Category:Members of the Anointed Quorum (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: Listify and delete. This category is for membership in the early Latter Day Saint movement's short-lived Anointed Quorum, which was essentially composed of those deemed most faithful and therefore were the first individuals to participate in the Latter Day Saint temple rituals. This may sound important, but it's actually quite a minor point of LDS history. As one user has pointed out on the talk page, it is very difficult to find membership in this group even mentioned in biographies of any of the included people. As a reflection of this, membership hasn't been prominent enough to be mentioned in most of the WP articles on the people. As such, membership in the group could not be considered defining for any of the people—they are all notable for other reasons that have to do with the Latter Day Saint movement. No official or public list of the group ever existed when it was active from 1842–1845, and it has been left up to historians to piece together the membership, so lists have been created in modern times by historians of the Latter Day Saint movement. I suggest that this topic would be ideally covered by simply adding a list of members to the short article Anointed Quorum. I would be happy to undertake that effort. Propose renaming of Category:Nicknamed groups of soccer teams to To be determined

Nominator's rationale: Listed are groups of players at a club at a particular time who were given nicknames that had currency in national or international media reporting. Aside from the missing disambiguate 'football', I really don t know what the name should be. The current name however seems too ambiguous Mayumashu (talk) 18:41, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm. Category:Nicknamed generations in soccer teams catches it better, but still sounds a bit odd. Johnbod (talk) 20:43, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete I'm not convinced that this is a legitimate category at all. It seems to be grouping unrelated articles about football teams together simply on the basis of their having a nickname of one type or another. 62.41.28.66 (talk) 11:55, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd certainly disagree with that. I've looked at most, & the all seem to be genuine Golden Generations - unfortunately that name seems a little too obscure & ambiguous for a category. Category:Golden Generations in soccer teams might do it. Gre-No-Li, with only 3 members might be a bit different. All the ones I've looked at are only in their club/national team category and this one. Johnbod (talk) 01:10, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Even if we consider these "Golden Generations" teams, that term seems to me to be too POV and subjective to be amenable to categorization. This looks like list-cruft (no offence with the "cruft"; I just mean list "stuff"), but not a category. Otherwise we're just categorizing by a POV judgment call by somebody (it's not clear who, exactly) that these teams were extra special and so had a catchy nickname that collectively probably do not have any significance when the individual articles are cross-compared. So why even have the category? Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:15, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That issue is dealt with by the notability of the individual articles, and is not an argument for here. This is the only category, apart from the individual team ones, grouping these articles, and should therefore be allowed per WP:OCAT. These articles are only about the nicknames. The UK ones are highly notable, I can assure you. Categorization is not about "significance when the individual articles are cross-compared" - many categories would not meet that test? At the very least they should be listified. Johnbod (talk) 13:31, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't think I was making a notability argument at all. I was arguing that it's more of a categorization by shared name (or shared POV judgment call) than anything else. I have no concerns about notability and the existence of the articles themselves. I just question the appropriateness of grouping them together, since they share nothing in common except a POV judgment that somehow they are extra-special in the context of the country's football history and therefore deserve a catchy nickname. Good Ol’factory (talk) 20:33, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
See above; this is essentially a notability argument, and not for here. Johnbod (talk) 13:31, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Delete East Germany only ever had one airline - Interflug. Having a category for a single airline is rather pointless, a single category "Defunct airlines of Germany" is sufficient and already exists. Passportguy (talk) 19:15, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Delete See above Passportguy (talk) 19:15, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge to Category:Defunct airlines of Germany as their appears to be no navigation benefit to distinguishing by East or West. Alansohn (talk) 20:36, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as a part of a series, Category:Airlines of defunct states. If the proposal is to delete this or to merge, then the nomination should be directed at Category:West Germany. If that category exists, then it is reasonable to have subcategories especially when they are parts of a series. Vegaswikian (talk) 03:23, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • I should add that this is not a single entry category as the nomination implies. Vegaswikian (talk) 03:34, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Procedural Close I don't see nom's rationale, Interflug is not a West German airline, so no rationale was given for this request. Further, there is more than one airline in the category already, showing that the rationale suggested is even less appropriate. 