Facepalm[edit]

The result of the discussion was moot - an article has been created in place of the redirect. While this should not prejudge any AFD, I do note that it is not a G4 candidate, because the previous AFD was deleted for lack of sourcing - this is not an issue in the article as presented. –xenotalk 16:05, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The page Facepalm was created as a redirect to Types of gestures. It doesn't appear to have contained other content during its history. There was, at the time the page was created, a single sentence on Types of gestures suggesting that 'Facepalm' is an indication of stupidity, but the page cited no sources to that effect. The sentence has since been removed from the page.

I would recommend either deleting the redirect, or converting it to an article if information on the topic exists. Cnilep (talk) 19:58, 12 December 2009 (UTC) Cnilep (talk) 19:58, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • What is the argument for deletion? –Juliancolton | Talk 20:23, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'd say add facepalm into the gestures list. Not sure what the standard is on that page, but what about mentioning the infamous Picard facepalm? --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 20:25, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • Like other pages on Wikipedia, the standard is WP:Neutral point of view, WP:No original research, and WP:Verifiability. I know of no sources describing the use and meaning of Facepalm as a gesture. If you do, by all means contribute them. Cnilep (talk) 20:49, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
      • Not exactly WP:RS, Urban Dictionary has an entry, as does Wiktionary, and there's even (as empty as it is) http://www.facepalm.org/ ... Then, add to that, a search for the term on YouTube, and there are multiple uses of the term (Picard's being the most popular)... It has also been published (and defined) in multiple books... a quick search on Google finds plenty enough to make an entry... - Adolphus79 (talk) 21:01, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
        • Note that Annoyances is published by Icon Group, which republishes information from various Wikis (though I don't know the provenance of this particular book). Mo' Urban Dictionary is similarly described as "From the wildly popular Web site urbandictionary.com". Neither strikes me as reliable. YMMV. Cnilep (talk) 22:08, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - Let's add facepalm to the list of gestures, then. *facepalm*--Blargh29 (talk) 20:36, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - No rational for deletion... It's a fairly well known gesture, and would be much easier to just add an entry to Types of gestures... - Adolphus79 (talk) 20:48, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Re to both above: facepalm did exist in the List of gestures article until the nominator removed it... –xenotalk 00:58, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Facepalm Facepalm - No reason for deletion as far as I can tell. It's a very well-known gesture... –Juliancolton | Talk 21:10, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: I see no reason for deletion if facepalm is added to the target article using reliable, third-party sources. In lieu of that, it should be deleted as it makes no sense to point to an article that does not contain information related to the title of the redirect. Wordbuilder (talk)
  • Keep I have been bold and added an entry to the article. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 12:18, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks to Phantomsteve for his bold efforts. Unfortunately, he cites sources that discuss *facepalm* as a written internet meme and not a gesture. I think it would be most appropriate to move that information to Facepalm, to preserve the useful information. Cnilep (talk) 15:51, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Comment I have removed the information from the other article, and placed a version on the Talk:Facepalm page. I have family commitments to attend to, so if it's acceptable, could someone else move the content (edited as you desire) onto Facepalm and add a stub tag? I might get on Wikipedia later, but I'm not sure. Thanks -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 15:58, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ελλάδα, Έχεις Ταλέντο[edit]

The result of the discussion was no consensus. Wizardman 01:16, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In the English Wikipedia, no one will be searching for the Greek title... SchuminWeb (Talk) 00:16, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete The article was created with the Greek alphabet title and I renamed it to a more appropriate title. noq (talk) 00:21, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep original language redirect, topic is Greek, the name of the topic is in Greek, the topic is a Greek language program. The current title is a translation and not a romanization of the original Greek title, so it is uncertain whether people will find the article without the original title as a redirect. 76.66.192.35 (talk) 06:19, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per WP:Use English and the unlikelihood of English-Wiki users searching on the Greek title. Cnilep (talk) 20:09, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: Ελλάδα, Έχεις Ταλέντο was apparently viewed 59 times in November, and 25 of those views came on the day the page was created. In comparison, Greece Got Talent was viewed 162 times during the same period. Cnilep (talk) 15:32, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, it's the English Wikipedia for a reason... Tavix |  Talk  01:13, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • But is it the only way to translate this into English? And what about straight anglicization phonetically representing the sounds of the Greek words? 76.66.192.35 (talk) 05:44, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Speedy keep, {{R from alternative language}}. — Kusma talk 09:52, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, for the benefit of those whose English is better than their Greek. Polarpanda (talk) 13:59, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, {{R from alternative language}}, plus redirects are "cheap", and as long as they don't have undesirable side effects (like implicit advertisement) they cause no harm. Favonian (talk) 14:08, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - the key is that this is an original-language redirect. If it was a French-language redirect to Greece Got Talent, deletion would be the correct course of action; as it stands, however, we have a Greek-language redirect to an article about a Greece-related topic. –BLACK FALCON (TALK) 06:58, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
