I've held off dealing with this one for a long time due to searching issues and the lack of help provided by such sources as I could find, which consist entirely of topos and aerials. They all show a vague scattering of buildings, seemingly suburban houses in more recent aerials, and that is everything I can find out. Searching is a huge pain, of course, not helped at all by another far more prominent town in a different county and a similarly named place in the same county— and by the innumerable other places in the country named "Independence". That said, I found one reference that might have been a mine that might have been at this location; other than that, the topos are, ultimately, the only source. Gudde discusses the name in general but doesn't talk of any specific Independence in the state. If someone can do better, I would happily yield to their findings, but as it stands, there just is nothing beyond the most basic gazetteer info, which we have held is not enough for notability. Merge or Delete Merge with Rail Road Flat, California or delete. Independence, Calaveras County had no post office. Searching newspapers.com for "Independence Calaveras" yields: a DFG meeting held there, a scholarship winner, an obit, another obit. Independence is quite close to Rail Road Flat, though both have separate names on the topo map. Note that there is also Independence Flat, California, which has no GNIS entry. Do not be confused by U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: Independence Hall, which is about an hour away from the locale under consideration. This locale is not legally recognized (The DFG meeting there and being on a topo map are not sufficient), so it does not meet #1 WP:GEOLAND. The coverage is fairly trivial, so it does not really meet #2 of WP:GEOLAND. Cxbrx (talk) 15:48, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
