Suspected sockpuppets

PowerofP has "created" two London bus route articles, one a few days ago, one last month. These are actually recreations of articles previously redirected due to lack of notability: London bus route 21 recreates London Buses route 21 that had been restored from a redirect by Ibsiadkgneoeb in June 2014 and again by Asbeto4 in September 2014; and London bus route 295 recreates London Buses route 295 that had been restored from a redirect by Ibsiadkgneoeb in June 2014, by SeatF22 in July 2014, and again by Asbeto4 in September 2014—in this case, it reuses the "London Buses route 295" bolded wording in the article's lede. Note that the sockmaster has been blocked for about a year (there's a Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of Ibsiadkgneoeb), and SeatF22, Delboy18, and Asbeto4 were blocked over the ensuing few months; PowerofP is the new account that I believe is following in the footsteps of these, and trying to evade detection by slightly altering the article titles from the standard "London Buses route X" nomenclature used by the notable routes. I don't know whether a CheckUser request is useful where the prior activity was in the previous year, but in case it is, I thought I should request it. Thanks for your attention. 01 July 2015[edit]
Suspected sockpuppets

The standard common element of the first three accounts is served by, mainly railway station articles in western australia, all three accounts are not edited at the same time, the terminology and editing style used is common to all three accounts, the edit summaries are identical, and more than one of these accounts has edited the same article Toodyay railway station [1] and [2]

Mo7838 had been in long go nowhere arguments with west australian editors over railway articles, It could be assumed the editor is trying to avoid identification with the earlier account that arguments were held from. If the editor had 'lost' something to do with earlier accounts, there is no open explanation of, or identification of previously.... x editor at the new accounts... The fourth account is similar except that most of the articles are about South Australian instead of Western Australian topics, and the fifth account is also similar save that the topics are mostly in Queensland or Victoria.

Disruptive editing style similarities across all accounts include deletion of references created using templates and harv references and replacement of them with individual citations (usually ref name= type); also citing unreliable online sources and printed sources without specifying individual page numbers.

The editor's editing style has generated a number of complaints from other editors about disruptive editing (see, eg, User:Coomera81 and User talk:Coomera81#Welcome and an explanation about templates) but it seems that the editor simply ignores those complaints. Bahnfrend (talk) 14:06, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • User Coomera81 was created[3] after Mo7838 had been cautioned about disruptive behaviour on topics related to Western Australian Railways, Mo7838 ceased all activity on that area, Coomera was asked if they would put some information on about themselves on their user page, next day Total25 was created[4]. In June Mo7838 and Total25 were linked in a SPI when user copied totals signature and appeared to be voting as Total25, this closed after the editor was given benefit of the doubt over their actions and courtesy deleted. User:Coorwrold account started[5] after that discussion was closed all of these accounts use the exact style of editing, edit summaries similar sources and appear to work in geographic topic isolation but on the same topic area using the same source. The only account that doesnt fit the lineal pattern of question - creation of a new account is User:BarossV[6] which was created 10 days after Total25, though it fits all other patterns and Mo7838 had been asked to participate in a mayor restructure railway articles[7] something he was aware would attract attention from users he had previously interacted with. •  Clerk note: @JarrahTree and Bahnfrend: In order to facilitate and expedite your request, please provide diffs to support your case. Please give two or more diffs meeting the following format:
  1. At least one diff is from the sockmaster (or an account already blocked as a confirmed sockpuppet of the sockmaster), showing the behaviour characteristic of the sockmaster.
  2. At least one diff per suspected sockpuppet, showing the suspected sockpuppet emulating the behaviour of the sockmaster given in the first diff.
  3. In situations where it is not immediately obvious from the diffs what the characteristic behaviour is, a short explanation must be provided. Around one sentence is enough for this. Vanjagenije (talk) 21:22, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Vanjagenije: fair enough, you have your procedures - the general pattern of editing summaries, and requirements are being adhered to strictly, are not so much something that a diff can actually provide, the trends go over a number ranges of edits. Being short of time here and in real life, extracting diffs will be delayed.JarrahTree 23:46, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • I will be delayed as well, probably at least until the weekend, for the same reason. Bahnfrend (talk) 02:11, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Clerk note: Seven days have passed, and I still see no evidence in the form I requested. Vanjagenije (talk) 09:25, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Most obviously, these diffs demonstrate a consistent style of citation of online sources - url and short name in square brackets, followed by a short unlinked name of the publisher - citation templates are not used for online references and dates are (commonly) not given. Also, Mo7838 (4) and (5), and BarossaV (1), are so similar in style, subject matter and referencing that the three articles in question were very obviously created by the same person. Bahnfrend (talk) 14:02, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • All the blocking and tagging is done. I'm putting the case on hold, like the other SPI, until I decide how best to do the merger. That won't be until tomorrow (probably).--Bbb23 (talk) 04:35, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge is done. Closing.--Bbb23 (talk) 22:58, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets

