Suspected sockpuppets

[edit]

All 3 user accounts intersect with disruptive edits from this IP range, but without technical evidence I'm having trouble telling which accounts may be sockpuppets or sockpuppeteers. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard#Lenwood S. Sharpe (permalink) for history. Tripodero is the oldest account and the subject of the now-deleted Lenwood S. Sharpe article created by Gumberoo. Thrilllander is now disclosed as an alternate account of Tripodero.

The IP edits from 2600:1702:2E30:C410::/64 started in 2018, particularly on North American folklore. Since the Lenwood S. Sharpe and Lumberwoods articles were created in early 2021, these IPs have edited both. An earlier edit was made to Bumpass, Virginia, and according to a later edit from this range, Bumpass, Virginia is Lenwood S. Sharpe's hometown. Edits have been made to other articles adding links to the Lumberwoods article ([1][2][3][4][5]), the Lenwood S. Sharpe article ([6]), or related external sites ([7][8]). Starting 1 hour after Thrilllander uploaded File:Lamp the Movie (That Really Shouldn't Exist); *A Dracula Film.webm to Wikimedia Commons, the primary contributions from this range have been inserting it into Self-referential humor [9], Experimental film [10][11], List of vampire films [12], List of films in the public domain in the United States [13], and Z movie [14], which then usually get removed by other editors [15][16][17].

Outside of article space, all of the edits from this IP range link to Tripodero. There was a pair of edits in Tripodero's userspace, which a few minutes later was followed by edits by Tripodero. The other was a Wikimedia Commons edit to the file from Thrilllander, which was similarly preceded by edits by Thrilllander an hour earlier.

There's substantial behavioral evidence that Gumberoo is linked to the IP socks, as well as to Tripodero. Both accounts have fearsome critters as their usernames. Gumberoo's first edit is to an article largely written by Tripodero, and Gumberoo was the creator and primary contributor to the Lenwood S. Sharpe and Lumberwoods articles about Tripodero. Gumberoo's editing of the second one overlaps with the IP edits on April 18, 2021 [18][19]. Like the IP editor(s), Gumberoo adds the same file to Z movie [20] and B movie [21]. In particular, the anonymous edit to Z movie was made after Gumberoo had already added it and been reverted.

Requesting CheckUser to confirm which accounts are and aren't sockpuppets, as well as any accounts that have been in violation of WP:IPSOCK. hinnk (talk) 21:48, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If confirmed to each other, WP:SID usage for Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lumberwoods Here and here. FrederalBacon (talk) 21:59, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there, I'm the user in question. So I've already elaborated on this quite a bit in both Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard#Lenwood S. Sharpe and Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Lenwood_S._Sharpe. I think I've provided as much information as I can, but if not, and further clarification is needed, again, anyone is free to just ask: User_talk:Tripodero. After all, such is the very reason why we have talk pages on Wikipedia.
I mean no disrespect to the author of the original post, and I believe hinnk means well, but I've always been willing to provide clarification. Hinnk simply hasn't reached out to me with any specific questions. I did notice the use of passive voice in "Thrilllander is now disclosed as an alternate account of Tripodero," however, I was the one who disclosed this and willing. I have since annotated this on my user page at the suggestion of another user. The reason why I have two accounts was a simple formality that I've already accounted for. And beforehand, I didn't really consider the two user names a secret at any rate.
Moreover, I've already noted elsewhere that I share my work on Wikipedia with others for feedback. As well, I acknowledged that it is entirely possible that the user Gumberoo and the IP may be the same person and someone I communicate with. I just don't know offhand, as I do not typically go around questioning people on their Wikipedia handles. Accordingly, despite the context of this post, I'm not even refuting the possibility of some kind of a link.
Similarly, I've offered to let anyone I communicate know not to make edits concerning myself or my work on Wikipedia.
Overall, I think good communication is key. As always, if you have questions I am here and happy to answer them. I'll do what I can to help out. I wish everyone the best, take care and happy editing. Tripodero (talk) 02:49, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So your assertion is that an IP that made an edit to a subpage of your userspace, within 4 minutes of you then editing the page yourself, and also inserted a video you created into a bunch of articles, is completely unrelated to you? FrederalBacon (talk) 04:37, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for any confusion, but no. To clarify my post indicated the opposite suggesting there may be a very possible relation and even went as far as to speculate it may be a colleague of some sort. Tripodero (talk) 13:38, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Clerk endorsed with respect to Gumberoo vs. the two disclosed accounts. Between usernames and timing, this seems plausible. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 05:12, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Tamzin - I've done a quick check; Tripodero is  Confirmed to Gumberoo. I don't buy them just being an unknown work colleague, the technical evidence could not be clearer. No comment on the IPs, obviously. I don't have time right now to dig into the behaviour, so haven't applied any blocks yet - do you have bandwidth to handle that? Cheers Girth Summit (blether) 06:03, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks, Girth. I take a dim view of outright lies about use of other accounts, and a dimmer view still when that lie is part of an attempt to cover up COI editing. Tripodero and Gumberoo  Blocked and tagged indef. Thrillander blocked separately because I, perhaps pedantically, like drawing a distinction between sockblocks and blocks of legit alts of accounts that were socking. The filer lays out a good case on the /64, and it geolocates near Tripodero's known location. It's a very static /64, consistently used by Tripodero since 2018. Let's start off with a 1-year hardblock. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 06:18, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets

[edit]

Registered 12 days after Thrilllander's images were deleted from Wikimedia Commons ([22][23]), editing the same unique combination of topics (fearsome critters and movies), with the same habit of inserting media or websites from Thrill Land using an edit message suggesting it's actually a minor copyedit (compare [24][25] to [26][27][28][29]). No WP:CHECK requested since the edits are more than 90 days old. hinnk (talk) 22:02, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
