Virginia state topographic map
{{resolved}}
Hi editors, I'd like to request help with a topograpic map of the U.S. state of Virginia, a featured article on the English article space. Washington state had a beautiful map (right) made for its article back in 2010 by the very talented user @Bourrichon:, and Florida and Texas also have good ones as well. Who can I ask about making ones for other states?-- Patrick, oѺ∞ 16:01, 27 July 2019 (UTC)

- Hi @Pbrks: I take the requested but this will take a bit of time. I made already the maps of Texas and Oklahoma so Virginia should be feasible. I will let you know when I have a first draft--Ikonact (talk) 12:33, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Ikonact: This is not my request. Pinging @Patrickneil:. Pbrks (talk) 15:08, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
@Patrickneil: I made a first draft. Please let me know if this is in line with the expectations. I will add the geographical notations. Thanks --Ikonact (talk) 22:13, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Ikonact: Holy smokes, that looks fantastic! I'm really impressed! If you want some comments, I'll say maybe the color legend could be larger. Virginia has this funny way of doing independent cities, but maybe we could use a larger font size for Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Arlington, Alexandria, and Roanoke, but it's very cool how the SVG knows to hide the smaller towns when less zoomed in. And by geographical notations, you mean the legend you have at the bottom of your also fabulous map of Texas?-- Patrick, oѺ∞ 14:01, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Patrickneil: Happy to hear that the map is ok. By doing the map I learned a lot :) I made some improvements - changed the font of places in function of the population, added river, island and mountain name etc. Please check the map and let me know. As I am not familiar with the geography of Virginia I may made mistakes. If you wish to display the independent cities I can try to think how to do it. Thanks --Ikonact (talk) 21:56, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Ikonact: Very cool. I'm seeing one possible issue, it look like the Great Dismal Swamp, just left of the cities of Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, is black on any PNG resolutions below 685px, but not on larger resolutions. I think this has to do with the elevation, becuase other places, like Maryland's eastern shore are dark gray on those resolutions too. Any idea why this is?-- Patrick, oѺ∞ 23:43, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Patrickneil: Correct, apparently there is a bug with PNG rendering patterns on small resolution. I removed the blue dashed pattern and filled the swamps with colour. This is not conventional but will solve the issue. Let me know if there are other issues. May be we can ask for comments other participants in the Virginia WikiProject? If this version is OK I will close the request. Thanks --Ikonact (talk) 09:33, 16 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Ikonact: Awesome, yes, I've just added the map to the article's geography section, so we're good to close the request. Fantastic job!-- Patrick, oѺ∞ 13:35, 16 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Patrickneil: Thanks, I am closing the request now. (If you need other state's map let me know. I have my script ready ;-)). --Ikonact (talk) 13:49, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

Circle a small town on a map

Map of a town's location in Pennsylvania

- St. Clairsville, Pennsylvania
- Request
- This is one of the smallest towns in Pennsylvania, so the spot marking its location is really small. Could you expand the red circle that surrounds the town, so the circle is easier to see? I'm imagining a large but "hollow" circle, comparable to the one on File:Harrison County Indiana Incorporated and Unincorporated areas New Amsterdam Highlighted.svg. Thank you.