Similar type of name as names of other socks of this user. Similar focus on railway oriented topics in the UK and Australia. Similar complaints from other editors about disruptive editing (see User talk:Mvpo666). Similar method of citation of online sources, eg this diff with bare url plus brief description - no cite template used - and this diff - similar citation format and it's a citation of a railway timetable - again, a classic example of a citation of this sockpuppeteer. Bahnfrend (talk) 16:19, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Interestingly this user if it is the same, seems to be oblivious to the sock and blocking issue, and keeps returning to the same articles over and over again, Toodyay_railway_station has been visited by at least 3 of the same users accounts. JarrahTree 00:49, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Comments by other users[edit]

Reemembering that when the original checkuser request went up to do with Mo7838, it was though that user was the sockmaster, it was not known there was another id behind that, it is unknown which exactly the current ID editor name is potentially the base sockmaster at this point, most Australian editors deing with this issue though that Mo7838 was the master editor id sockmaster, and had not encountered D447817 in any way at all JarrahTree 04:21, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It's probably sufficient to note WP:DUCK and the following: the latest suspect's User contributions page shows that the suspect has started at Northam railway station and then moved east along the Eastern Goldfields Railway disruptively (see criticisms by other editors here) adding passenger train timetable information to each passenger station on that line, except Merredin railway station, where the entry says "Updated services", because the confirmed sock Total25 had already added such information, using the puppeteer's standard type of referencing of online sources, as described above and as used by this suspect as well (see this diff for both the confirmed and suspected socks' amendments to that article). 23 September 2015[edit]

Suspected sockpuppets

The suspected sock has a name similar in style to many of the various other socks of this user, ie a word or part word followed by some digits. At the time this investigation was launched, the suspected sock had made four edits, all of articles about Western Australian railway topics, a subject of interest to some of the other socks of this user, and especially User:Mo7838. There are also similarities between the edits. Eg, this diff in CBH class is a Mo7838 edit, and adds content including "In April 2011, CBH Group placed an order with MotivePower for 22 locomotives", and this diff in Westrail P class (which has previously been edited by Mo7838) is by the suspected sock and adds content beginning with "In 1988, Westrail placed an order for 15 CM25-8 Dash 8 locomotives ...". Bahnfrend (talk) 10:14, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A further comment: A previous investigation into whether Mvpo666 (talk · contribs · count) is a sock of this user concluded that the checkuser showed that Mvpo666 was unrelated and the behavioral evidence was not sufficient to justify a block. It may be that a checkuser of this suspected sock will show that this suspected sock is related to Mvpo666, in which case I would say that both Mvpo666 and Merid222 (note the similarity of their names) are suspected socks of the same user. • Despite the checkuser result, this looks like an D47817 sockpuppet - similarities in edit summaries, content and references - and the username appears to be based on British Rail Class 222, whereas the edits are to Australian articles. Peter James (talk) 22:03, 29 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Usual hallmarks of this sock. Alphanumeric name. No user page. No entries by user on talk page. Obviously experienced editor, even though it's a new username. Edits only articles about railway topics. Usual short form method of citing online sources - bare url plus brief description - no cite template used. (See, eg, this diff, this diff and this diff, which also includes another hallmark of this sock - citation of unreliable online sources (in this case, Vicsig.net).)

