actually belong in it, and it's not notable. ZXCVBNM (TALK) 01:42, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • And one, the Cadbury Creme Egg is not fictional at all. — AjaxSmack 01:48, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't know - it would be difficult to describe Humpty Dumpty without mentioning 'egg' and so he should be in an 'egg' based category (defining characteristic). Occuli (talk) 13:37, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sorry, but doesn't that amount to Original Research? Isn't this just your interpretation of an "in-universe" characteristic? :) And on a more serious note: Should this be the parent cat for Category:Fictional chickens? Or should it be the other way around?? Uh, oh... Cgingold (talk) 20:31, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oh man, I loved "The Enormous Egg" as a kid. But unless there were articles specifically about the eggs within the stories they shouldn't be in a fictional eggs category. Otto4711 (talk) 23:52, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
and it is now well-populated. - Fayenatic (talk) 21:03, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
a parallel case is Category:Fictional hares and rabbits. Historicist (talk) 20:31, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - small category with no reasonable likelihood of proper expansion. The various works of fiction that have been shoehorned into this category should be removed if the category is kept. Categorizing works of fiction on the basis of Foos that appear in them is unworkable and keeping this category for the purposes of housing such articles sets a terrible precedent. Such articles turn the category into Category:Fictional works that are about eggs or Category:Fictional works that include eggs and we routinely delete that sort of category. The fictional rabbits category, on a parallel note, needs to be purged of such articles as well. The Easter Bunny is a fictional rabbit. Here Comes Peter Cottontail is a film in which fictional rabbits appear but it is not itself a fictional rabbit. Humpty Dumpty is a fictional egg. Through the Looking-Glass is a book in which a fictional egg appears but is not itself a fictional egg. Adopting this categorization scheme would lead to every element in a work of fiction being categorized separately. Imagine the dozens if not hundreds of categories that could end up on something like Through the Looking-Glass. Everything from fictional rabbits and eggs to fictional cats and playing cards to fictional cabbages and kings. If there are suddenly a slew of articles that are actually about fictional eggs rather than articles and redirects for works of fiction that include a fictional egg, then recreate the category at that time. Otto4711 (talk) 17:19, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
* Have to agree with all Otto's points ... Occuli (talk) 17:45, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Reply: What, all of them "should be removed"? Let's be specific. I added some works of fiction to this category not because of original research that eggs "appear in them", but that eggs are in the title and are clearly central to the plot. If there were separate articles for the eggs that appear in The Fatal Eggs and The Pinhoe Egg, these would clearly be categorised in Fictional eggs. However, there is no case for such articles and if they existed, they would rightly be merged and redirected to the articles on the works. It therefore seems to me entirely permissible and helpful to categorise the articles on these works in Fictional eggs. No-one has categorised Through the Looking-Glass in this category, but at least some of the current population should remain in it. Apart from WP:IDONTLIKEIT, why not, really? - Fayenatic (talk) 14:08, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Um, I didn't say I don't like the category, and I suppose it's just as easy to dismiss your comments with a link to WP:ILIKEIT. Eggs are in the title - which equals overcategorization on the basis of shared name, also something we don't do. are clearly central to the plot - so we should put Green Eggs and Ham in Category:Fictional pigs because of the central role of ham to the story? Again, we routinely delete categories that capture works of fiction by elements that appear within the fiction, and using this category to capture stories with eggs in them (and some only barely at that) is an end-run around that consensus. Imagine the clutter on something like Just So Stories if we did that, with all of its central plot elements categorized individually. Otto4711 (talk) 16:56, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think you are again comparing like with unlike. There's a difference between ham and pigs, which is not there between eggs and eggs. I populated the category following several early comments that supported its retention. Even if it doesn't survive, at least I had fun doing it. I do agree that if it's not kept, the only alternative is a straight delete; there is case to listify. - Fayenatic (talk) 21:36, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • There is also a difference between a book and an egg. What you're categorizing here for the most part is books that have eggs in them (to whatever degree), not actual fictional eggs. Otto4711 (talk) 22:35, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • My oh my, you certainly did have fun, Fayenatic -- perhaps a bit too much fun! :) After seeing what's in the category now, it occurred to me that we might want to consider turning it into an omelette and rename it to "Cat:Eggs in fiction". But all in all, I think it would be best to keep the current name -- and restrict it to those books & stories where eggs are, in fact, principal characters. As Otto suggests, however, we should remove those articles with only a tenuous connection, like Green Eggs and Ham and The Child who came from an Egg, in neither of which are the eggs actually characters. Cgingold (talk) 00:03, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oops, I accidentally smashed it... But I don't understand why you would restrict it to characters; it's not as if eggs are normally things that one can interact with. It would seem daft to me to have a category:Fictional eggs and not include Golden egg. - Fayenatic (talk) 18:46, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Despite users adding many articles to this cat in the last few days, it's still a "useless category, there are only one or two articles that actually belong in it, and it's not notable." It's narrow and likely always to be small. — AjaxSmack 06:00, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Simply put, this is a random collection of articles. Many of the items in here are because they appear in print and are in some manner egg related. I could be persuaded to maybe keep if we were talking about actual named fictional eggs like Humpty Dumpty. But then we are probably into the area of OCAT for that. Vegaswikian (talk) 23:10, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete WP:OC#SMALL. Of the 19 articles currently in the category, at most 5 or 6 are really about fictional eggs and belong in the category, and of those 3 are redirects. As noted already by Otto, including stories and books in this category makes it the equivalent of Category:Works that include eggs and sets a poor precedent for categorization of works of fiction (and non-fiction) by the objects that they mention; limiting the category to works that include "egg" in the title is overcategorization by shared name. –Black Falcon (Talk) 02:40, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Boundary of Greater Nepal (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: Delete — This category is underpopulated and is quite small or narrow. It appears it might have been created as a content fork of the Greater Nepal article since it contains mainspace-type text on that subject. I have copied the text of the category to Talk:Greater Nepal to preserve it for potential mainspace use. — AjaxSmack 01:09, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete A category such as this would be better named Category:Greater Nepal and be used to categorise places within the area claimed. However, I suspect that the areas in question are quite happy as part of India and will object to being so categorised. They might be listified in the main article, but I guees they are already mentioned in it. Peterkingiron (talk) 14:17, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Propose renaming Category:Biographies (books) to Category:Biographies
Nominator's rationale: Rename. This would be to most common meaning. If we have biographies in other media, they can be added as subcategories, say Category:Biographies (film). If kept, should it be renamed to Category:Biographies (book)? Vegaswikian (talk) 00:37, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It sounds better if it's plural. Versus22 talk 19:28, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • "books" seems clearer & more natural. Johnbod (talk) 17:50, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Johnbod. The main Biographies is fairly large, and it would be better off keeping it like this. Versus22 talk 19:28, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
