Suspected sockpuppets

[edit]

These editors seem to be creating articles of questionable notability on topics mainly related to Azamgarh district. Typically, one of them would create the article and then another one would immediately mark it as reviewed in the page curation log. I see this pattern on Diwakar Tiwari (page creation log), Shikshanirman (page creation log), Adya Prasad Chaturvedi (page creation log), Vagmi Niketan (page creation log) and Tapsi Baba (page creation log). These users have also given one another barnstars. [1] [2], [3].

I'm requesting a CheckUser investigation as it's likely that there are other socks and they will be difficult to detect by behavioural evidence alone given how active the main user has been in WP:NPP ([4]). Uanfala (talk) 01:09, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets

[edit]

I first noticed suspicious activity when an IP (2409:4063:4C9E:1926:7B7B:CD79:91A3:8BA7) posted a list of colleges/universities on the talk page of user Advait.kansal requesting nomination for deletion. Advait.kansal then nominated many of these articles for deletion without any discussion with the IP. I did think why would anyone accept such requests from a random IP? Perhaps this is meatpuppetry?

Since, delving a bit further I noticed that the same IP user posted this list of articles to Worldbruce's talk, who suspected the IP was now blocked user Orbit Wharf (a sock of Cambria Math). An interaction timeline between A.k and OW suggests a possible link [5].

Advait.kansal has made some requests for advanced permissions in recent days at NPP and pending changes. The reason I suspect Truesherpa, is they have very few edits yet have somehow randomly commented on A.k's pending changes request with knowledge of sockpuppetry - which is not something I would expect for a new inexperienced user. Please move if I'm not meant to post here, but in reply: the only reason I suspected a possible link is that another user (linked above) suspected the IP was OW. Since the name came up I thought it "might" be relevant. When checking the interaction timeline A.k and OW have commented on the same AfDs in the past. I'm not sure but it just seems like there 'might' be a link? It was strange that out of the blue an IP posted on my talk page a list of Indian technical colleges to delete. I noticed that they posted the same list at User talk:Advait.kansal. The only connection between us was that Advait.kansal had followed me in !voting merge in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Japanese School Dhaka, a deletion nomination by Orbit Wharf (then called Tajwar.thesuperman). [In my experience he was mainly interested in: Bangladeshi schools/colleges, first creating an article about his own, then about others, and after they were all deleted as non-notable, nominating others for deletion left and right; and creating articles about Bangladeshi/Indian web/TV series and films. I wasn't aware of his cricket-related interactions.]

Orbit Wharf had asked for support on my talk page before, had a similar degree of English proficiency, and had a recent history of nominating poorly sourced educational institutions for deletions, so I suspected the IP was him, possibly concealing his identity because I'd earlier taken him to task for his poor deletion nominations. The only thing that didn't fit neatly was that Orbit Wharf had always claimed convincingly to be from Dhaka, Bangladesh whereas the IP geolocated to Calcutta, India. When I asked Orbit Wharf if it was him, he didn't deny it, just asked for more information about why I suspected him, so I'm still not sure.

The bottom line is that I doubt Orbit Wharf and Advait.kansal are the same person. Orbit Wharf may have recruited Advait.kansal to make deletion nominations, and he !voted delete in one of the resulting nominations, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sunder Deep Group of Institutions (2nd nomination), but their coordination was on-wiki, so more like canvassing than meatpuppetry or sockpuppetry. --Worldbruce (talk) 15:38, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly an old sock account (dating to first SPI) activated recently after other accounts blocked. Suspicious diffs. [6] and Afds[7] [8] [9] Venkat TL (talk) 18:19, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@GeneralNotability, All these socks have a history with this school (e.g. [10] [11]) but now it is semi protected so new accounts cannot be used. They also vote on AfDs with new accounts. [12] [13] [14] [15]. There are only a few edits so far by this sock, so that is all I can see as of now. Hope it suffices. May be admins who looked before can find more about them. @Girth Summit, @Dreamy Jazz Venkat TL (talk) 17:37, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Venkat TL,  Additional information needed. In order to facilitate and expedite your request, please provide diffs to support your case. Please give two or more diffs meeting the following format:
  1. At least one diff is from the sockmaster (or an account already blocked as a confirmed sockpuppet of the sockmaster), showing the behaviour characteristic of the sockmaster.
  2. At least one diff per suspected sockpuppet, showing the suspected sockpuppet emulating the behaviour of the sockmaster given in the first diff.
  3. In situations where it is not immediately obvious from the diffs what the characteristic behaviour is, a short explanation must be provided. Around one sentence is enough for this.. You have given us a list of "suspicious edits," but have not explained how they indicate that Tnawang is related to Vinodtiwari. You also need to indicate why you believe checkuser is necessary.