Suspected sockpuppets

Inadvertantly put in archive before here [21] Usual hallmarks of this sock. Alphanumeric name. No user page. No entries by user on talk page. Obviously experienced editor, even though it's a new username. Edits only articles about railway topics.

In the body of the edits is knowledge of source material, and close, but no cigar, quirks of no local knowledge, but of online sources only. Rapid fire editing;

   13:47 WAGR P and Pr classes‎ (diff | hist) . . (+1,409)‎ . . Cenfin8 (talk | contribs) (copyedit) [rollback]
   13:47 MRWA P class‎ (diff | hist) . . (+792)‎ . . Cenfin8 (talk | contribs) (copyedit) [rollback]

   13:47 WAGR N class‎ (diff | hist) . . (+3,148)‎ . . Cenfin8 (talk | contribs) (copyedit) [rollback]

This example from today 15th December 2015, 4 edits a minute, the telltale edit summary of all previous socks, and actual changing and removal of material very similar to the attitude of the sock of old Mo7578 - removing in most cases material that is referenced and of interest.

In most cases all edits require cleaning up due to a range of minor details. What is concerning, is that most of the added material is valid - but the similarity in style to earlier socks suggests, despite the material not being damaging, the idea that the earlier sock master has returned in rapid fire editing, with all the trade mark edit style of Mo and Total and coor, is problematic JarrahTree 01:48, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

not a hesitation from the previous identified socks, the same edit summary, the same style, valid interesting articles, but by a banned sock.

The tell tale editing on the vast number of articles with the cursed copyedit signature style, is repeated removal of valid content by the editor from the articles, suggesting the behavoural removal of material in the Mo7578 stage as argued strenuously to other users, has permeated this editors thinking, and a classic OCD behaviour of convergent lack of perspective of the problematic behaviour or its ramifications, which is probably the ignoring blocks as an inhibition, but more of a challenge to beat the system.

The new articles created have been put up for speedy deletion, they can be resurrected by a valid editor some other time. JarrahTree 08:57, 19 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Vanjagenije and Mike V: - Thank you both for your comments below, it really looks like this is a very frustrating aspect of the whole process of an issue like this one, where I havent added enough diffs, and the socks are still apparently coming.. There are a few other mosquito bite level suspect socks floating around with the tell tale behaviour - quick, short runs of edits on rail topics, clearly not new users - a couple of good recent examples - [23][24][25] are a good examples of where it is the style, but the edits are so slight - a box or a format addition, a few little other bits, and then gone, that is the main attribute - quick addition and no further editing; no talk or user page additions, short sets of edits, usually australian rail, and obvious clear knowledge of editing to be able to do such edit. My sincerest apologies to both of you that I dont have other devices/systems to track or alert that are adequate for the cases to be adequately checked - JarrahTree 08:40, 9 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This address was used (probably by someone else) a couple of times in 2011, and now seems be being used by the puppeteer. The address now edits only articles about trolleybuses in the UK - so similar pattern to, eg, User:Asbeto4 and User:SeatF22 (in each case, edited only articles about London bus routes). The most obvious other evidence is the use of the puppeteer's usual idiosyncratic method of citing references, ie "[(url) brief description] publisher". See, eg, this diff (213.123.210.158) below line 110 and this diff (SeatF22) below line 26. For other examples of this type of referencing, see also this diff, this diff and this diff, which also includes another hallmark of this puppeteer - citation of unreliable online sources (in this case, Vicsig.net). -- Bahnfrend (talk) 06:40, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Although not immediately obvious, the user appears to know a lot about what to do when it comes to using the templates on Wiki, whether electronic or manual (which I hardly believe, given the time between edits). Nordic Nightfury 11:32, 19 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This sockmaster takes advantage of delay in the CU and other actions, all takes is an over-worked clerk or cu person and more damage is done. The slightest similarity between this sock and previous, in the case of this particular sock, should be acted upon asap, as the damage done by this individual sock is extensive JarrahTree 23:26, 25 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Especially given that later socks have also gone with the same pattern, to an even larger extent (e.g. [26]), I find that the accounts are connected by clear and convincing evidence. •  Additional information needed - @Nordic Nightfury: this IP seems to have an interest in removing the center alignment from certain tables in certain railway articles. Can you show diffs showing any of the confirmed sockpuppets doing the same? Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 16:19, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@DatGuy: I know, that's why I asked the filer to do it, they're apparently more familiar with the case and should have done it in the first place. But let us know if you find anything. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 16:29, 14 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Clerk note: I appreciate taking the time to find diffs, but the evidence only shows a topic overlap, while the behaviour does not match. The IP likes to remove alignments from tables, but as far as I've seen none of the multitudes of previous socks have made similar edits. Furthermore the IP has not edited in several days. Same pattern of user name and user behaviour as we have seen many times before. A massive number of large edits done over a very short period of time (less than an hour) on a large group of related transport articles (this time Brisbane bus transport articles). The speed of the edits suggests the revised articles have been pre-prepared and are just being pasted over the existing articles. Has a personal citation style (does not use standard templates) that shows up as previously.