76.66.194.58 (talk) 05:53, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as a part of a series, Category:Airlines of defunct states. (There was a considerable difference between E and W Germany.) Occuli (talk) 17:19, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Delete "West Germany" is not a "defunct state"; the GDR dissolved and joined the FRG. Canada did not become a new state after Newfoundland joined, nor India because of Sikkim, nor the U.S. after Vermont, etc. -choster (talk) 19:30, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • I strongly oppose the deletion or merging of this category with that as the reason. If your point is correct, then the parent category needs to be nominated and discussed. Picking and choosing here is not reasonable. If the parent is deleted, then all of the sub categories can be deleted. If the parent category remains then the subcategories should remain. At best this suggestion is premature. I'll also add that deleting the parent category while the main article still exists is not likely to gain much traction. So maybe you need to start trying to get the main article deleted. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:39, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge to Category:Defunct airlines of Germany. Per Choster, "West Germany" is not a defunct state; it's a defunct name for a state that still exists, with the same official name. The reason I suggest a merger rather than deletion is that airlines that went defunct in West Germany are still defunct airlines and the country they went defunct in is still Germany, so they do belong in the broader category. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 01:13, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • keep as part of a series Category:Airlines of defunct states and as a subcat of Category:West Germany, which contrary to the assertions above, is a subcat of Category:Former countries in Europe. Hmains (talk) 22:44, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per Choster, who is plainly correct on the "former" issue - it was always the Federal Republic of Germany, as it is now. There may be a case for keeping some articles, like the "borders of" sub-cat in the West German cats, but not these airlines. Johnbod (talk) 01:45, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

international football (soccer) category pages missing disambiguate '(soccer)'[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Rename --Philosopher Let us reason together. 17:13, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Propose renaming
Nominator's rationale: recently the use of the disambiguate '(soccer)' for category pages that refer to the sport internationally was reasserted (in a nomination discussion of replacing the disambiguate with 'association football'). These pages are missing the disambiguate Mayumashu (talk)
  • Comment If we are always disambiguating the term as "Football (soccer)", then by all means I support the proposal. If we are doing this, we should handle all of the soccer categories, rather than dealing with them on a piecemeal basis, though it appears that the nominator made an effort to include the ambiguous categories. If the goal is to disambiguate only where needed, "Football managers" is the term used for soccer, while the term "head coach" or "coach" is used in Category:American football head coaches and Category:American football coaches for American football. I have no objection to infixing "(soccer)". Alansohn (talk) 19:05, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Since you mentioned it (and because I'm a dangling modifier lover), I'll note the ambiguity of "American football coaches". Surely it's supposed to mean "people who coach American football, regardless of their nationality", but it could just as easily mean "Americans who coach some form of 'football' (even soccer…)". — CharlotteWebb 21:56, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Actually I see this has already been recognized in regard to Category:Players of American football. I'll probably nominate the coach categories for a similar renaming tomorrow unless somebody else does meanwhile. — CharlotteWebb 22:02, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename per nom. IMHO the current category names imply that generic "football" in WP means association football, but football covers all sports called football (word), which lest we forget include not just American football, but the Canadian, Gaelic, and Australian rules varieties, and sometimes rugby as well.-choster (talk) 03:52, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename per nom. But not all football/soccer categories need renaming - those for countries like England, Germany, Brazil etc where the plain name is locally unambiguous should be just football. Johnbod (talk) 14:46, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Could some one please tell the Americans that only they play American football and to every one else "Football" (without qualification) measn soccer? Peterkingiron (talk) 23:50, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Propose renaming Category:Monospace typefaces to Category:Monospaced typefaces
Nominator's rationale: per the recent move of Monospace font to Monospaced font (based on the fact that the grammar of the latter is correct and that of the former is not). -- Evertype· 17:08, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Shouldn't it be Category:Monospaced fonts to match the main article? Otto4711 (talk) 05:44, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was treading lightly, just fixing the grammar on both of these articles by adding the -d. As it happens "font" and "typeface" are not entirely synonymous. From Typeface: "The term typeface is frequently conflated with font; the two terms had more clearly differentiated meanings before the advent of desktop publishing. The current distinction between font and typeface is that a font designates a specific member of a type family such as roman, boldface, or italic type, while typeface designates a consistent visual appearance or style which can be a "family" or related set of fonts. For example, a given typeface such as Arial may include roman, bold, and italic fonts. In the metal type era, a font also meant a specific point size, but with digital scalable outline fonts this distinction is no longer valid, as a single font may be scaled to any size." -- Evertype· 08:22, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Propose renaming Category:Scottish Sports Hall of Fame to Category:Scottish Sports Hall of Fame inductees
