Jean Bolikango (1909–1982) was a Congolese educator, writer, and conservative politician. He was Deputy Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (then Republic of the Congo), in September 1960 and from February to August 1962. Enjoying substantial popularity among the Bangala people, he headed the Parti de l'Unité Nationale and worked as a key opposition member in Parliament in the early 1960s. Beginning his career in the Belgian Congo as a teacher in Catholic schools, he wrote a novel and worked as a journalist before turning to politics in the late 1950s. Though he held a top communications post in the colonial administration, he became a leader in the push for independence. After the Republic of the Congo became independent in 1960, he promoted both a united Congo and strong ties with Belgium. The President of the Congo posthumously awarded Bolikango a medal in 2005 for his long career in public service. (Full article...)

1551 – Sue Takafusa, a military leader for the Ōuchi clan in western Japan, led a coup against daimyō Ōuchi Yoshitaka, leading to the latter's forced suicide.
1882 – The Vulcan Street Plant, the first hydroelectric central station to serve a system of private and commercial customers in North America, went on line in Appleton, Wisconsin, U.S.
1939 – Second World War: General Władysław Sikorski (pictured) became Prime Minister of the Polish government-in-exile.
1965 – Members of the 30 September Movement attempted a coup against the Indonesian government, which was crushed by the military under Suharto, leading to a mass anti-communist purge with more than 500,000 people killed over the following months.
1998 – The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a nonprofit organization that manages the assignment of domain names and IP addresses in the Internet, was incorporated.

Renée Adorée (30 September 1898 – 5 October 1933) was a French actress. Born into a family of circus performers in Lille, France, she performed regularly with her parents as a child. Having made a reputation in France, England, and Australia for her dancing skills, she went to New York City in 1919, where she was cast in musicals including Oh, Uncle, Oh, What a Girl, and Dancer. In 1920, she appeared in her first film, Raoul Walsh's The Strongest, as the lead character. She went on to star in several silent films in the early 1920s, including Reginald Barker's The Eternal Struggle, which established her as a Hollywood star. The biggest role of her career was as Melisande in 1925's melodramatic romance and war epic The Big Parade opposite John Gilbert. It became one of MGM's all-time biggest hits and a film that historians rank as one of the best of the silent era. She continued making films into the 1930s including two with all-talking roles, but developed tuberculosis and died in 1933.