Support this analysis - clearly kept under the radar for a while - but this a sure sign it is the sock - behaviourally up there as an excellent example of previous behaviour and learning to change the name of the edits due to the explaining tell tale signs being discussed here (hi there D47817! learning what not to do in the next batch?) in the past JarrahTree 11:48, 18 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've added CU Request for a sleeper check, purely because of the length of time between reports. Nördic Nightfury 16:12, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Supposedly new user editing at a near-automated level, primarily editing railway topics, as per master. Adding CU request because of master's past.

Tukulun1 - Same editing techniques as previous socks,  Looks like a duck to me. Tukulun is a bit older and may be stale but may act as collateral was an account I tagged as a possible sock back in April but obviously with this new account, if it is D47817 they have signed their own death warrant (again)...... Can a CU compare between both and D47817, and a sleeper check of the master please? Thanking you Nightfury 12:24, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Can we have closure on this please. Nightfury 08:31, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Close with a behavioural block--There's somewhere around a 90-10 chance of being a sock (similarity in edits, as to the rest of the sock-farm and similar nomenclature) but it's difficult to be dead-certain.
Winged Blades of Godric, I don't think that's wise. Mvpo666 has in the past been cleared of socking through this SPI. Attitude is different compared with other socks. Nightfury 13:16, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • The archives are all stale. No other accounts seen. Courcelles (talk) 00:59, 3 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • No, Nightfury, what I'm saying is that CU data is only retained by the server for 90 days, and all the known socks are older than that, so I literally have nothing to compare this account against. I ran the check anyway because I thought a sweep for sleepers could be useful, but found nothing interesting in that department. Someone will have to sort this one out on behaviour alone. Courcelles (talk) 14:51, 3 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm closing this with no action. The request for checkuser on Mvpo666 (talk · contribs) is explicitly no Declined as that account is also stale (see Courcelles' explanation). I understand that we do often action cases where reference is made to repeat of past behaviour (the "duck test") but that depends on very persuasive behavioural evidence, and even if you are invoking the "duck test" you have to give some indication as to what the offending behaviour is. I simply can't investigate this, I have no idea what to look for. Please do feel free to re-file, but if it helps, assume you will need to convince a clerk who has never seen this case before. Considering the WP:SPA nature of this account and the behavioural overlap with other accounts in the sockfarm, I'm convinced that if it's not direct socking, it's WP:UPE meatpuppetry.