Nominator's rationale: as per the norm for cat pages that list inductees of a sport(s) hall of fame Mayumashu (talk) 02:16, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, per several other subcats of Category:Sports halls of fame. Although I note that only a minority of those subcats appear to conform to the "... inductees" format - maybe a mass-nom is merited? I note that the alternate "... members" appears to be used by at least one sub-cat, but this is inappropriate for the SSHF, as the body itself uses the word "inductees": http://www.sshf.co.uk/ (Note to closing admin: I believe that the proposer has a wee typo there, and meant to spell it "inductees".)--Mais oui! (talk) 10:11, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support The category is primarily including articles about inductees (the preferred spelling), not the HoF itself. Alansohn (talk) 17:33, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: withdrawn by nominator. The more I have read up on this award over the past day or so the more inclined I am to think that it's more "prestigious" and notable than I had been suggesting. I'm fine with keeping this as an award category. (I'm a little surprised that the WP article does not better reflect the nature of this award.) Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:03, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Ivor Novello Award winners (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: Listify and delete. My interpretation is that this is classic overcategorization by award recipient. The award is not "career defining" (a vague judgment call, I know) and is nowhere near the status of the Nobels, Academy Awards, or even the Grammys (though there are those who have disagreed with this). The article Ivor Novello Award has remained quite small over the months. I propose converting this category into a list of winners. This category was nominated for essentially the same reasons in 2006, but it was closed as "keep". Perhaps the development of what is understood to be award overcategorization since this time will change the result here. Good Ol’factory (talk) 02:02, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - normally I'm strongly in favor of listifying and deleting awards categories but looking through the results of a Google search it does appear that this award is prestigious and is frequently mentioned in sources about its recipients. Appears to rise to the prestige level that would justify a category. Otto4711 (talk) 02:30, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Otto - the poor state of the article is not reflective of the importance of the award within the music industry. Furthermore, the phrases "the Ivor Novello award winning" / "the Ivor Novello award winner" are frequently used in discussing recipients in newspapers and on websites. Bencherlite (from my non-admin account Bencherheavy (talk)) 12:05, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep A notable and strong defining characteristic that is unique in the music industry in recognizing songwriting, rather than performing. While I strongly disagree with the completely subjective and arbitrarily-high bar set on including only those awards that are equivalent to a Nobel Prize, the Ivor is an award that deserves to be categorized. Category:Divisions[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Divisions (military units), mainly because the groups discussion was closed by adopting the parenthetical. But as nominator has stated, an additional discussion can take place if someone is unhappy with this name as opposed to some of the other options. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:42, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Propose renaming Category:Divisions to Category:Military divisions
Nominator's rationale: Rename. Current name is ambiguous. Based on the parent category the category is intended for military units. Vegaswikian (talk) 00:36, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is remarkably similar to the debate vis-a-vis Category:Groups. Cgingold (talk) 09:05, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support renaming, though the issue should probably be dealt with in a consistent basis with Groups, both of which have potential ambiguities, though any rename will be clearer than the current title. Alansohn (talk) 17:35, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I found the main article at Division (military), and would prefer a rename to Category:Divisions (military units) or at least Category:Divisions (military). The parentheticals, while ugly, make it clear that the term is being used in a particular context. -choster (talk) 03:39, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support rename preferenably as choster. WE recently discussed Air Force Groups, which raised similar issues. Peterkingiron (talk) 23:59, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • I am not opposed to either of these. Given the lack on consensus on a target, but the total consensus for a rename, I would not have a problem with the closer simply selecting any of the above choices. If someone is not happy, an additional discussion could take place, but I sense that for now there would not be an objection to any other name. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:45, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
