The hat note says, "Not to be confused with Italian Swiss Colony (wine)", but as you might guess, that's exactly what it should be "confused" with, and this plaque put up by the E Clampus Vitus folks, explains everything: "'Italian Swiss Agricultural Colony' next bought the winery holdings in 1896 and imported workmen and vintners from Italy to improve the growing and processing of grapes into wine." Only the oldest topo I found calls the place "Italian-Swiss Colony", and even on that map it is obviously not a town; by that point it already had its own spur and consisted only of several largish buildings with sidings running amidst them. All later topos label the expanding industrial site a "winery", until finally GNIS gets in on the act and the area reverts to the old name. In fact, the only thing at this point on any aerial is the Mission Bell Winery, owned by Constellation Brands and still served by rail. Perhaps the winery is notable in its own right, but this article calling it a settlement is utterly inaccurate in all but location, including the name. • Delete It took me a minute to figure out what you are talking about. There are references on the internet to an Italian Swiss Colony in Madera. But it appears they are referring to a winery in Madera owned by the company, not a place. Lagringa (talk) 05:04, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that took we some time to sort out, and I'm sorry if I was confusing above. The main premises of the Italian Swiss Colony were at a different location, but they also owned this winery for a while before selling it off again. Mangoe (talk) 05:35, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
