Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tarot island
- The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposed deletion of the article below. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the article's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this page.
The result was no consensus. I suggest a further discussion about the name and spelling of this article, and the possibility, is had elsewhere first. Renominate if deletion becomes a reasonable alternative. ItsZippy (talk • contributions) 19:27, 8 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

An article already exists on the correctly spelled Tarout Island. This new and completely unreferenced article should therefore be deleted, or merged into it (whatever of it is coherent and verifiable and salvageable). Softlavender (talk) 08:18, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment: do we know that "Tarout" is the appropriate spelling here, however? The island is even called "Tarut" by the Saudi Tourism website.-Well-restedTalk 08:27, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Hi Well-rested, I'm honestly not the expert; I assume it's a matter of transliteration choice, and in any case alternate transliterations can be linked via redirects so that all spellings are linked. It seems evident however that the "u" sound is preferred over "o" as in "Tarot", no? Google Maps, and the citation in the article, say "Tarout". In any case, the issue at hand is that the new article needs to be deleted or merged. Softlavender (talk) 08:38, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment: To give credit where credit is due, User:Myrtlegroggins discovered this duplication and brought it to light at the Teahouse, in this thread: "Tarot Island?". Softlavender (talk) 08:32, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment: Another issue is that the title of the original article may more appropriately be without the word "Island" because the place name exists independent of that word in most or many venues. However this is an ancillary issue, but I bring it up because someone moved the article from its original title Tarout so it cannot now be re-moved there without administrative deleting of that redirect page. - Comment: To confirm that both articles refer to the same place, they both give coordinates of 26N50E. Softlavender (talk) 08:58, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment: Another major problem with the Tarot island article is that it is mostly gibberish, apparently created by using something like GoogleTranslate on an Arabic-language source (the creator of the article is Arabic). In fact, the bulk of it seems to be a GoogleTranslate version of the Arabic Wikipedia article: [1]. I say this lest someone think there is much of anything in the article that can be salvaged for merging. Softlavender (talk) 09:30, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment:I started a copy edit but apart from lacking sense; confusion about the name of the island itself and another pre-existing page about the same topic, I suspect the content has been copied from this websiteMyrtlegroggins (talk) 22:41, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- It's a GoogleTranslate version of the Arabic Wikipedia article: [2]. No point in attempting a copyedit because it's so incomprehensible that there's no possible way of accurately knowing what the original said or meant, and no possible way to source any of it. - Comment can we just Redirect it to Tarout Island and call it day?--Lenticel (talk) 03:05, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I wouldn't personally advise that because it implies the spelling is correct, which it isn't. Softlavender (talk) 04:15, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- This is indeed problematic if we don't know it's right name, I'll post the issue at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Saudi Arabia, perhaps they could tell us what's the best local name for this island.--Lenticel (talk) 00:41, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Redirect I favor changing the article to a redirect, preserving the revision history.
The new article largely contradicts the older article, so, at this point, there is nothing to merge. However, if references are found, interested parties can go back and cut passages from the revision history for Tarut Island, and paste it into the correct article, with the new WP:RS.
Discussion of the best transliteration, best name can take place on the talk page. I suggest using whatever wording is used in official Saudi government documents. Geo Swan (talk) 21:47, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
